1) Introduction

My thanks to John Saunders, Luis Santos, Daði Örn Jónsson, Laszlo Nagy, Anjo Anjewierden, the computer centre at the European Junior Championships in Tallinn and all those who helped with this issue.

150 issues of twic. A number I can hardly believe. I couldn't arrange an Olympiad as I did for the 100th issue, indeed it has been a little quiet. Nevertheless there have been some interesting events and we can look forward to another Kasparov and Kramnik game in the next two weeks. The Fontys tournament should be fascinating clash of young and experienced players, I hope to get over there for at least a few days. It should make for great entertainment.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) TWIC 150

The 17th of September 1994 saw the first issue of THE WEEK IN CHESS. Born with the idea of collecting together the news postings I made daily to the rec.games.chess newsgroup my magazine has changed beyond recognition in the three years since. The magazine hopes to deliver the news and games of the week and allow people to follow the fortunes of their favourite players aswell as the chess politics of the day. The internet is a very different place for chess players three years down the line. Almost every event has an internet site and live chess is the norm for many events. The problem three years ago was getting games, the problem now is sometimes there are too many.

Briefly, I hope, the magazine is again mine alone. My next task is to find the best home for the magazine and guarantee its long term future. Improvements in the way I cover stories and the presentation of the magazine will be my priorities. This is the most rewarding thing I have done in my life. The wonderful E-Mail from those who enjoy the magazine is a great spur. Often I don't have time to reply to them all, I received nearly 100 E-Mails this week, and this hasn't been the most exciting week for chess.

FIDE politics, World Championship cycles, big international tournaments, Olympiads they all have been the staple diet of the magazine. We are in changing times with uncertainty over the World Championships but the rivalries amongst the best players as well as the huge number of competitive tournaments held each year ought to give hope for the future. Here's to at least another 3 years and another 150 issues.

I hope I find the right way to continue the magazine and that we can enjoy some wonderful chess together.

Mark Crowther

3) Van Wely and Piket tie in Monaco

The Association Max Euwe promotes a number of events a year. Its Amber speed play events and Veterans vs Ladies are regulars. Also under the guidance of Joop Van Oosterom it tries to help the careers of the best Dutch players by organising matches. Jeroen Piket has played a number of matches, here he was pitched against fellow Dutchman Loek Van Wely. Van Wely could be described as a little unfashionable. Piket is generally regarded as the most naturally talented but increasingly it is Van Wely who has the results. This match seemed to be heading for an easy win for Van Wely. He was two up after 4 games but then a breathtakingly blunt attack from Piket in game 5 and a dominating performance in game 7 allowed Piket to level up the match. Hopefully for the Dutch both players will have got something out of this match.

4) European Club Cup Group 3

John Saunders reports on the European Club Cup Group 3 qualifier held in Slough 19th-21st September on the official Four Nations Chess League pages. Team events don't seem to suit chess players. The European Club Cup in particular has had numerous disputes, some of them very bitter. The final of this event was effected by a dispute in the match between Slough and Graz. Aaron Summerscale was awarded the game on board 6 as the Graz captain allegedly interfered in the game. This is the subject of an appeal which may reverse the result of the match.

5) First Saturday September Tournament

Laszlo Nagy sends news and games from the September First Saturday Tournament.

The event was won by 21 year old Hungarian law student Zoltán Lehmann. Lehmann scored his first IM norm. WIM Mónika Grabics achieved her first WGM-norm.

The October GM event still needs a GM rated between 2350-2500 ELO. The event will take place between October 4th-17th.

Dmitri Belotelov withdrew after the 8th round.

You can contact Laszlo Nagy at the addresses below. There is also a www site where he has published the 14th issue of his Hungarian Chess electronic magazine.

6) Kasparov to play Tilburg

September 26 to October 9th sees the Fontys Chess Tournament in Tilburg. There are three players over 2700 Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik and Alexei Shirov. The event sees the top level debut of American Junior Tal Shaked. The Category 17 event should put pressure on Kramnik and Kasparov to try and score heavily (this is the lowest Category event Kasparov has played in for some time) which should lead to a fascinating struggle.

Garry Kasparov (2820), Peter Leko (2635), Tal Shaked(2500), Judit Polgar (2670), Peter Svidler (2660), Alex Onichuk (2625), Vladimir Kramnik (2770), Joel Lautier (2660), Loek van Wely (2655), Alexei Shirov (2700), Michael Adams (2680) and Jeroen Piket (2630)

The event will be covered on the internet by Lost Boys.http://www.lostcity.nl/chess/fontys/default.html

7) FIDE Knockout in Groningen.

The organisers have a web site for the Groningen leg of the FIDE knockout event and the Hoogeveen events in December and January.

8) 17th Acropolis tournament

The 17th Acropolis tournament is on now and covered at his site http://www.compulink.gr/chess

9) The Closed Icelandic Chess Championship 1997

The Closed Icelandic Chess Championships of 1997 took place in Akureyri 9–20.9 1997. An extremely combative Icelandic Championships was won by Johann Hjartarson with 9.5/11. Ex-Candidate Johann Hjartarson is Iceland's best player although his best years were in the late 1980s. He took the title from Hannes Stefansson who reduced the margin of victory by winning in the final round. My thanks to Daði Örn Jónsson whose Chess in Iceland pages covered the event.

10) European Junior Chess Festival in Estonia

The European Junior Championships were hosted by Tallinn Estonia. The under 20 events for boys and girls took place September 10th-20th. The event was won by Dimitri Tyomkin from Israel who will be too old to enter next year. The same is true for the second placed player, Scotsman Jonathan Rowson. Both players should be well worth looking out for in the coming years. The women's event Sofiko Tkeshelashvili a Georgian who was born in 1979.

Almost immediately after there is the World Junior Championships in Yerevan. I have yet to find a web site.
