1) Introduction

My thanks to Net64/El Pais, Johan Sigeman, Roberto Alvarez, Pablo Rodriguez, FIDE www site, Skolernes Skakklub, Lost Boys, Birgit Schuster, Oliver Koeller, Martin Bennedik, Hans-Walter Schmitt, Frank Zimmerman, Jurgen Daniel, Duif Calvin Adam Raoof, Luis Santos, Marco R. Martini and all those who helped with this issue.

I hope this issue doesn't show too many signs of haste after only returning on Sunday from Germany. My thanks to Martin Bennedik and his girlfriend for putting up with me for a few days and allowing me to enjoy my visit to Frankfurt. The Summer provides a stready stream of events and the games and results of those form the centre of this issue. Next week another strong GM event starts in Dortmund so the chess roles on.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) Chess Classic Frankfurt West 1997

June 26th - 29th. 1997 saw a four player rapidplay event (15 minutes plus 10 seconds a move) contested by Anand, Karpov, Topalov and Lobron. This was followed by a two day rapidplay open event.

A chance to visit my friend Martin Bennedik and take in a new country and a speed chess event proved too much of a temptation last week. I attended the two day four player event and took in the city of Frankfurt.

The event itself was an interesting one. The quality of chess was much higher than I expected and served as a useful stopping off point for three competitors in next week's Dortmund event. The chess was more interesting than I expected it to be. I enjoy playing speed chess (especially 5 minute) and appreciated the different skills required for the event. A relaxed approach and a quickness in taking a decision are important. Perhaps also an enjoyment of playing without the pressure of losing ELO points or anything much at all allowed the players to relax. The winner Anand didn't seem especially fired up but seemed to enjoy actually playing the games. Eric Lobron produced some combative chess on the second day having thrown off the rust of four months away from chess.

The event provided an entertaining couple of days chess which although suffering from some technical problems at the start was clearly presented with the organisers learning and implimenting lessons throughout the event. They hope to build on the event eventually perhaps to move towards a top class full length event. I found most interesting the possibilities offered by the venue. This was a hotel, a Holiday Inn. It allowed people to watch the games in the lobby or indeed in their own hotel rooms along with the commentary from Helmut Pfleger. This is an interesting idea that could be extended. I tend to be a peripatetic watcher of chess, I like to have a chat, perhaps analyse positions on my own, eat, drink and so on. If the players themselves could be filmed and electronic boards display the players times, previous moves and current position (something that was not present in the press room at the London PCA rapidplay event I attended last year) then a host of possibilities for improving the experience of spectators are possible. If spectators could in a relaxed way follow the games, have a chat with their friends and move around aswell as follow the chess then a pleasant day could easily be spent at these events.

There was a full house on the second day and they were treated to an Anand massacre of Karpov and a Lobron win against Topalov in a speed chess playoff. There was an extremely small number of draws. Anand was in control having already secured his final place after day one. At that stage Karpov and Topalov were on 1.5 and Lobron on one all of whom could join him in the final. Anand's only loss of the event was in the fifth round when he seemed to want to show he could win using only his 10 second allowance per move rather than eating into his 15 minute initial time.

He dominated the final hitting Karpov with a number of little combinations, much as he did in his preliminary section win against Karpov which was one of the highlights of day one. The last game of the final was a draw of less than ten moves of theory which is missing from the games file. Meanwhile Lobron found his stride (which he carried through until all but the last few rounds of the open event on Sunday. He shared a 2-2 draw with Topalov (his last rapidplay game was a brief crushing win which I hope that either he or Topalov will be able to provide the gamescore to for next week. He won the speed playoff. His rather relaxed approach was quite difficult to cope with once he got started.

Before the event it was in my mind was also to chat with people I hadn't met before about the current chess scene and try and clarify my thoughts. Very large in my mind is the wideranging discussion in England about sport. The themes of getting people to play individual sports, sponsorship and promotion are not ones confined to chess but in many ways they are important. Chess faces a dilemma, it is possible to present it in a way that is very slick but this costs money. If the organisers don't expect spectators then the cost is difficult to justify, yet this just encourages the idea that chess is dull to those who do attend. There was nearly a full house in the venue (perhaps 60-100 people) and they seemed to have a good time even with some problems with the electronic boards. Yet clearly you can't expect people who know nothing about the game to enjoy a chess event. Indeed there are exciting sports which believe they have to make their events even more exciting to keep the costomers returning. Chess needs to set itself a realstic target as to who it expects to appeal to and move towards this rather than the general public at large perhaps.

I would like to write at this at a bit more length at some time soon but I did discuss some of the likely events in chess over the next year or so. FIDE it seems will finance their knockout in December and January. It will be without Kasparov for certain and probably Karpov (even given the IOC's appeal to them talked about on Chess Planet). The subject of the Karpov v Kasparov match was avoided by Karpov and seems to me that it is extremely unlikely it will happen. It is very likely Kasparov will invite a number of players (probably 8), on the basis of an average rating over a period of time (this will be presumably the PCA rating) to compete in an eliminator event to provide a competitor for him in a match. It seems to me that FIDE and Kasparov will never come to agreement (nor I think will it be possible to produce a players organisation after the failure of the GMA) the situation will simply play itself out between Kasparov and FIDE until one or both fail to raise sufficient money or committment to command support.

I'm still a person who finds himself a bit disoriented when he travels abroad so I'm greatful to those who made my trip to Frankfurt an interesting an pleasurable one. Frankfurt is a very pleasant city and I had a good time just wandering around on the Saturday with my friends in weather that was very much an improvement over England.

Tournament information also available in German at Jurgen Daniel's www site:

http://www.schach-daniel.com/chess.htm

My thanks to Birgit Schuster and Oliver Koeller (they compiled the bulletin), Martin Bennedik (for inviting me to stay with him), Hans-Walter Schmitt the organiser, Frank Zimmerman (who sent me the final file of games) and to Jurgen Daniel.

Most of the players will pass on to the International Dortmund Chess Days which celebrates its silver jubilee year. Ten of the world´s top players are going to find their champion in a category 19 meeting from July 4th - 13th.

3) Aarhus Denmark Category 14

The Skolernes Skakklub celebrated its 25th anniversary by holding this event. It took place between June 20th to June 29th and included a closed cat. 14 round robin-tournament, and an international open featuring some strong title players. There was live coverage on the internet

http://www.mi.aau.dk/~mygind/festival97.html

In the end all the favourites came through to the top. Khalifman was undefeated with three wins taking him to 6 points. He was safe and sound for most of the tournament, his endgame win against Stefansson was his best achievement. Michael Adams and Eduardas Rozentalis shared second place. Adams only managed this by winning in rounds 6-8 after a very mediocre start. 61 year old Bent Larsen was a disappointment, he had a couple of short draws and didn't win a single game whilst winning 3. Jesper Mygind has sent the results of the international open won by Alexander Volzhin. There will be games from this event in TWIC next week.

4) Tal Shaked wins US Junior Championships

Tal Shaked got off to a slow start in the Interplay 1997 US Junior Invitational Championships probably due to his journey direct from Hungary but in the end ran away with the 9 round all-play-all championships. Some games are available but I will wait until a more finished version is available as a number are incorrect or incomplete. My thanks to Duif Calvin for the final tables and some coverage is available on both her pages and that of the USCF (see http://www.jaderiver.com/chess/usjr97.html )

9) Kasparov Simul for El Pais Digital

The 26th of June saw Gary Kasparov take on a selected group of players over the internet in an event organised by El Pais Digital and Net64. The event took place between 17-00 and 20-00 Spanish time. Kasparov won most of the games but did concede a couple of draws from the 16 games played. Miguel Najdorf attended the event. It was covered on the internet at http://kasparov.elpais.es/simultanea/simultanea.html in Spanish and the results and games are available at:

http://kasparov.elpais.es/games/calendario.html

I have converted the games however many of them seem incomplete or have strange conclusions so they are of little or no value which is a shame.

10) Portuguese Chess Title Match

IM Antonio Fernandes and FM Fernando Ribeiro are playing a match. The moves are available on the internet at a special match www page. Fernandes ran away with the match.
