1) Introduction
----------------

My thanks to Jan Van De Mortel, Andrew Kinsman, Roberto Alvarez,
Brian Stephenson, Wlodek Proskurowski, Eric Schiller, Jaime Calvin,
Otto Borik, Michael Niermann, Shay Bushinsky, Warren Rayle and Maher Saleh
for their help and contributions to this issue.

Highlights for me are Brian Stephenson's article on last weekend's
British Problem Solving Championships including next year's
starter problem! (We think TWIC will be first!) There is an
opportunity for all to enter, although it is open only for fun
for those outside the UK.

Also Roberto Alvarez's articles from Argentina, a place who's events
probably haven't been covered too well by TWIC in the past.

In addition Eric Schiller's reports from his Pan Pacific International.
All in all there are quite a lot of events covered this week.

I've also learned a little about grepping this week. In combination
with a full January Elo list this may lead to a little more accuracy
and information.

Mark Crowther

2) Linares 1995.
----------------

I repeat this information in the vain hope that we won't see
a spate of "when is Linares" postings this week. I hope to
have a significant number of games for TWIC 22.

This week sees the start of the Linares GM Tournament
Feb. 28th - Mar. 18th.

Category 17.
------------
Karpov (2765) Shirov (2710) Ivanchuk (2700) Lautier (2655) Akopian (2655)

I will try and keep my www page up to date with at least results, but
no guaratees.

3) Kamksy troubles continued.
----------------------------

Rustam Kamsky has been in trouble again. Bill Hartston in the says:
that "Kamsky senior suggested that FIDE were withholding some
prizemoney and expenses." He later apologies in writing.
He was fined 150 Swiss Francs (78 UK pounds) for "uncalled for
utterances" and this will be deducted from the 97,000 UK pounds that
Gata won.

Here is an extract of the letter to him:

"By virtue of authority vested in me by FIDE statute, I am applying a token
fine in the amount of 150 Swiss Francs. Any ressurrence of this or similar
behavior in the future wil be dealt severely. The amount will be deducted
from the prize fund of your player, unless you pay it earlier directly to
the Organizing Council which will transmit it to FIDE."

(Signed: Campomanes)

There are some unsubstantiated rumours that this isn't the end of the
matter. I will report any further news.

The Kamsky roadshow continues in early March:
PCA Semi-finals Kamksy/Anand Las Palmas.	Mar. 8th - Mar. 25th

4) Interpolis withdraw from chess sponsorship.
---------------------------------------------

It is with great sadness that we learnt that another chess sponsor
has had to give up. Interpolis who have sponsored an international
tournament in Tilburg for the last 18 years have announced that
due to cost cutting they have had to carry out. I thank them for
their sponsorship and hope that maybe in better times they will
return to chess. These events have been amongst the most famous and
enjoyable events in the chess calendar. Valery Salov was the final
winner of the event last October.

5) Luke McShane secures Psion sponsorship.
-------------------------------------------

11 year old British Junior Luke McShane secured a 12,000 UK Pounds
sponsorship deal with Psion (hand-held computer manufacturers)
to help him with travel and expenses to tournaments.

and Slobodan Kovacevic is a real 50/50 situation as both have the right
grades for the draw.

ROUND 1 21.02.95
-------------------

Gulko 1-0 Waitzkin
Nunn 1-0 Tisdall
Ashley 0-1 Korchnoi
Xie Jun 1/2 DeFirmian
Browne 1/2 Huebner
Polgar 0-1 Christiansen

The first round of the Pan-Pacific International was an
exciting affair with no quick results. The pre-tournament
favorites dominated the play. Top seed Viktor Korchnoi defeated
Maurice Ashley. The public quickly gravitated to the encounter
between Sophia Polgar and Larry Christiansen, a wild affair
which was difficult to analyze. When the smoke cleared the
result was a rook and pawn endgame which drifted into the third
and final time control and Christiansen prevailed. Xie Jun
quickly fell into time pressure, as did her opponent, Nick
DeFirmian. Eventually the game resolved into a draw. Browne and
Huebner drew after an interesting struggle, in which Browne,
short of time, feels that he may have missed some chances. Nunn
and Tisdall ran a marathon, with a quiet opening leading to a
dificult endgame, which Tisdall mishandled in time pressure.

The playing hall was crowded with spectators, who followed the
action on large monitors running Chessmaster 4000 software from
Mindscape. Specators also followed commentary by Grandmaster
Larry Evans in the Analysis room, where t-shirts and a large
selection of chess books are available.

ROUND 2 22/02/95
------------------------

Waitzkin 1/2 Nunn
Tisdall 1/2	Ashley
Korchnoi 1/2 Xie Jun
Huebner 1/2 Polgar
Christiansen 0-1 Gulko
DeFirmian 1/2 Browne

The second round saw six fighting encounters, even though five of the
games ended up drawn. In the only decisive game, United States Champion
Boris Gulko took sole control of first place by defeating Larry
Christiansen. The game between Walter Browne and Nick DeFirmian was
especially exciting. Browne fell into extreme time pressure and made the
required forty moves with just one second remaining. If he had failed to
make the move in time the game would have been awarded to his opponent.
John Nunn was in a speculative mood and invested a knight for mere
pawns, but Josh Waitzkin defended well and seemed on the verge of
winning, but Nunn succeeded in steering the game into a drawn position.
Jon Tisdall's string of ill-luck continued as he let a win slip through his
fingers against Maurice Ashley. He attributes this to a "curse" placed upon
him by his son William, who refused to wish him good luck because Jon
was leaving him for two weeks just as William is approaching his third
bithday. Szofia Polgar rebounded from her disappointing first round lost to
hold off veteran Grandmaster Robert Huebner.

Xie Jun 1/2 Tisdall
Polgar 0-1 deFirmian
Nunn 1/2 Gulko
Huebner 1/2 Christiansen
Browne 1/2 Korchnoi

The third round also saw six fighting encounters,
even though five of the games ended up drawn.
In the only decisive game, Zsofia Polgar built up a strong
attack against Nick deFirmian but Nick held fast and won.
Maurice Ashley nearly lost on time, failing to realize just how
bad his time pressure was. He cleared the time control with
just a single second to spare. Robert Huebner managed to draw
again, this time with Larry Christiansen. Boris Gulko and John
Nunn engaged in a battle of theoreticians in the French
Defense, but in the end neither was able to make progress.
Walter Browne and Viktor Korchnoi had a few interesting
postions, but they did not become unbalanced enough to allow
either player to gain a full point. Jonathan Tisdall remains
under a curse. He could have won with one correct move today,
as was also the case yesterday, but missed his chance and
allowed Xie Jun to draw. Instead of 1-2, he ought to be leading
the tournament with 2.5 from 3. His 3 year old son, home in
Norway still refuses to wish him good luck, and we can only
hope that the youngster changes his mind and stops the flow of
minor mistakes that have cost Tis a half point in each of the
games so far.

On Saturday, at noon, three local young stars will face
off against each other and the Chessmaster 4000 computer
program in 25 minute chess. This is the first of two legs in
the Chessmaster Youth Challenge sponsored by Mindscape. The
other leg will be played Saturday, March 4. Participating are
Vinay Bhat (America's youngest master at 10), Jordy
Mont-Reynaud (America's youngest FIDE rated player, with a
rating of 2285 at age 11) and Jennie Frenklakh (14, one of the
most talented girls in the country). Play takes place at the
same venue as the Pan-Pacific: the Jade Room at the Holiday
Inn, 750 Kearny Street, Chinatown, San Francisco.

ROUND 4 24/02/95
-----------------

Waitzkin 0-1 Xie Jun
Tisdall 1/2 Browne
Gulko 1-0 Ashley
Korchnoi 1-0 Polgar
DeFirmian 0-1 Huebner
Christiansen 1/2 Nunn

The veterans took charge in the fourth round, punishing their
younger counterparts with spectacular sacrifices and
combinations and taking advantage of every opportunity. Boris
Gulko, the 48 year-old former Soviet dissident, now leads the
pack with 3.5 out of 4. He defeated 29 year-old Maurice Ashley
by playing first on the queenside and then on the kingside.
Viktor Korchnoi, another Grandmaster who suffered persecution
under the Soviet regime, is right behind him. Korchnoi, the
oldest participant in the Pan Pacific International at 63,
defeated 19 year-old Zsofia Polgar in grand and youthful style,
optimistically sacrificing a pawn in the opening, another in
the middlegame, then giving up his queen for rook and knight,
and finally sacrificing yet another pawn. Robert Huebner (46)
beat Nick deFirmian, 8 years his junior, when the latter
sacrificed a pawn which was never returned. He is now tied for
third place with 2.5 points. The womens' World Champion, Xie
Jun, gained her share of third place by destroying Joshua
Waitzkin after the opening left him with a shattered pawn
structure. John Nunn also has 2.5 points, managing to draw an
endgame where he had a bishop against Larry Christiansen's rook
with equal pawns. The game lasted over 100 moves and went into
the sudden death session. Berkeley Grandmaster Walter Browne
continued his streak of draws, this time splitting the point
with Jonathan Tisdall.

			Brief review of the book
M. Botvinnik, `Botvinnik on the endgame', Chess Enterprises, 1985.

This little gem of a book (80 pages, 108 diagrams) is largely unknown, and
undeservedly so. It has been published ten years ago as a translation from
an original manuscript (Foreword is signed by the author in September 1982).
This is a very handsome paperback with clear outline and diagrams for a very
moderate price, $6. The book is a collection of 25 endgames played by Botvinnik
throughout his carrier from 1926 to 1970 against Alekhin, Bronstein, Fischer,
Keres, Smyslov, Tal, and others. For example, his 23rd game of the 1951 World
Championship match with Bronstein is here. Not only the analysis of the positions
(mostly adjourned ones) is extensive and insightful but it is supplemented
by colorful comments. Here is one example: `but Tal is Tal, and he might easily
see this tactical trick and choose the correct continuation. So, in order to
lull my partner's suspicions, I did not even take my usual thermos of coffee
to the adjournment - clearly I would resign in a few moves'. For TWIC I have
chosen the endgame against Portisch where Keres(!) found a study like solution.
One can purchase the book (still not out of print, as far as I know)

THE BRITISH CHESS SOLVING CHAMPIONSHIP, 1994/5 by Brian Stephenson
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The final of this long running chess problem solving competition was
held at Oakham School, Oakham, Rutland, England on Saturday 18th
February. 18 finalists (who qualified from over 600 entrants) sat
down to take part in the exam-style final. The event consisted of
5 timed rounds. Three two-movers in 20 minutes, a mate in three and
a mate in five in 50 minutes, an endgame study in 35 minutes, two
selfmates in 30 minutes and two helpmates in 25 minutes.
The very first round saw the eventual prizewinners taking the lead.
The third two-mover was tricky and only 4 of the finalists got it
right.
A result table follows.

        Mate in two

There is only one move which mates in two against any Black defence,
but there are three tries, which nearly work, failing to only one
Black defence. Can you do better than the expert finalists and get
it right? Answer next week.

The 1995/6 competition starts right here. Entries are invited, and
all you have to do is send me the first move of the tollowing mate
in two. British entrants should send me their entries via snail
mail and should enclose a cheque or postal order for 2.00 (UK pounds)
made payable to 'British Chess Problem Society', and a stamped addressed
envelope for receipt of the postal round. Successful solvers of
this starter problem will be sent a tougher postal round and the
top solvers from that will be invited to the final in early 1996. The
eventual winner will qualify for the British team in the World
Championships in 1996.
Non-British solvers are welcome to enter, but must do so by email,
please. Sadly, they will not be eligible for any prize money, nor
will they be invited to the final, so must take part just for fun.
Full results of the email competitors will be posted here in TWIC.
Entries should be sent by 30th June, 1995.
