1) Introduction

My thanks to TASC, Dadi Jonsson and his Chess in Iceland page, Lost Boys, IM Gyula Feher, Janos Tompa, John Saunders, Zoltan Blazsik, Istvan Horvath, Laszlo Nagy, Derek Jones, Luis Santos, Chess in Portugal, Gerald Schendel, Rolf Sander, Thorsten Heedt, Antonio Bento, Gerhard Hund and all those who helped with this issue.

Apologies first for the late arrival of twic this week (although some might pick it up via ftp early) a major systems crash caused the www site to be down a few days. Some exciting chess at the World team Championships were the highlight of the week. Elsewhere there has been much of interest also.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) 4th World Team Championships

The World Team Championships tries to bring together the best teams from the different continents. Its actually a very difficult event to qualify for with the Olympiad and various regional competitions providing the different teams. This does mean that some good teams do miss out, nevertheless there are many strong players here.

The favourites will be Russia, although without Kasparov, Karpov or Kramnik they are not as strong as they could be. Nevertheless their strength in depth is impressive. The US, England, Ukraine all ought to be in the shakeup at the end. Of interest in the early rounds were the two games of Peter Svidler and the play of Vassily Ivanchuk.

The early rounds suggest that the competition could be close. Russia were held by both Armenia and Switzerland, and the US and England are very close too. There is much to look forward to next week.

Internet coverage is live and the event can be followed round by round at: http://www.tasc.nl/lucerne97

3) Hungarian Superchampionships

Budapest is the venue of the Hungarian Chess "super Championships". The first three rounds saw all the games were drawn except for the games of Lajos Portisch in rounds one and two. In round 4 there were two decisive games where favourites Almasi and Leko both won. These games have now been cancelled following Portisch's withdrawal from the event. His complaint (and by all accounts a justified one) is that there was a lot of noise from a nearby restaurant which started around the time of the first time control. Whilst it seems he was outplayed in the game against Leko, he believes he wrecked a winning position in the second game due to the noise. Portisch was justified in his complaint in some ways but his withdrawal seems precipitate before the organisers had chance to try and solve the problem. My thanks to IM Gyula Feher and Janos Tompa for the games and Zoltan Blazsik, Istvan Horvath and Laszlo Nagy for their help.

Janos Tompa who works for the Hungarian Chess Federation as a supervisor and trainer sends news of the Hungarian Super Championships. This year's Championships were called the super-championships because only the best rated players were invited. The last such Championships were organised in 1991 and was won by Judit Polgar in a performance that earned her the GM title. This year she was also invited but declined the invitation.

The main sponsors of the event are HUNGAROPHARMA Medicament Commercial Company and the Hotel HILTON Budapest which is the venue of the event as well. The prize fund is 4 million Hungarian Forints (appr. 20250 US Dollars) and the 1st prize is 1,25 million Hungarian Forints. The tournament started on the 21st October as a six player double round all-play-all tournament which will finish on 31st October.

In the first round Leko won against Portisch in an attractive positional game. Portisch chose a risky variation of the Sicilian and was met by a very strong new answer 12.Bc4 after that White had a clear advantage all game. Sax has got a pawn in the opening from Chernin, but later Chernin's counterplay was enough to complicate the position and the opponents agreed draw. Almasi tried to beat Pinter, but Black's Spanish was defendable.

The second round ended in a very unpleasant manner. Portisch, for the first time in his life, withdrew from the tournament. He had a very good position against Pinter but after the first time control he made some dubious moves which caused difficulties. He did not want to play for draw and Pinter's counterplay was successful. At the end Portisch blundered a rook and resigned. After having finished the game he declared his withdrawal. He explained his mistakes were due to the music which could be heard inside from the neighbouring restaurant. Telling the truth the troubling noise started just after the first time control. The organizers had no possibility to change the circumstances at that moment because the restaurant does not belong to the Hotel HILTON. The other games in the second round were relatively short draws although Leko played the sharp Keres Attack against Sax's Scheveningen. The results of Portisch were deleted of course and somebody will have a bye in each subsequent round.

The third round began with two games only and both ended draw. Almasi had great chances to beat Leko but he missed 21. b3 which conservates his good position with a pawn up. In a little time pressure Almasi blundered 24...Rg4. He was very disappointed and agreed draw.

The fourth round was very combative. Pinter played a bad variation and Leko won a brilliant endgame. Almasi was very agressive even with Black in his game against Sax. Sax thought too long in the opening and when he started to attack his opponent's King his sacrifice was not correct.

In the last round of the first part of the championship the players played two draws. The Chernin-Leko was an interesting Grunfeld maybe some novelties for the theory. Nobody knows who had better position when Leko proposed draw and Chernin accepted. The other game was draw as well between Pinter and Sax. Maybe Sax had a more comfortable game but he had only 19 minutes for the remaining moves.

4) Visa Nordic Final Grand Prix 1997

The centenary of the Nordic Championships and the final event of the Nordic Grand Prix 1996-7 is taking place in Reykjavic Iceland October 8th-22nd. The event was won by Johann Hjartarson who outlasted Jonny Hector to take the title. Hjartarson was undefeated and scored very heavily, not just against the tail enders either. Hector who has a violent chess style, at least in the past only came unstuck in the final round when he needed a win to catch Hjartarson, nevertheless this is one of his very best results. Aswell as being the conclusion to the VISA Nordic Grand Prix it is also the Nordic Championships. A Category 10 event showing off the strength of Nordic Chess.

Chess in Iceland is covering the event at: http://www.vks.is/skak/indexe.html the event has been the most successful in the pages history. Dadi Jonsson has covered Icelandic and Nordic chess for some time and his pages are a model for others to follow. An exciting last few rounds are likely.

6) Predrag Nikolic wins the Dutch Championships Playoff

A four game match between Jan Timman and Predrag Nikolic ended with victory for Nikolic. The Bosnian from Sarajevo now lives in the Netherlands. The match was pretty close with game 3 being the only decisive game. Indeed at one stage it looked like Timman might win this game, but in time trouble he lost the thread. The match was in Rotterdam in the offices of the sponsor, 'Broekhuis Training' coverage was at the Lost Boys site.

7) Owens Corning Wrexham Wales.

The Owens Corning event organised by Nigel Davies finished in Wrexham in North Wales last week. My thanks to Derek Jones for the games and news. Andrew Kinsman lead all the way and won the event by half a point from veteran Mark Taimanov who was also very impressive, I believe that Kinsman also scored a GM norm.

8) London International GM Tournament

Adam Raoof has organised three tournaments in London. A GM, IM and rating event. Adam has just been awarded the title of FIDE International organizer a much deserved award for someone who has, since June 1996 organised: 7 IM norm tournaments (1 cat 3, 5 cat 4 and 1 cat 6) 1 GM tournament (cat 10) 2 Challenge Matches 1 team event (London vs Beijing) 2 swisses and 4 FIDE rating tournaments. Great stuff.

The current series of events in London take place October 18th-24th at the University College School, Frognal, Hampstead NW3.

The event was won by Jonathan Rowson who also scored a GM norm. In joint second were GM Neil McDonald and young British star Luke McShane. Although Luke McShane missed the GM norm by half a point he is clearly improving as a player and the GM title isn't too far off.

There was a second event which was run under the Schiller System whose main point is to establish rating performances and norms. The highest point-scorer was Poland's Krystzof Panczyk who put in a most calm and assured performance. Richard Bates was also unbeaten and easily achieved his goal of boosting his grade past the 2400 figure. He already has a sufficiency of IM norms, but achieved another one anyway. Eirik Gullaksen of Norway also achieved an IM norm, with some comfort, though he lost in the penultimate round. Canada's Jonathan Berry fell short of a norm by one point, and may have rued the miss of a clear win towards the end of his epic against Miroslav Houska. (John Saunders from the 4NCL page.)
