1) Introduction
---------------

My thanks to Gerald Schendel, Laszlo Nagy, Claudio Antonio Tonegutti,
the Chess Planet page, Erich Frosch, Guenther Thallinger, Nigel Johnson,
Martin Dlouhy, Rene van Alfen and Marco R. Martini.

The start of an interesting week. Plenty of games and news from this
week leads up to the start of the Linares Supertournament. There will be
daily coverage of the event on my chess pages. Kasparov, Kramnik,
Ivanchuk, Anand and Topalov go head to head again with some of the best
of the rest. Jeroen Piket takes the place that was reserved for Karpov.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) Hoogovens Tournament Wijk aan Zee
----------------------------------

Salov snatches victory from Piket in the final round
----------------------------------------------------

The Hoogovens Tournament produced some fighting and exciting chess and
ended in a victory for Valery Salov. Salov was quietly effective only
losing to Piket. Piket had the opportunity to put further distance
between himself and the rest of the field earlier in the event, he
missed a win against Granda Zuniga for instance. Instead it came down to
the final round. Valery Salov managed to save a bad position against
Viktor Korchnoi whilst Alex Yermolinsky won a fine game against Jeroen
Piket and Ivan Sokolov drew with Predrag Nikolic.

The B tournament was won by Friso Nijboer and Paul Van der Sterren who
both had fine second half to the events. Van der Sterren won his last
three games. Etienne Bacrot who had a brilliant start in the first six

result, but not the exceptional one that he had within his grasp.

4) Anatoly Karpov in election battle in Tula
------------------------------------------

Anatoly Karpov is in an election battle for the parliamentary seat left
vacant by Alexander Lebed when he joined the Yeltsin Government.
Although Karpov believes that his ratings are improving he is not likely
to win the seat. His opponent is Alexander Korzhanov who rose to public
prominance as Yeltsin's bodyguard. At the start of the 1990's it became
known that he was also a confident of Yeltsin. He eventually had a very
public fall-out with Yeltsin and is now building his own career. He is
aligned with Alexander Lebed who many expect to succeed Yeltson. Lebed
has made strenuous attempts to moderate his image recruiting many well
known figures. Kasparov is said to be one of those who has been drawn
towards Lebed.

6) II Ciudad de Ubeda
-------------------

As a nice taster for the later events in Ubeda and Linares this strong open
took place between January 20th-29th. A ten round event had a first prize
of half a million pts.

The event was won by young Russian talent Filippov ahead of Tony Miles, Andre
Kharlov, Alexander Khalifman and Ildar Ibragimov.

My thanks to Claudio Antonio Tonegutti for the results and games.

7) 13th Geneva Open Switzerland
-----------------------------

There was a five way tie on 6.5 at the end of the 13th Geneva
open in Switzerland. The winner on tie-break was Alexsander
Wojtkiewicz. The event was held between the 18th and 26th
of January 1997.

The story of the event however was that of 21 year old student
from Winterthur had a tough tournament and scored a sensational
GM norm. He beat Boris Gulko in round 3, Miron Sher in round 4,
and Vladimir Tukmakov in round 6 before drawing out the event
against the leaders.

There were many good players who had bad tournaments including the
aforementioned Gulko. The prizes went down only to 25th place so
Miron Sher and Jo Gallagher won nothing.

The 14th open will run between the 24th Jan and the 1st Feb 1998.
