1) Introduction
---------------

One of the attractions, I imagine, of being a top class chess player is
that you don't have to answer to anyone. You can work when you like, or
take time off. You aren't responsable to anyone, you don't have to be nice
to your boss. However we see in a couple of cases this week the negative
side to this. If you don't cultivate the friendship of those who organise
events, and of your fellow professionals, if you don't cultivate good
social skills, you end up with situations such as are outlined this week.
See Salov and Karpov in the Sicilian Theme Tournament section and Short
in the OLYMPIAD TEAM NEWS section.

This week I have the end of the Sicilian Team tournament. Some results from
the Cap d'Agde tournament which was won by Gelfand. (there also should be
an additional match between Karpov and Gelfand finishing today.) I'd like
to thank Einar Karlsson, Gary Suffield, and Anjo Anjewieden for their
various reports and games on recent events and Wlodek Proskurowski for the
studies column.

Next week's issue will probably be ready on Sunday 13th November rather
than Saturday. Tomorrow sees the start of the Paris Intel Qualification
Tournament for the final PCA INTEL Rapidplay Grand Prix. Nigel Short
will play as he is no longer seeded.

2) Sicilian Theme Tournament held in honour of Polugaevsky.
-----------------------------------------------------------

Buenos Aires ARGENTINA ----------------------

This tournament was organised by Joop van Oosterom to celebrate the
contribution Lev Polugaevsky has made to the Sicilian defence over the
years. Initially Polugaevsky was to play in the event, but he had to have a
serious operation to remove a tumour on the brain recently. The stipulation
was that all games should start with open sicilian defences. (ie No
sidelines for white. Really all variations with 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4)

Salov - a mini-profile.
-----------------------

Valery Salov scored a deserved success, he lead throughout the event. He
did have a scare in the final couple of rounds, he lost his first game of
the event to the unpredictable Ljubojevic in round 13 and thus had to draw
against Anand with the white pieces in order to win the event. Over the
last couple of years Salov has become one of the elite in World chess, a
man capable of beating certainly Karpov and possibly Kasparov in a match
for the World Title. Although perhaps not a full picture can be drawn from
this thematic tournament, the result does confirm the impression given by
his Candidates matches.

Over the years I have heard in several places that he suffers from ill
health, and that he has completed a number of events in his hotel room.
Mention has been made of Angina, which meant to me a heart condition. When
I asked Bernard Cafferty about this he said that this comes from a problem
with the Russian word which transliterates as above, but in fact refers to
a throat/glands condition.

Salov hasn't received as much publicity as many of the top chess players
but he is a unique and interesting character, all be it also a difficult
one too.

Here is a story I wrote in September 1993:

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Salov and Kasparov.

Whatever the speculation as to who is, and who isn't going to play in the
PCA event in Groningen, it's a fair bet that Salov won`t be there. Salov is
the only top player that I know of who agrees with the removal of ratings
from Kasparov and Short. Another sign is reported in this months
BCM.(August) I reported a while ago that Kasparov played in some of the
rounds of the French League. I also showed his game against Salov which
ended in a draw. Well before and after this game he refused to shake hands
with Kasparov (also at Linares he refused aswell). Salov gave his reasons
in an interview with Jaque (a Spanish magazine). Salov has said:

"Kasparov is certainly an exceptional player, but there is nothing good to
say about him as a person. Kasparov told Jaque that Russia had a need for
people like him with political ambitions, and a lust for power. Alas, it is
quite to the contrary... there are now too many people like him with
political ambitions, and lust for power. Kasparov was formed in Azerbaidjan
with the most repugnant form of Socialism."

"Kasparov wrote a note to Khasbulatov [the speaker of the Russian
Parliament] that the Alekhine Memorial in Moscow last November had no
importance. He claimed that 'his great friend' Campomanes would not attend
the tournament (but he did)He told the Debrecen team that they were 'a mass
of no-hopers who wouldn't even make third place.` This comment led to
Khalifman withdrawing from the team. Kasparov destroyed the GMA and the
World cup. What we are going to have now with the PCA is a new GMA, but
with Kasparov the absolute dictator."

Salov also wrote a very strange letter to NIC which Timman took, and it can
be read that way, to be a suggestion that Timman threw his game against
Anand in the Alekhine Memorial mentioned above. All pretty strange.
---------------------------------------------------------------

Another story Salov`s own personal method of winning friends and
influencing people is told by Louis Rentero. Salov has lived in Spain for
a number of years now, at first in Linares where he was invited to work by
Rentero and now I believe in Madrid where his wife has gone to work. When
they left Linares he evidently threw away all the plaques that are
presented to the players at the Linares tournament in the dustbin. This
made Rentero pretty angry and he didn't invite Salov to Linares this year.

It is reported by Ian Rogers in BCM that Salov believes he is finding it
hard to get the very best invitations to events because Kasparov stipulates
that he won't play in tournaments in which Salov is playing. (BCM also
says that Karpov has a similar policy towards Nigel Short.) Salov puts it
this way: "If Kasparov agrees to play in a tournament, I'm out. However my
character is not that of a victim, if this situation persists, I'll take
action = as yet I don't know what I can do."

Almost every public statement contains a new attack on Kasparov as Michael
G. Zehr quotes Salov from issue 21 of Inside Chess

"Without his opening preparation, Kasparov would be satisfied with a place
at the bottom of the World's Top Ten. A great deal of his power is based on
his openings and that is not the result of personal effort by him, but
rather it is the output of a whole team. Karpov, Anand, Kamsky, Kramnik,
Ivanchuk, and Gelfand, just to name a few, are better players in my view,
if we take the word 'player' literally. If they can enter an equal
middlegame against Kasparov, he can't prove that he is the stronger player,
but often they don't have the financial and political power to contract
such a strong team of seconds to help them in their preparations."

He wrote a letter to New in Chess (Issue 3 1994) in which he questioned the
use of money by the PCA. [Like I say, he is not a man who is uncertain of
his own opinion, although some of his letters show a quite nice turn of
phrase and humour too.

RECENT RESULTS
--------------

These results don't seem quite as good as I remember them. If I haven't
left any events out then it shows the paucity of invitations he has
received recently.

Tilburg - Second round eliminated by Yudasin.
CANDIDATES Eighth Finals - Salov-Khalifman 5-1
Madrid 6th=	4.5/9
CANDIDATES Quarter Finals - Salov-Timman 4.5-3.5

Anand - Karpov (12)
-------------------

Karpov carried on his reputation as an annoying person to carry out post
mortems with after his round 12 game with Anand. The normally diplomatic
Anand was annoyed with Karpov's statement: "My ninth move is a new idea and
I refuse to believe it is bad simply because of the result of the game."

Anand said "Karpov is always saying that he has a good position when others
believe that he is lost. As far as I'm concerned I would be prepared to
challenge Karpov to a 24 game match taking the situation after Black's
ninth move as the starting position in every game. I would give him a three
point start and still win the match." [as reported by Raymond Keene in the
Times.]

The point really is not Anand's offer, but that he should be sufficiently
annoyed to make it. A number of people don't analyse with Karpov anymore
because of his behaviour in post-mortems.

3) Cap d'Agde
-------------

This event invited the best players available for a particular
year of birth. In addition French Champion Apicella was invited.

FINAL RESULTS. [5 rounds]
-------------------------

Gelfand 4
Adams, Alterman, Xie Jun 3
Lautier, Lutz 2.5
Topalov, Leko 1.5
Apicella 1

Gelfand won $10,000 and will play a two game match with Karpov. This I
imagine will be a cautious affair as they are due to meet in the FIDE
Candidates semi-finals at the start of next year.

In addition Adams, Alterman and Xie Jun will playoff for prizes of between
$3,000-6,000. (these events have probably already finished, I just have no
news of them.)

Notable is that 10 year old Luke Mcshane didn't score after his win in
rounds 3. I think it isn't right to put such a young player in an event of
this type. I hope it hasn't done too much damage. (he has been also
shamelessly exploited for publicity at the Lloyds Bank events over the last
couple of years, so much so that he should have in fact received the top
appearance fee in my opinion!)

8) OLYMPIAD TEAM NEWS
----------------------

Ashok Waren reports the team from India for the Olympiad:

  GM Dibyendu Barua (Captain)
IM Praveen Thipsay (The current National Champion)
  IM P. Mithrakanth
  IM K. Murugan
  FM T.S. Ravi
  IM Sharad Tilak

FYI: Last year India finished 22nd.

In the UK the planned meeting to reconsider the selection of the England
team that was due to be held this week has been cancelled. Probably the
interview Nigel Short gave to Chess Magazine was the reason. It would, in
my opinion, be impossible for Nigel Short to play in any recognisable
England team after this bad tempered and mean spirited interview. He states
his case in the same way that I reported in TWIC 4 ie that the Moscow
Olympiad is a fundamentally different event to the Thesseloniki Olympiad
and thus that the entire selection process should be undertaken again. If
that were the case he would have a right of veto over the selection of the
non-playing captain, which is Murray Chandler, a man he hasn't been on
speaking terms with for a long time. (its too long to go into, I reported
it and the breakaway from FIDE extremely extensively at the time.)

Some quotes:

Referring to the BCF press release condemning Short for breaking away from
FIDE he says:

"The names of the four players as contacts were given, namely Murray
Chandler, Julian Hodgson, Tony Miles and John Nunn. (The name of
International Director Simon Brown also appears). This group of players
comprises the hard core of those who are fundamentally opposed to me."

He adds a specific observation about Julian Hodgson (he starts by quoting
Hodgson) :

" "Short's behaviour has been unbelievable. To use the FIDE system for three
years and then dump it at the last moment is total hypocrisy." For a man
with such a firm moral stance against the PCA I was surprised to see him
not only commentating at the London INTEL Speed Chess this year, but also
competing himself at the PCA Qualifier in Groningen and seconding Michael
Adams in PCA events in New York and Linares. "Hypocrisy" is certainly the
right word but perhaps he applied it to the wrong person."

He rakes over Olympiad selections from 1986 when he was on board 3 instead
of board one. (Nunn responded to these allegations in a review of Lawson's
book on Nigel Short. Short believes in the strength of his case, and
gives some figures), but he also added the following:

"John Nunn, a man sho is not necessarily as emotionally mature as he is
intelligent, appears to have become quite excitable on this and other
issues and to have put his feelings before his brain."

Leaving aside the truth of his arguements, they certainly have some merit,
he seems totally incapable of seeing the impact of such jibes. Indeed he
himself above all should realise the impact that such ill considered
remarks make. Short seems to expect people to agree with him all the time,
even when his views, such as those on Kasparov change virtually overnight.
Anyone who actually worked for a living would quickly find themselves
unemployed if they continually went to war with collegues over such
slights. He has left himself almost completely isolated after attacking
almost all of his potential Olympiad collegues, particularly as after he
gave this interview he appeared to have a change of heart about Chandler.
We all have day to day frustrations, but most of us leave things lie for a
while as they have a tendency of working themselves out. Ill chosen words
at moments of real anger are not really the way of solving such problems
and tend to be remembered long after any original incident is forgotten.

9) Marshall Double Scheveningen Tournament
-------------------------------------------

FINAL STANDINGS. [5 rounds]
---------------------------
1. Hergott (CAN 2430) 4
2. Herbert (CAN), I Gurevich (US 2570) 3.5
4. Mednis (USA) 3
5. London (US 2400) , Ashley (US 2475), Frias (US)	2.5
9. Renhings (USA) * 1.5
10. Young (USA) 0.5

Held at the Marshall Chess Club.

5 qualify for the next stage. The event was run as a Scheveningen
Tournament, ie the above were split into two teams of 5. The next stage is
similarly a Scheveningen tournament, with 5 seeds playing the 5 qualifiers.
It is a method of maximising norm chances I imagine.

( * hope this is correct my handwriting isn't really clear, also
Hergott-Young seems a very strange game.)

10) STUDIES by Wlodek Proskurowski.
-----------------------------------

This time we sample a contemporary study. Best studies, after
publication and possibly gaining an award, are refereed for the
second time before being accepted to the prestigious FIDE Album.
All this takes time. Relatively recently, the results of the
1986-88 Album were announced. Among studies that received from the
judges the highest scores, 10 or more points out of 12 (and there
were 14 such studies), two were by composers who are on the rgc net
(at least occasionally). Although they have very distinct styles
they share certain similarities: approximately same age, being
strong otb players, publishing under Israeli flag, and most
importantly, belonging to the elite group in study composition
(one should expect them to earn FIDE titles at any moment).
The first one to appear in TWIC is Gady Costeff, a computer
  scientist from San Francisco.

   Solution

The two advanced White pawns are controlled by
the two Black rooks on files b and h. Attempt
to lure Rb1 from the h-file doesn't work:
			1.b8Q+? Rxb8 2.h7 Nf6+ and Rxc8 is controlling
h8 square on a horizontal. Thus,

   1.h7 Rh1+

2.Bh3! making bR vulnerable after capture; immediate
2.Kg4? is met by 2...Rb3, and the other bR
			controls b-file.

        Rxh3+

3.Kg4 Rxh7 only now is promotion on b-file possible

4.b8Q+ Ke6 forcing the next move

   5.Qxe8 Rg7+ immediate capture 5...Rxe7 and 6.Qg6+ wins,
the same motif as in the main variant

6.Kf4 6.Kf3? Rd6 and wK is too far away from the
			battle

	 Rf7+ 6...Rd6 7.Qf8 Rf7+ (7...Rxe7 8.Qf5 mate)
				8.Ke4 wins,
			6...Rc3 7.Qg6+ Rxg6 8.e8Q+ Kf6 9.Qe5+ wins,
			6...Rd7 7.Qg6+ Rxg6 8.e8Q+ wins.

   7.Ke4 Rd7

8.a6! an interesting symmetric position in which
the only unsymmetric element, p.a6, forced
Black into zugzwang. Any of the following six
moves leads to a spectacular win, the first
			four with two active blocks.

It is safe to assume that this position was the point of departure
in constructing the study. Thus, the composer was working backward
from it to produce the initial position, with only three captures
in the process (out of 15 plies). One should admire the
imagination, composing and analytical skills of the composer to be
   able to do so.
