1) Introduction

My thanks to Felix Izeta, Rubén Casafús and Adrián Roldán, Eric Schiller, Herman Van Riemsdijk, John Donaldson, Sinisa Joksic, Thomas Leckner, Herbert Scarry, Jack Lowry, John Hurley, Jon Speelman, Luis Santos, Lost Boys, Michael Atkins, ChessMate, Laszlo Nagy and all those who helped with this issue.

If news from Argentina is correct then June 19 - July 17, 1999 will see the delayed FIDE knockout event finally take place. The sooner this is confirmed in a widely disseminated press release the better. Elsewhere its a solid week of international chess, without anything spectacular but nevertheless a number of interesting events.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) 8th Elgoibar Tournament

Felix Izeta sends news and games from the 8th Elgoibar Tournament which took place November 21-29. The tournament was category XI and nobody got GM norms as it's a tradition in Elgoibar, where no player has ever got a norm. The games were all hardly fought, Ubilava starting strongly with 4 out of 4 but then collapsed as you can see. There was some fight for first place even until the last round but then Van der Wiel secured first place by offering a draw in a better position against Korneev. He deserved the victory and his performance was rather impressive. Izeta was one of the "local" players as Elgoibar is placed in the Bask country and he lives there. Gomez Esteban was the other Bask player. Elgoibar is a little town officially in Spain, but there is a background where the Bask people want independence or at least self-determination but both the Spanish and French authorities refuse the whole idea. Back to the chess, 16 year old Francisco Vallejo had a rather disappointing performance after some success in recent times. Fernandes from Portugal was always in time trouble and suffered 6 (!) consecutive defeats from rounds 2 to 7 but finally avoided last place. Mellado started with 0 out of 4. His last tournament had been the spanish team champ. where he started quite differently with 8 out of 8.

4) Max Wilkerson International

Vinay Bhat of San Jose won the Max Wilkerson International held November 18-30 at the Mechanics' Institute in downtown San Francisco. The 14-year-old Bhat's undefeated score of 8-3 not only won the event, but also gave him an IM norm in the Category 2 (229O) event reports John Donaldson.

Top-rated Philippine master Omar Cartagena (2435) failed to make his third and final IM norm, but shared second place at 7-4 with IMs Guillermo Rey, Mladen Vucic and John Grefe.

The Mechanics's Institute Chess Club, the oldest in the United States with continuous activity since 1855, is planning more norm events in 1999 and welcomes inquiries from potential participants. Contact IM John Donaldson at imwjd@aol.com or fax (415) 421-4551.

5) European Club Cup Qualifier

Sinisa Joksic reports on the final European Club Cup Qualifier (Preliminary Group 7) which took place in Belgrade, November 23rd-25th 1998.

Elitzur Petach (Tikva) from Israel qualified for the final. It was surprising because the host team from Zemun had the advantage on paper with Beliavsky and Gelfand on the first two boards. Only 4 teams turned up in Belgrade: Agrouniverzal - Zemun (YUG), Bestex - Nove Zomki (SVK), Kalijschik - Soligorsk (BLR) and Elitzur Petach -Tikva (ISL). The teams that were missing were Rimon - Kishnev (MDA), Miskolci SSC - Miskolc (HUN), Peristeri - Athens (GRE) and Konya - Yapi Spor (TUR). The teams could and did make an agreement to change the pairings, and so they played one match per day over the three days.

Day 1 (November, 23):
                  Elitzur Petach - Bestex 5:1
Smirin Ilia - Balogh Tomas 1:0
Alterman Boris - Dovzik Juri 1/2
Yudasin Leonid - Sergeev Veniamin 1/2
Oratovsky Michael - Horvath Mario 1:0
Tyomkin Dmitri - Balogh Peter 1:0
Finkel Alexander - Kolesar Milan 1:0

Day 2 (November, 24):
                  Agrouniverzal - Kalijschik 3.5-2.5
Beliavski Alexander - Volkov Sergey 1/2
Gelfand Boris - Voitsekhovsky Stanislav 1/2
Damljanovic Branko - Kochetkov German 1:0
Ilincic Zlatko - Kovalev Andrei 1:0
Drasko Milan - Korzubov Peter 1/2
Vukic Milan - Poley Vladimir 0:1
Day 3 (November, 25):
                  Agrouniverzal - Elitzur Petach 3:3
Beliavski Alexander - Smirin Ilia 0:1
Gelfand Boris - Alterman Boris 1/2
Damljanovic Branko - Yudasin Leonid 1/2
Ilincic Zlatko - Oratovsky Michael 1/2
Drasko Milan - Tyomkin Dimitri 1/2
Mikhalchishin Adrian - Finkel Alexander 1:0

In the final the favorites, Agrouniverzal had a 2576.66 average rating compared to that of 2525.83 for the Israeli team. Decisive was the win Smirin scored against Beliavsky on the top board. The match was lost with too many draws on the middle boards. There is still some chance for Agrouniversal to play in the final. If, as seems likely, the Dutch organisers can't hold the final, the Yugoslav team has offered to be the host. It looks like the ECCC is going through a big crisis. The best clubs have for a while lost interest in playing. The organisers have announced fines for teams who fill out applications, and then don't play to apparently little effect. The organisers need to find a new way of attracting the established teams or end the competition.

6) Dates for FIDE knockout

According to sources in Argentina the dates of the FIDE knockout appear to have been announced by Emmanuel Omuku as June 19 - July 17, 1999 in Las Vegas. [Although confirmation hasn't appear elsewhere yet. Sinisa Joksic still doubts this. ] Serious doubts have been raised about Karpov's participation by Omuku although at the recent Cap D'Agde event Karpov was talking about playing still.

7) 2nd OIBM in Bad Wiessee

The 2nd OIBM in Bad Wiessee is nearing its finish its one of the largest opens in Germany with 300 players including 20 GMs (Dreev, Khalifman, Ibragimov, Khenkin, Lutz, Sturua, Epishin, Glek, and Lobron are amongst the players) reports Thomas Leckner. 8) Kilkenny Congress.

The Kilkenny Chess Congress (Iona Technologies International Masters) took place in Ireland Nov 27th-29th. It finished in a three way tie between Stuart Conquest and Luke McShane of England and Bogdan Lalic of Croatia all of whom scored 5/6 (with the players in that order in terms of tie-breakers). Having said that Lalic only played four games after missing his initial flight, a half point bye was followed by a win by default against Rufino Bengoetxea who withdrew after one game. A note on the ratings of players: Yuri Rochev is given as having a rating of 2285 and Joanna Lagevsky one of 2045 but I can find neither in any recent rating list. My thanks to Herbert Scarry for the games, Jack Lowry for the results and to John Hurley and Jon Speelman for their help.

DutchBase

The DutchBase is an initiative to bring the Dutch chesslife on the Internet. In this Dutchbase you will not only find classics like the complete Hoogovens tournaments, IBM and Interpolis, but also lesser known tournaments that are not in the big databases yet. In the GAMES-section you will find more than 48.000 games from tournaments held in the Netherlands during the period 1850-1998. We choose definitely for quality in stead of quantity. The spelling is fully (where possible) consistent. In the HALL OF FAME you will first find the only Dutch worldchampion Max Euwe, the candidate Jan Timman, Jan Hein Donner and the talents Jeroen Piket and Loek van Wely. We will extend this collection very soon. The collection already is quite big but far from complete. We will do all to make it better and even more complete. You can help us with that job.
