1) Introduction

My thanks James Eade, Tomas Micanek, Laszlo Nagy, Europe Echecs, Gary Bekker, Chess Assistant, Jack Peters, Hans Groffen, Jan Ooteman and all those who helped with this issue.

The start of the Biel Chess Festival and Hodgson's win in California are amongst the bigger events this week. Again a large crop of games. The British Chess Championships start next Saturday with the first appearance by Nigel Short for many years, although he will not be joined by Michael Adams who played last year. A note on the ratings used in this issue. I haven't yet got a copy of the full new ELO rating list for July so January ratings are used throughout the games sections.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

4) Mechanics' Grandmaster Invitational

James Eade reports on the category 10 3rd Mechanics Institute GM invitational in San Francisco.

The 3rd Annual Mechanics' Institute GM Invitational was won in fine fashion by Julian Hodgson with an impressive 7/9 score. Julian won $1,500 in prize money and an additional $624 in point money. His last round draw with Benjamin clinched first place. Shortly after their draw was agreed upon Fedorowicz- Lobo was agreed drawn, which clinched at least a share of second for Fedorowicz.

Hours later Chrisitansen drew into a tie for second by defeating IM Guillermo Rey in a long major piece ending. Christiansen and Fedorowicz finished with 6/9 and split $1,500 in prize money. Christiansen earned $520 in point money and Fedorowicz $416.

(One bulletin demoted Fedorowicz to an IM by mistake, and we took great pleasure in congratulating John on earning a GM norm.)

Benjamin and Atalik tied for fourth with 5.5/9 and shared $750 in prize money.

Special thanks go to the Mechanics' Institute for its continued generousity in sponsoring elite events. The Institute's President, Mark Pinto, and the organizer, Jim Eade, also deserve mention for their financial assistance.

Hodgson is obviously liked by his peers and may be one of the most pleasant people in chess to be around. His win was acknowledged as deserving by all the competitors, and he has earned his place in the hearts of the San Francisco chess community.

He also continued the dominance of the British Isles in July events in San Francisco. Last year Irish GM Alexander O'Baburin (sic) took clear first in the Universe Open (held over the July Fourth weekend,) and clear first in the 2nd Mechanics' GM Invitational. Hodgson duplicated the feat this year. Perhaps the similarity in climate is the explanation. In any case, if I were a titled player from Scotland, I know where I would be next July!

8) The 1998 Southern California Championships

Jack Peters reports:

The 1998 Southern California Championship, an eight-player round robin conducted by the Southern California Chess Federation (SCCF) ended in a three-way tie for first place among Levon Altounian, Cyrus Lakdawala, and Jack Peters. Each scored 5-2 in the invitational event, held July 11-12 and July 18-19 in Irvine, California. Next were Valdis Saulespurens, 4-3; William Longren, 3-4; Charles Van Buskirk, 2.5-4.5; Ron Hermansen, 2-5; and Steven Jones, 1.5-5.5. The Southern California Championship is one of two annual state championships run by the SCCF. The second, the Southern California Open, will be held September 5-7 (Labor Day weekend) in Los Angeles. Lakdawala, the 1997 champion, blundered horribly in losses to Jones and Saulespurens in Rounds One and Three. However, he won his last four games and inflicted defeats on both of his co-winners. Altounian played steadiest until he lost in the final round to Lakdawala.

9) Geelong Open

The Geelong Open took place 11-12 July 1998. Report by Gary Bekker.

The Geelong Open attracted only 35 entants this year. It appears that players were concerned about the scheduling of four 3-hour games on the Saturday and the clash with the World Cup Soccer finals. Despite this the top end of the field was very strong. Both of Australia's Grandmasters took part and nearly one quarter of the field was rated over 2000! Right from the start of the tournament, several promising juniors made it clear that they would make their presence felt throughout the tournament. These were Sam Chow, Matthew Doidge, and Gordon Lindberg who played very well throughout the weekend, collecting many high-rated scalps between them along the way. Higher up in the field, some of the big names in the tournament played each other as early as round three. Rogers, Johansen and Booth defeated Chapman, Depasquale and M.Kagan respectively to take the early lead, while Gluzman was lucky to escape with a draw against Rujevic. In round four Rogers defeated Johansen, in a tough game which Darryl misplayed in time trouble, while Booth lost to Gluzman. This gave Ian Rogers the outright lead, with Gluzman half a point behind him. In the following round Rogers beat Gluzman to secure a full one point lead ahead of Johansen, Chapman, Depasquale and Rujevic who had also won their games. In the final round Rogers drew with Rujevic, the only person to have beaten Rogers here in Australia for more than a year, to secure first place. Chapman defeated Johansen in another intense struggle, and Depasquale and Gluzman won their games against lower rated opponents. This gave Chapman and Depasquale equal second, and Rujevic and Gluzman equal third. Rating group prize winners were women's Olympiad team member, Natalie Guy, Dimitry Partsi, Shumsheer Ghumman, and Terry Feduniw. Gordon Lindberg won the best junior prize while Ian Boasman collected the prize for best Geelong player.
