1) Introduction

My thanks to Herman Van Riemsdijk, Michael Atkins, Laszlo Nagy, Jerry Bibuld, Christophe Bouton of Europe Echecs, John Saunders, Jean-Paul Touze, Clichy www site, John Henderson, Otto Rubingh, Sinisa Joksic, Vicente F. Herrasti, Leontxo García of El Pais, Bobby Ang, Chia Chee Seng, John Donaldson, Mark Kaprielian, Carlo Mazzoni and all those who helped with this issue.

Some good stuff this week with a number of GM events. The Christmas and early New Year period will bring more GM events too. My week was dominated by going to a lunch at which Kasparov was the main speaker. Certainly he seems less driven and more good tempered than I'd imagined and his own views were not delivered as explosively as in the past. He reacted with good humour to questioning in a way that in the past he may not have. His committment to chess (both over the board and its promotion, especially in education) and the promise of more writing has got to be good news.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

4) Kasparov in England

Garry Kasparov travelled to England where he gave . He will have a series of engagements including a simultanous exhibition against a number of juniors which will be at the Royal Society of Arts in London (December 17th) . Live internet coverage at: http://www.wireplay.co.uk/chess/

Kasparov firstly conducted a simultaneous exhibition over 24 boards at the Berkeley Hotel, Knightsbridge, in London on the evening of Wednesday 16th December in aid of the Kasharon School for special needs. Twenty-four teams of up to five players per corporate sponsored boards (£5,000 per table) took part in the event raising in excess of £75,000 for the Kasparov nominated children's charity. The game given is from a team from the newspaper "The Times" who were: Bernard McClory, David Unserofer, Andrew Graham, Clive Simcock and Robert Thomson.

On Thursday 17th he launched BT's new Internet-based games service on Wireplay, called "Play Games Now!". He faced three teams of four - from the media, Wireplay gamers and English Primary schools champions (Thomas Rendle, 12, Gawain Jones, 11, Murugan Thiruchelvam, 10 and David Howell, eight) - in an Internet-based simultaneous match.

On Friday 18th, he met a number of people from the British chess community (around 30) over lunch at Home House in Portman Square, London. The event was partially to announce the launch of Everyman Chess which is the new name of Cadogan Chess. Amongst those there were Bill Hartston, Leonard Barden, Danny King, Jon Speelman, Owen Williams, Malcolm Pein, Bill Colegrave, Fred Friedel, Graham Lee (who talked a little about the Kasparov scholar who he helps train at Oakham School), John Henderson, Ray Keene, and even myself!

Kasparov answered questions for well over an hour on many topics, but centered on his own plans for the future and the past, present and future of the World Championships. Kasparov talked about eliminating much of the non-chess related activities from his schedule to concentrate on chess more. He described the Kasparov Consultancy of a few years back as a waste of time, and expressed dissatisfaction on his ability to effect the complex politics of Russia. He aims to write more and already has three tournaments in his schedule. Wijk aan Zee and Linares early in 1999 and almost certainly Sarajevo starting on May 16th aswell as an Advance Chess challenge - which involves computers and humans playing a six-game consultation match - in Leon, Spain, in June. .

But it was both the historical legitimacy of his claim to be World Chess Champion and his need to play an absolutely credible challenger that took up the bulk of the discussions. He discussed at length his belief that the title of World Chess Champion has always belonged to the Champion, even after the war (where he stressed his belief that Botvinnik wrote his own conditions for defence that were accepted by FIDE) and talked about the FIDE Championships which were won pre-war by Euwe and Bogoljubow (and in the latter case used in making the case for a challenge to Alekhine). There was discussion of such inconvenient moments such as Karpov's acquisition of the title in 1975 after the title was removed from Fischer by a vote by FIDE (certainly the weakest moment in Kasparov's case for the unbroken continuity of the title). He certainly has an arguable point of view, but certainly not the only point of view. He pointed out that he has defended against Short (his legitimate challenger in 1993 although he now thinks the break with FIDE was a bad mistake) and against Anand in 1995. He also needs a defence soon and acknowledges that. Leonard Barden asked whether he would be open to a challenge from Anand and the potential for sponsors from India. Whilst Kasparov said he would more than welcome a challenge from Anand (in fact he said he invited it) and was certain such a match could be arranged for $2-3m possibly via Bessel Kok he ruled out playing in India where there might be "dangerous consequences [for him] if the match became a matter of national prestige." Kasparov believed that Anand did not want a match now, which indeed might be correct, Anand may believe that waiting is in his best interests.

He said that there had been an offer for the organisation of his match with Shirov but that Shirov had turned this down as being too low. He believes the market value of the match was considerably lower than one with Anand but seems still prepared to play Shirov. He added that if he did play Shirov he would probably still have to defend against World No 2 Anand or No 3 Kramnik sooner than normal anyhow. [A more complete version of what was said may become available as a recording was made of the lunch]

He certainly seemed in a good mood and took the questions well. When I spoke to him briefly at the end I asked him about the recent death of Geller. He said he was a great player and also revealed that in a brief conversation with him prior to his match against Short in 1993 he had said to Geller that he didn't really want to play against Short's Marshall Defence to the Ruy Lopez. Geller suggested that 8. a4 with the plan of Nbd2-f1 as being very strong, and although Kasparov worked out the details, it was Geller's suggestion that made it happen.

Prior to his visit to England he was in Argentina where Garry Kasparov gave a 20 board simul in Buenos Aires on December 13, 1998. Diego Flores the vice-champion u-16 in Wch-junior which took place in Oropesa del Mar drew his game against Kasparov.

11) News from Sinisa Joksic

Belgrade will host the 14th European Club Championship, January 11-13, 1999. Yugoslav vice champion CC "Agrounverzal" from Zemun (a suburb of Belgrade) provides the venue for the seven qualifiers. Agrouniverzal finished second in Group 7 after a 3:3 draw with Israeli side "Elitzar Petach". (Smirin won against Beliavsky on the top board). This will be third final for Agrouniverzal. In 1995 in the 11th European Team Championships they were 8th, and last year were forced to miss the final on account of the cost. This year the financial situation looks like much better, particularly because the hosts should be paid full board for 8 players, from each team, in a good hotel, then money for the prize fund, playing hall and arbiters. The championships will be held in the hotel "Jugoslavija" on river Danube, where the participants will stay.

List of participants:

Group 1 "Saint Petersburg" Russia (Svidler, Salov, Khalifman, Sakaev, Episin, Sergei Ivanov, Aseev etc);
Group 2 CC "Beer Sheva" Israel (Huzman, Golod, Avrukh, Alon Greenfeld, Victor Mikhalievski, Mark Tseitlin, Aleksander Mikhalievski etc);
Group 3 CC "Panfox" Breda Holland (Van Wely, Timman, Adams, Lautier, Mikhail Gurevic, Vaganian, Hodgson, Van der Wiel etc);
Group 4 KSz "Stilon" Gorzov Poland (Krasenkov, Shipov, Dautov, Khenkin, Markovski, Jaracz etc);
Group 5 PKO BP "Polonia" Warsaw Poland (Shirov, Oll, Rosentalis, Gdanski etc)
Group 6 CC "Bosnia" Sarajevo BIH (Ivan Sokolov, Lputian, Kozul, Kurajica, Piket, Dizdarevic, Kelecevic etc);
Group 7 "Elitzur Petach" Tikva Israel (Yermolinsky, Smirin, Alterman, Yudasin, Sutovskij etc);
Hosts CC "Agrouniverzal" Zemun Yugoslavia (Anand, Kramnik, Beliavsky, Gelfand, Ilincic, Damljanovic, Drasko, Mikhalchishin etc)

If all eligible players participate it will be a really great event. Last years winner SC "Ladia Megregiongaz" Azov of Russia does not exist any more, so they can't defend title.

European Team Championships scheduled in the FIDE calendar for the end of July will be postponed until October according to Boris Kutin (SLO) the new European president. The reason is FIDE's plan to organize their Championships in Las Vegas, from June 19, to July 17. England had to withdraw as organizers during last FIDE Congress after complaints about the amount of subsidy for each competing team. Georgia, Armenia, Russia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic and Germany have all expressed interest in hosting the European Championship declared Kutin to the Yugoslav media.

12) Rentero recovers conciousness

After 23 days in intensive care, chess organiser Luis Rentero regained conciousness after his serious traffic accident at the end of last month. His son said "My father finally came out of his coma on Tuesday and recognized my mother, although he did not remember of why he is in Hospital" he added "it is not clear whether he has any lasting brain damage, but the doctors are optimistic [about his recovery]". [Report by Leontxo García in El Pais December 17th at: http://www.elpais.es/p/d/19981217/deportes/leontxo.htm ] In addition it reports on the Linares 1999 [Feb 20-March 12] event where Anand and Kasparov have confirmed their participation, along with Kramnik, Ivanchuk, Svidler, Adams and Topalov. The eighth player will either be Shirov or his replacement Leko. Shirov is in dispute with Rentero (something he may not be in a position to deal with for some time) over the 28 million pesetas he won by defeating Kramnik. The money was to be paid after the match against Kasparov but Rentero is no longer a part of organising this match.

13) ZONE 3.2a (Southeast Asia)

The Southeast Asian Zonal (zone 3.2) took place in Yangon, Myanmar (thanks to Bobby Ang I now know that these are the new names for Rangoon, Burma) December 9-17, 1998 reports Bobby Ang and Chia Chee Seng (who also sent the games). The event was at first a nine-round Swiss Open event. This finished in a four way tie between, Utut Adianto, Rogelio Antonio Jr, Dashzeveg Sharavdorj and Liu Dede. Antonio almost didn't make it as he and Eugenio Torre were informed only four days before the event that they would both be allowed to participate, with insufficient time to raise funds for both to play Torre turned over the money he raised for himself to Antonio to allow at least one to go (full story by Bobby Ang at: http://www.philchess.com.ph/98zon.htm). At least his trip was successful as he won the double round four player elimination contest to be the first to go through. Adianto and Sharavdorj played off for the final place (5 mins + 10 sec/move) and Adianto qualified.

14) Mechanics' Masters

The 1998 Mechanics’ Masters, held December 11-13 in downtown San Francisco, featured many upsets. International Masters Mladen Vucic and Walter Shipman were joined in the winner’s circle by National Masterss David Preuss and Agnis Kaugars. A point back of the winner’s 4-1 scores were top-seeds IM Rashid Ziatdinov (2525 FIDE) and Omar Cartagena (2435). 17-year-old Preuss of Berkeley had a breakthrough event including a flashy win over 69-year-old IM Shipman featuring sacrifices galore.

The Mechanics’ Institute Chess Club is organizing GM and IM norm events on a regular basis and invites inquiries from interested parties, particularly non-US players rated over 2300. Contact John Donaldson (imwjd@aol.com).
