1) Introduction

My thanks to Gerald Schendel, Chess Planet, Eric van der Schilden, Sinisa Joksic, Carl Fredrik Johansson, Marco R. Martini (ITA), Laszlo Nagy, SS Quah, Michael Atkins, Juan S. Morgado & Roberto Alvarez, Zeljko Kartal, Jonathan Tisdall, Ignatius Leong, Teun van der Vorm and all those who helped with this issue.

The key stories this week are varied. Mr. Stroe the man trying to take the Karpov and Kasparov match to France appears to have made great strides towards achieving that aim. Kasparov's published statements seemed to make the match very unlikely but according to Willy Icklicki on the Chess Planet page he is continuing to organise the match and believes that he will have both players on board soon. It seems if the arrangements are acceptable to Kasparov the match will happen. We surely won't have to wait long for the answer.

The 6th Melody Amber is a fun event with many of the best players in attendance. More news next week.

With Kasparov taking on IBM's Deep (or Deeper) Thought at the start of May everyone's attention will turn to computer chess. AEGON (and its American counterpart the Harvard Cup) pit man against machine (or perhaps that should be programmer) to give some indication how the balance of strength is going. A curtain raiser for what is certainly going to be a high profile event.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) 6th Melody Amber Tournament

The 6th Melody Amber Tournament got underway on April 18th 1997. This is a fun event of speed chess and blindfold chess. It is too early in the event but the pre-tournament favourites are Anand and Kramnik. Another regular Vassily Ivanchuk is thankfully playing. His crisis of confidence when playing in Las Palmas and Linares had lead him to talk of an extended break A good result here at a more stress free form of chess might be the tonic he needs.

3) First Saturday Tournaments April.

The April First Saturday Tournaments produced two great performances from 16 year old players. Both Peter Acs in the Grandmaster Tournament and Mas Hafizul in the International Master event started with 8/8. Peter Acs secured his first Grandmaster norm with a draw in the ninth round and then lost and drew in the final two rounds, nevertheless securing an excellent result. Mas was playing in a nine round event and managed to complete a perfect 100% score. Two names to watch for.

Peter Acs

Peter Acs is a 16 year old FIDE master. The result in Budapest was his 3rd IM norm and his 1st GM norm. Born on May 11th 1981 he lives in Paks which is 100km to the south of Budapest. His career is being sponsored by the Atomic Energy Station based in Paks. [Information Laszlo Nagy]

Mas Hafizul

His full name is rather a mouthful - Mas Hafizulhelmi Abdul Rahman - but for his chess-playing career, the Malaysian Chess Federation had registered him with FIDE as simply Mas Hafizul Helmi.

Mas Hafizul is 16 years old and studying at the Hamzah Secondary School in Machang, a town in Kelantan (one of the Malaysian states). As long as five or six years ago, he was identified by Eduard Gufeld as someone with the potential to progress in the game.

Since then, he has played for the country in several international chess events, including the Chess Olympiads. His previous best overseas achievement was a second place in the Abu Dhabi invitational chess tournament in 1995. He was the Malaysian chess champion in 1994 and 1995.

Mas Hafizul's potential and successes have not gone unnoticed. Last year, he was named the national sportsboy by the Malaysian Schools Sports Council, the first time that such recognition had been accorded to a chess player.

First Saturday May 1997

In May there are two First Saturday events.

An IM closed tournament of category II. with a maximum of 14 participants. It will run from 3rd-15th of May.

A Scheveningen system tournament with an unlimited number of participants.

It will run from the 3rd until 11th of May (9 days long)

The players registered in the IM-group:

IM KAHN, Evart (HUN, 2370), IM CZEBE, Attila (HUN, 2325), IM EPERJESI, Laszlo (HUN, 2340), WIM VELCHEVA, Maria (BLG, 2285), KOCH, Wolfgang (GER, 2355), STILLGER, Bernhard (GER, 2315), ABASOV, Farid (AZE, 2220), KARATASIAN, David (ARM, 2235), TOTH, Andras (HUN, 2245), LAUBER, Arnd (2360), LOPUSHNOI, Denis (RUS, 2290), PEREDY, Ferenc (HUN, 2220).

So 12 of the 14 players are already invited and there are places for 2 players. One above 2300 ELO rating if it is possible.

The situation in the SCHEVENINGEN system group:

There are 10 players with an average rating of about 2150 and 7 players without FIDE ELO-rating. There are 3 vacancies for such a players who wish to make the FIDE-ELO rating in 9 days and do not want to play in many open tournaments for that.

4) Mr Stroe's little miracle?

According to Willy Icklicki of Chess Planet Compaigne is well on the way to securing a match between Kasparov and Karpov. In a bonus that surely FIDE could not have anticipated, the match could take place under FIDE's auspices. Indeed it seems to be that the organisers insist that if they do organise the event it must take place under FIDE's banner. The organiser Mr Stroe has sent a fee to FIDE to cover the bidding process and he promises to deliver the signatures of the representatives of Karpov and Kasparov soon. Karpov has said that he believes that the match is on the way. If all this happens it would represent an incredible achievement for Mr Stroe. A month after the organiser Mr Stroe announced his attempt to get Campaigne in France the match Kasparov said he hadn't even heard about the bid. When told about it he could not have been more dismissive. Elsewhere Kasparov has been saying that he believes there isn't much interest in the match, and the value is being lowered by Karpov's form. He has been outspoken about his dislike of the FIDE leadership and his unwillingness to co-operate with them in any way. Reading the runes is desperately hard, the involvement of FIDE (explicitly excluded by the players in an agreement last year) and the casual dismissal of the bid by Kasparov seemed to add up to a big no, and yet the organisation of the match continues apace. Until this week I still thought the chances of a match were slim but to be honest I don't trust my instincts on this story anymore. It is possible that Mr. Stroe's persistence might produce a little miracle.

5) Lebed and Kasparov in London

Gerald Schendel and other send information about Kasparov's recent visit to London in support of Alexander Lebed. In recent weeks Lebed has been backed by many leading figures to become the next President of Russia.

Lebed met Kasparov last year and persuaded him that his ideas were the best way forward for Russia. Kasparov has been an enthusiastic supporter and has contributed towards the economic policies of the loose coalition which is looking towards the next elections.

In London two events were held on April 12/13/14:

- an economic conference organized by the Wall Street Journal (Europe),

- the beginning of the annual meeting of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

Representatives of the Russian Government made a presentation on Saturday but so did Alexander Lebed. Lebed's chief economic adviser was Gary Kasparov. With stories that Kasparov is one of the financial backers of Lebed's new grouping and his appearance as his chief economic adviser the next Russian elections could be key to Kasparov's future in chess. Perhaps the only limit will be the level of Kasparov's own ambition.

6) 52nd Yugoslav Championship - play-off, Belgrade April 17-23, 1997 by Sinisa Joksic

The Yugoslav Championships finished on March 9 with a four-way tie. There were three grandmasters, Petar Popovic (39 - 2545), Branko Damljanovic (36 - 2540), Dragoljub Velimirovic (55 - 2485) and candidate master Ivan Ivanisevic (20 - 2450).

After the first cycle of the playoffs the leader is Velimirovic. He lost to Popovic in from a good position. Popovic missed chance to mate Ivanisevic in four moves in big time scramble. He should have played 30...Rf1+!! (instead 30...Rg3??) 31.Rf1 Rg3+ 32.Kh1 Qxe4+ with mate. Best game was produced by Velimirovic with Ivanisevic in the third round.

The event will remain tight until the end.

7) 12th AEGON tournament

Coverage courtesy of the AEGON www site. A site administered by Eric van der Schilden of TASC contains some games live, full results and later the games complete. http://www.aegon.nl/chess

There is a shadow over this years AEGON tournament. In less than two weeks time Gary Kasparov takes on IBM's Deeper Blue. This is a computer program that takes advantage of state of the art parallel processing. With a lot of prestige at stake IBM are certain to have allowed their team much more computing time to test the program than in the previous matches. It could be that one of the most important milestones will be gone by the time that AEGON takes place next year, the defeat of the Worlds strongest player in a match. We had echoes of this in some of the opening addresses. "Computer Chess. More a science than a sport" was a talk given by Dr. J.W.H.M. Uijterwijk who outlined what he felt were the contributions of chess as a test bed for artificial intelligence. One wondered who he was referring to as "commercial interests" was it programs like Fritz or perhaps the IBM computer over the water? "Why Computer Chess?" by Cock de Gorter continued the theme of scientific excellence and experiment rather than competitiveness. The winners were humans whether players or programmers. An attempt to give computer chess a post Deep Blue agenda perhaps.

The first three rounds were closely contested with the humans winning two rounds and the computers the other and with the overall score being in favour of the humans by a score of 76.5-73.5. Professor Jaap van den Herik predicts a 170-130 victory this year for the computers and a massacre in 1998 followed by a reorganisation of the event in 1999.

Timman and Anand open 12th AEGON Computer Chess Tournament

Chess Grand Masters Jan Timman and Vishwanathan Anand had a tough time during the opening of the 12th AEGON Computer tournament on Wednesday afternoon, April 16, 1997. Playing a clock simultaneous against six of the leading programs neither scored an outstanding success and Jan Timman suffered quite badly (1 win 2 draws 3 losses). The event is being covered by TASC at: http://www.aegon.nl/chess. Richard Lang's Genius program was particularly successful scoring 2/2 in the encounters.

In trying to find ELO ratings for the players I had an error in the games section and table Goran Andersson should have read Gorgen Andersson last week Gorgen is an unrated player.

9) St Petersburg Tournament

St Petersburg hosts its second tournament in as many months. All the players have connections with the city. Korchnoi lived through the siege of Leningrad and was with Boris Spassky the most prominent player in the 1950s. After three rounds the scores are still very close. If any readers have access to the games could they send them to me? More news next week. [Source of results Chess Planet]

12) FERNANDO BRAGA, PROFIT IN HIS LAND

By Juan S. Morgado & Roberto Alvarez

The XXVIII Mar del Plata open was held between march 22 and 30,in the Jockey Club of the city, by swiss system, 9 rounds.

There were 158 players, from Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Uruguay, and Peru, included 4 GM (Ricardi, Spangenberg, Urday, and Zarnicki) and 9 IM.

After the 4th round, there were 3 leaders with the ideal score: Braga, Zarnicki and Ricardi. Braga won an excellent game vs GM Spangenberg, Zarnicki won Giardelli, and Ricardi beat chilean IM Pablo Toloza.

In the 5th round, Braga drew vs IM Soppe, and Zarnicki drew vs Ricardi. Other several players reach first place also: IM Fiorito, brazilian van Riemsdijk and IM Slipak.

In the 6th round the key game Zarnicki vs Braga finished in a draw after a short fight, while van Riemsdijk won with black IM Slipak and IM Fiorito (with white) won GM Ricardi. Ricardi did not accept a draw offer in the last part of the first session, and finally lost an ending. So, van Riemsdijk and Fiorito reach first place with a score of 5,5/6.

In the 7th round neither Fiorito nor van Riemsdijk took risks, drawing quickly. So, Braga catched again the first place, after winning vs young Fernando Peralta.

In the 8th round the decissive game was Fiorito vs Braga. After a strange opening, Braga played very well in a difficult position, winning before the first time control. Zarnicki won brazilian van Riemsdijk, GM Urday won vs GM Ricardi, IM Jorge Szmetan won IM Slipak, and Pereyra Arcija won R. Dos Santos. So, before the 9th round Braga was the only leader with 7 points, ahead Zarnicki, Szmetan, Urday, Tempone and Pereyra Arcija, all with 6,5.

The decisive games were:

*Braga vs Pereyra Arcija: draw in few moves.

*Szmetan vs Zarnicki: excellent game of IM Szmetan, winning a good ending.

*Spangenberg vs van Riemsdijk: Huguito won easily after a mistake of the brazilian player, who lost a pawn without compensation.

*Giardelli 1:0 Kanefsck

*Urday 1/2 Tempone

The arbiter was IA Gustavo Bacino.

Internet Match: Simen Agdestein - Etienne Bacrot 22 April.

For this year's edition of the PC-EXPO, Norway's top grandmaster (GM) Simen Agdestein, will face the youngest grandmaster in history Etienne Bacrot.

The twist on this year's duel is that the French prodigy will be playing in Oslo, while Agdestein will play from Australia.

The match will be covered live on the Internet, at SOL Games:

http://sol.games.no/

the games domain of Scandinavia Online, the match organiser.

Those present at the PC-EXPO can follow the game live on large video screens or watch the 14-year-old Frenchman at the Telenor Internet stand.

The first game will be at 11:00 local time, game two at 14:00. The games will be played with a time limit of one hour per player per game. There will be live commentary by GM Jonathan Tisdall, carried at the SOL games site.

Bacrot already has a crushing match victory over former world champion Vassily Smyslov to his credit, and has even impressed the normally sceptical Garry Kasparov. Kasparov has rated Bacrot as a better player than Kasparov himself at that age.

Since Agdestein is currently a student again, he might be considered the underdog in the exhibition match. However, he tends to find top form for such events, and has a 2-2 result against Karpov in his list of credentials.
