1) Introduction

My thanks to Eric Schiller, El Pais, Net64, Kevin O'Connell, Forum 64, Europe-Echecs, Rod McShane, John Saunders, John Henderson, Przemek and Uhlrich Jahr, Zoltan Blazsik, Jakub Fuksik of Agentura 64, Jonathan Berry, Lic Hugo a Balam Lopez, Laslo Nagy, Adrian Roldan (AJEDREZ ARGENTINO MultiWeb ) and all those who helped with this issue.

National Championships dominate the chess this week, especially those of Spain, France and Argentina which are very representative. Kramnik defeated Adams in the annual WDR TV match in an interesting game. The oddest story of the week is one which I'm trying to confirm the details. Galliamova was due to play a ten game match against Xie Jun in China starting on August 15th. She did not show according to Chinese sources and is reported to have defaulted the match allowing Xie Jun to challenge Polgar for the World title. There is surely more to this than meets the eye.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) WDR Chess Match. Kramnik beats Adams

Vladimir Kramnik beat Michael Adams in their live chess game on 16th August. Kramnik had white but needed to win the game, he should now be invited to play again in the event next year. Kramnik chose a very sharp variation and both sides seemed to have the advantage at one stage or another. The game was finished in mutual time trouble with Adams eventually losing a piece. The "WDR : Schach der Großmeister '98" was live on 3SAT and will be repeated on 24th August from 00-15 CET on WDR3, via the ASTRA satellite. GM Pfleger and GM Hort comment on the game which took place in studio B, Westdeutscher Rundfunk Koeln.

5) Saitek US Masters and Cardoza US Open

The Saitek US Masters ran July 21-29th at the Hawaiian Monarch Hotel in Waikiki, on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. The event was won by Boris Gulko ahead of ELO favourite Ian Rogers. The event was followed by the Cardoza USA Open (report from Eric Schiller follows).

Judit Polgar became the first woman to win the Cardoza US Open.

Grandmaster Judit Polgar of Hungary became the first woman to earn the title of US Open Champion in the 99th Annual US Open Chess Championship, sponsored by Cardoza Publishing, held in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii,m August 1-9. She tied with Grandmaster Boris Gulko (New Jersey) with a score of 8 points out of nine. Each player won seven games, drew two, and suffered no losses. Gulko had just won the Saitek US Masters in Honolulu the previous week and became the first player to win both the US Masters and US Open in a single year. Over 300 players competed in distant Hawaii, a very respectable number given that even most of the players from Hawaii had to fly to Kona and stay in the hotel. The Kona Surf Resort provided the most attractive setting ever for a US Open. The spacious convention facilities hosted not only the main tournament, but also workshops, USCF meetings, lectures, simuls and skittles. Instructional classes were offered every morning, and a variety of side events were available in the afternoon. Most participants chose to spend their time exploring the tropical paradise of the Big Island of Hawaii, and the tournament organizers helped to arrange a variety of excursions.

Unlike most American tournaments, the Cardoza US Open offered special conditions to Grandmasters, attracting the strongest field ever. Instead of "class prizes", players were treated to high-class chess stars. A single prize of $500 was offered in each 100-point rating class, but special prizes were also offered to teams, women and all those scoring 4-0 in the final four rounds, to provide an incentive to play for a win. The prize fund was subsidized by corporate sponsorship, allowing the entry fee to be lowered to under $100. Cardoza Publishing, one of the most active chess publishers, provided title sponsorship of $10,000. Generous assistance from Saitek Industries insured that all games were played with digital clocks, a first for the US Open. Kona Systems developed a special java applet for viewing games and host the official web site at www.konasys.com/chess. Pacific Farmers Cooperative supplied famous Kona coffee and macadamia nuts for the GM hospitality room, and Kona Brewing provided their excellent microbrews. Kailua Candy, a gourmet candy shop, took care of the kids with daily deliveries of fine confections.

The event was organized by Larry Reifurth, President of the Hawaii Chess Federation, and Eric Schiller of Chessworks Unlimited. Their goal was not to turn a profit, but rather to put on a tournament which upheld the standards traditionally found in Europe. In addition they wanted to make the US Open a vacation tournament for the entire family, as well as providing excellent playing conditions for this important event. GM Judith Polgar and GM Boris Gulko shared first prize with 8 and received $3,750.00 each. GM Alek Wojtkiewicz, GM Ian Rogers and GM Tal Shaked scored 7.5 and shared third through fifth prize, earning $1,000.00 each. GM Joel Benjamin, GM Georgi Kacheishvili, GM Eduard Gufeld, Michael Mulyar and IM Gerard Welling scored 7 points and shared sixth place. They each received $410.00. IM John Watson also scored 7, but received the higher prize of $500 for the best result by a player rated below 2400. Players who scored 6.5 points also received cash prizes. The $1000 prize for best result by female players was divided between IM Sofia Polgar and Jennifer Shahade for 6.5 points.

Prizes were awarded for each 100-point rating class below 2400. The winners were IM John Watson (Under 2400, $500); Ludo Tolhuizen, Henry Terrie, Eugene Levin, Philip Wang, Hikaru Nakamura, Thomas Crispin, Joe Hanley, (Under 2300 , $71.43 each); Peter Dyson (Under 2200, $500.00), Nat Koons and Michael Morrison (Under 2100 and 2000, $500.00 each); Josh Kaul, Michael Frayer, David Hasegawa (Under 1900 and Under 1800, $333 each); Alan Petit, Richard Wagner, Eric Wagner (Under 1700 and Under 1600 and Under 1500, $500 each); Peter Newhall, Rexford Cristal (Under 1400, $250 each) Rebecca Lynch, Cristopher Wong (Under 1300 and Under 1200, $500 each); Nicholis Lynch (Under 1100, $500.00).

Jennie Frenklakh, Michael Morrison 6 Hikaru Nakamura 6.5 Eric Wagner each won a special prize of $250.00 for winning each game in round 6-9. The 1999 Hawaii International Chess Festival will be a smaller affair, as it returns to its traditional dates right after the National Open (March 19-21) in Las Vegas. The festival will move to Maui next year, March 23-31. It will offer round robin sections with IM norms, and a special David Bronstein Jubilee. The Bronstein Jubilee (March 23-27), celebrating the great Grandmaster's 75th birthday, will feature mini-matches using a time control of game/20 + 10" per move (non-accumulating) and is open to all. Play will be in the evenings, leaving the entire day free for sightseeing, chess instruction, or side events. Contact Hawaii@chessworks.com or visit www.chessworks.com for details as they become available. Special flights from Las Vegas to Hawaii are being arranged, so that it will be easy to play two great events in two fabulous vacations resorts in the space of just ten days.

At their annual meetings, the USCF adopted a rule that effective July 1, 1999, all events in the US designated as FIDE rated must be played under FIDE rules. The US therefore finally agrees to conform to FIDE's existing rating regulations, which some major American organizers had been ignoring. In addition, Chess Life magazine will make it clear that all events not specifically designated as FIDE rated are played under American rules. The USCF also pledged to work with FIDE to reconcile rule differences. The action was a result of a motion by International Arbiter Eric Schiller, with support from Jim Eade. It passed overwhelmingly, despite some political attempts to block it. FIDE Executive Director Emmanuel Omuku, who was present at the meetings, stated that this was a positive step in bringing the US into conformity with the other 151 members of FIDE, and promised to listen to concerns raised by American organizers. It is expected that some American organizers will request modification of FIDE rules at the next FIDE congress, but it is unlikely that FIDE will lower their standards to the extent requested. FIDE rules have already been modified to allow for large and understaffed swiss events of the sort common in the US.

8) Lippstadt Tournament

The GM tournament in Lippstadt took place 29.7.-9.8. 1998 in the Hotel "Residenz , Lippstadt. There was daily coverage on the internet at: http://www.dpl.net/user/DPL-00239/Gm98.htm

14-year old IM Luke McShane has won the Category X Hans & Lenze grandmaster tournament in Lippstadt, Germany, achieving his first grandmaster norm in the process.

McShane, who is a frequent visitor to Germany, plays top board for SV Erfurt in the Bundesliga. He joins the very select number of youngsters to have achieved a GM norm at age 14. His immediate predecessors Etienne Bacrot of France and Ruslan Ponomarov of the Ukraine are now both GMs. But McShane's is still younger than the first by Bobby Fischer, who became a GM at 15. The previous record holder for the youngest British GM norm is World No.8 Michael Adams who achieved all of his at 17.

For the second year running the Lippstadt tournament awarded the prize fund on the basis of three points for a win, one for a draw and zero for a loss. This gave McShane first prize outright as GM Giorgi Giorgadze who also finished on 7/11 had more draws.

At one point it looked as if the computer Zugzwang would be the runaway winner of the tournament. Developed at nearby Paderborn University and a regular competitor at Lippstadt, it led with 5/7 and was running a performance rating of 2640 before Slovenian IM Dusko Pavasovic's exemplary win against it in Round 8. After seven rounds McShane's norm task looked well nigh impossible. He needed 3.5/4 with all three GMs still to play. For seven hours he ground out a 93 move draw with Black against Giorgadze, having been a pawn down from the middle game. He then had another marathon in Round 9 against IM Wilhelmi winning in over 120 moves after having to promote to a bishop to avoid stalemate and then mate with bishop and knight. Then GM Bischoff miscalculated a winning attack leaving Luke requiring a win with White against GM Kindermann, who had not lost only one game in the tournament and that against the computer. McShane became an IM in Gelsenkirchen last Easter. He is coached by GMs Jon Speelman and Bogdan Lalic. The City of London schoolboy has been sponsored by the computer company Psion UK since 1995.

10) Dresden Tournaments

A Scheveningen-style England-Germany Women's international match was won convincingly 27.5-22.5 by the English women, thanks primarily to a wonderful performance by Jovanka Houska, who scored 9/10 for a 2575 rating performance. The event took place July 16th-25th.

The tournament was a five player double round Scheveningen team tournament, which aided the choice of England's fourth board for the Olympiad - with a score of 9/10 and a 2500+ rating, it looks like Jovanka Houska.

Alongside this event was an open won by Wolfgang Uhlmann.
