1) Introduction

My thanks to Telmo Escobar, Herman Claudius van Riemsdijk, Yvette Nagel Seirawan, Inside Chess, Lost Boys, Petra Schuurman, Juergen Daniel, Egon Ditt, Frank Zimmermann, Vojin Vujosevic, Laszlo Nagy, Thomas Leckner, Torstein Hall, Marius van Riemsdijk, Pascal Rossi, Europe Echecs, Junior Tay Editor of the Singapore Chess Digest, Dr. Ross F. Amann, Luis Santos and all those who helped with this issue.

Lots of chess this week in events which often were effectively preparation for the FIDE World Championships event that starts next week. It seems to have been confirmed that Kramnik has withdrawn from the event with Malcolm Pein in the Telegraph saying that he had been threatened by legal action over this action. Kramnik seems to be the only last minute withdrawal. We now await the event with interest, in particular how the events new format which is aimed at media coverage works. More on the runup to the event on my pages next week.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) 1st Hoogovens USA Chess Festival

The 1st Hoogovens USA Chess Festival took place over the weekend November 28th - 30th. Hoogovens is well known for its involvement in the tournaments in Wijk aan Zee but it is less well known that it has a US part aswell. Mr. Reg Groves the manager of the Hoogovens Technical Services office in Merrillville, Indiana opened the event. There were 6 Grandmasters, who played in a Netherlands vs USA event. In addition there were 60 amateur players in other events. There were two games a day for rounds 1-4 in the main section one starting in the morning the other in the afternoon. It was a tough schedule but there were only five rounds. The final round saw Loek Van Wely catch the leader Jan Timman to share first place. Timman was disappointed not to win the event alone after pressing hard against Yermolinsky. Going into the final round four out of the six players had some chance of taking first place and the prize of $5000.

4) Matthias Wahls wins the German Championships

Juergen Daniel reports that the 1997 German Champion is Matthias Wahls. Wahls won the event with 7/9 ahead of GM Christopher Lutz, who finished second with 6,5/9 with IM Karsten Müller. 10 GMs took part. There was an increased prize-fund with a CITROEN car for the winner. Wahls, has to wait a little bit to drive the car as he has no driving license. He was satisfied with his play, especially after considering, that apart from the Bundesliga, he hasn´t played for 11 months. Just before the championship he finished a book on the Scandinavian, which will be out in December. My thanks to Egon Ditt and Frank Zimmermann for the games from the event.

5) Larsen holds on to win in La Plata

The 3rd AMEBS (Asociacion Mutual de Empleados de Bienestar Social) took place in La Plata Argentina November 16 - 27. La Plata is the capital of province Buenos Aires (Argentinians call the city Buenos Aires 'Capital Federal', something like Washington DC. It isn't part of Buenos Aires Province.) After starting with 6/6 Bent Larsen then lost his next two games and had to wait until the final round to secure the draw he needed to take the tournament. My thanks to Telmo Escobar and Herman Claudius van Riemsdijk who sent news of the event.

7) Ontario Closed 1997

Vojin Vujosevic reports.

This year's edition of the Ontario Closed was weaker than expected as a number of strong players declined. Nineteen year old Eduardo Teodoro IV of Toronto, a.k.a. "King Eddie", took the first place with an apparent ease. That brought him $500 first prize, guaranteed participation in the next year's Canadian Closed and Zonal Championship and paid airfare to wherever that tournament will take place. In Canada where the distances and the airfare costs are gargantuan this means alot. The event was organized and directed by Alexander Knox, Shivaharan Thurairasah and yours truly Vojin Vujosevic. It took place from November 15 -23 at the downtown Toronto Best Western Primrose Hotel, the perennial site of major chess events and the site of the next year's Toronto International Open May 14 - 18, 1998 which features $26,000 in guaranteed prizes.

13) Karpov Simul

Junior Tay Editor of the Singapore Chess Digest reports that FIDE World Champion, Anatoly Karpov was in Singapore from 26 - 28 November.

He met up witht the Minister of Education, Rear Admiral Teo Chee Hean and also held a press conference. When asked how Chess benefits oneself, he said that from chess he learns how to plan his moves in his political career. Karpov also proposed that the education authorities may induct Chess into the local school curriculum. On the 28th of November, Karpov held a simultaneous match against 25 opponents at the Singapore Intellectual Games Centre (Bishan). His opponents include some national players as well as the top local juniors. The fact that more than 200 spectators were present can attest to Karpov's popularity with the local chess players. Our local tournaments seldom hit the 100 participants mark...

14) Kasparov Simul Controversy

Dr. Ross F. Amann who was the team captain in a game terminated by Kasparov due to suspected use of a computer has more to say on the controversy. He had previously strenuously denied the use of a computer. He was approached by Robert Astrom who believed the game was computer assisted. They worked together to look at the situation he takes up what they discovered:

1. One of my teammate's accounts on the ICC has been shown to have played several games (mostly vs. computers) where the account's moves matched those of Fritz 4.
2. My teammate denies being solely responsible for those games. He claims some were played by another person; some by him with this other person suggesting computer moves.
3. That he did not use a computer during the game with Kasparov.

It is clear that my teammate violated ICC policy in these computer-assisted games. Analyzing my teammate's suggested moves (as opposed to our team moves) for computer influence depends upon memory. A lot of effort has been spent on this, mostly by Mr. Astrom with assistance from myself and impartial observers. He makes a case for guilt; but it depends upon some assumptions - such as how much time my teammate spent deciding on Mr. Kasparov's next move before he asked the computer to analyze our best reply as well as inattention or network lag at one critical moment. In any event, my teammate was less than forthright in encouraging me to deny Mr. Kasparov's accusations without any warning. Without the assistance of Mr. Astrom I would have continued down this dangerous path.
