1) INTRODUCTION

Another interesting week! I am grateful the feedback from
people so far. I am still digesting some of the material.
Indeed tomorrow I may get round to replying to a few of
the E-Mails I have received this week! FIDE events continue
to puzzle, we should know more by Tuesday.

Viswanathan Anand and Gata Kamsky duely capitalised on their
3-0 starts to their matches against Britons Michael Adams
and Nigel Short. (Described as Queenside Castling for the
British players by David Norwood). The Kamsky-Anand match
is currently scheduled for Feb 1995 in London. Raymond
Keene reports that the PCA World Title match looks like being
in Munich later in 1995. The match between the pair is the
second in recent times. Gata Kamsky eliminated Viswanathan
Anand in the FIDE Quarter finals in India. There the Indian
let slip a 2 point lead, it should be another great duel.
Controversy has followed the Kamskys in the five years since
Gata Kamsky and his father defected to the US five years ago.
Strikingly the issues of Rustam Kamsky`s violence and of
talking during play have been at the heart of the worst
instances that have been publicised. They came together here
during game 4, Gata`s only loss of the match.
During play Gata Kamsky was coughing quite a bit, and Nigel
Short asked him directly if he would get a drink of water
rather than continue coughing as it was affecting his
concentration. With normal relations between
the players this would have been alright. However the most
strict interpretation of the rules (certainly FIDE ones) would
be to issue such a request through the arbiter. However as I
imagine it was Short's turn to move, I don't imagine this
could be described as a serious breach of ettiquete and the
complaint was a valid one. Gata Kamsky went on to lose the game.
After the game Short, some English friends, and his second
Robert Huebner were in a restaurant.
"He leant over the table and stuck his face about two inches
away from mine. He was just ready for a physical assault on me.
He shouted at me: `Why did you talk to my son during the game?'
Then he said:`I'll kill you.' It was an extremely ugly situation.
"I told him I didn't want to speak to him and turned my face away.
[Big mistake, he should have provoked him to hit him as the best
way of saving the match, unless you subscribe to the opinion I've
heard that this was a put up job to intimidate Short.]
I didn't know what he would do. He was only stopped when his two
burly seconds dragged him away." [Fedorowicz and Dzindzeprashvili
I believe.]
Short has also said that in this match he has been subject
to a systematic campaign of "bullying, harassment, intimdation
and lies" by the Kamsky camp. "It is the most disgusting
performance I have ever encountered from an opponent in all
my years of playing. I am playing Gata in the semi-finals
and I'm three points to one down. IF I had been three one
up I would probably have been found knifed in a dark alleyway."
"Rustam Kamsky is known in the World of chess for his aggresssion.
It was a distgusting incident. You don't go round threatening to
kill opponents. There are six more games to play against Gata, so
you can say the situation is going to be quite tense. A chess
game looks passive apart from the intense tension. Feelings can
run quite deep but to have someone threaten you with death, that
is something quite different."
Rustam Kamsky was banned from the playing hall for the rest of
the match. According to some reports he was also questioned by
the police.
If you subscribe to the theory that all publicity is good publicity
then this is good for the game. Certainly there were reasonable
sized articles in all of the heavyweight papers in England. When
the Candidates final is played in London later this year, the
papers won't have any shortage of things to write about Kamsky.
As Kamsky is the only player left in both the FIDE and PCA cycles
I may research a profile of him that will appear in the coming weeks.
Freudian psychologists suggest that checkmating your opponent
is somehow subconciously the murdering (or was it castrating)
your father. Perhaps this is the secret of Gata Kamsky`s success?

The second most important event of the week was the Interpolis
Tilburg Tournament. A knockout in format it was won by Valery Salov.
Salov is still very much involved in the FIDE cycle and is the next
man to take on the mighty Gata Kamsky. Below are some additional

The FIDE women`s Candidates finished on Friday 30th September. The first and
second placed players (whether level or not) playoff in January for the right
to play Xie Jun for the World Title. Two notable things, other than the
qualifiers, are that Cramling, who long ago was regarded as one of the best
women players in the World, had a poor start, however she recovered in the
last three rounds scoring 100%. The other is the complete collapse of
Ioseliani who was in second place at the halfway stage.

as planned in Thessaloniki in Greece. The FIDE statement which
I quoted in TWIC2 with its implication that more bids for the
Olympiad were being sought appears to have more relevence to
the politics of the FIDE elections, than to the Olympiad itself.
It is reported that the Greek Government sent a letter to FIDE
that predates this FIDE statement (dated 11/8/94 although not
"officially" received by FIDE until last Wednesday the giste
of which was that the Greek Government was supportive of:
a) The Olympiad in Thessaloniki.
b) The continued presence of the FIDE offices in Greece.
There is a FIDE meeting on the 2nd of October in Graz, Austria.
A final decision about the Olympiad will be announced on October
3rd.
Once again I should make clear that this is my best understanding
of the situation, based on what I have seen. I have no real
special knowledge of FIDE. For instance last week I stated that
FIDE was on the verge of bankrupcy (something I had heard from
a couple of sources) but a letter from someone closer to the
situation than myself says that this is really not on the cards.
Latest. Abundo has left Makropoulos ticket, he has joined the
Kouatly ticket replacing Leong. [One change to any ticket
is allowed, except to that of the Presidential Candidate.]
Makropoulos visited the Greek Prime-Minister yesterday, but
there is still a possibility that the Olympiad will move to
Indonesia or Malasia.
