Anand rejoins Carlsen in Tata Steel lead after 7 rounds

Magnus Carlsen drew an 83 move Berlin Defence against Peter Leko. Carlsen traded into a bishop ending where he was defending. He played the final phase pretty quickly mostly he said because his moves were forced. White had a number of tries and once he exhausted them Leko agreed to a draw. Carlsen thought black's resources were always sufficient. World Champion Viswanathan Anand had a comfortable quick win against Loek van Wely's Scandinavian Defence. According to Anand 11...Nxb3 was too soon and the endgame should probably be winning for him. However Van Wely's position fell apart very quickly much to the surprise of the Indian. Sergey Karjakin survived a completely lost position against Levon Aronian. Aronian took the initiative as black and then Karjakin blundered with 29.Qxe5 and 34.Qd6. One more good move and Karjakin would have resigned but it didn't happen and gradually Aronian lost all his advantage and even had to be careful to draw. Hikaru Nakamura moved to +2 after defeating Wang Hao in a messy game. 20.Kh1 and 28.Ra5 were errors from Wang Hao and the latter allowed Nakamura to finish things quickly. The remaining games were drawn. Ivan Sokolov vs Pentala Harikrishha was a classic isolated d-pawn position which is worth a look for that but Harikrishna quickly found a way to draw. Erwin L'Ami vs Anish Giri was a draw in an English where the pieces were steadily exchanged. Hou Yifan tried to work with a very tiny edge against Fabiano Caruana's Sicilian Kan but a draw was always the likely result. Leading Round 7 standings: Anand-Carlsen 5pts, Nakamura, Karjakin 4.5, Aronian, Harikrishna 4. Round 8 20th Jan 2013 van Wely-Nakamura, Giri-Wang Hao Caruana-L'Ami, Aronian-Hou Yifan, Carlsen-Karjakin, Harikrishna-Leko, Anand-Sokolov. I will be in commentary on ICC with Lars Bo Hansen.
