2) Korchnoi wins in Bad Homburg

The 3rd International Chess tournament took place in Bad Homburg 16-26th July 1998. The event was won by veteran GM Viktor Korchnoi. In second was young Russian star Peter Svidler. There was an alternative scoring method in use throughout the event with three points for a win, one for a draw and nothing for a loss. This had practically no effect on the final standings except that Torre shared 3rd place with Jussupow instead of coming fourth. Both the conventional and new scoring systems are given in the tables. Its unclear what the effect of using this scoring system will have on the rateability of the the event.

6) Saitek US Masters

The Saitek US Masters started on Tuesday, July 21 at the Hawaiian Monarch Hotel in Waikiki, on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. The undoubted story of the first few days was the 4-0 start of US unknown Ben Deng. After beating Irina Krush in round one he beat GMs Pavel Blatny, Ian Rogers and Patrick Wolff in successive rounds. My thanks to Eric Schiller for games and results from the early rounds

13) Rebel vs. Anand

Viswanathan Anand played the computer program REBEL, July 21-23 1998 on the island of Ischia (Italy). There were 8 games. The first four were played at the time rate of 5 minutes + 5 seconds per move. The next two at 15 minutes for all the moves. The final two were normal timerate games. The exhibition saw Anand lose the first three five minute games before getting on the scoreboard. Anand then lost the first 15 minute game (played with a normal, not electronic chess clock) on time when he appeared to lose track of the time in a favourable position. The second 15 minute game and last on day one was drawn. Days two and three were given over to a single game played at a near normal international timerates. Anand was clearly surprised in game one by the use of the Chigorin's defence. Anand seemed quickly to lose the advantage, hoping perhaps the two bishops might give him some long term chances. As it was the game turned into a race which Anand looked slightly slower. In the end Anand reached an ending which should be drawn by perpetual. In the final game Anand cleverly sucked the computer into complications which left him with some winning chances in an unbalanced position which he converted.

Tim McGrew sends news of the US Cadet Championships. They were held from July 09, 1998 to July 12, 1998 at the Nashville Chess Center in Nashville, TN. Vinay Bhat and Dmitry Schneider tied for first with scores of 5-2. Schneider won the trophy on tiebreak. Noah Siegel won the Best Game award for his sacrificial kingside attack against Jordy Mont-Reynaud. Vinay Bhat received the second place award for his positional squeeze of Siegel. Zaremba-Bhat was a time forfeit without, apparently, White's making any moves.
