1) Introduction

My thanks to Dave Flynn, John Saunders, Stewart Reuben, Leontxo Garcia, Jesus Mena, Sergei Movsesian, Carlo Mazzoni, Hans-Dieter Müller, Eirik Gullaksen, Sinisa Joksic, Daði Örn Jónsson, Kenny Chern, Michael Atkins, and all those who helped with this issue.

A Happy and Prosperous New Year to everybody. 1999 starts with the main events being the regular Hastings, Pamplona and Reggio events starring. I've followed Alexander Morozevich since he won the last Lloyds Bank tournament with a record score a few years ago. He had a fantastic 1998 with an 8/9 score in an all-play-all and the Russian Championships. In Pamplona he has started with 6/7, so he may be one to watch in '99 too.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

8) 6th AMBASSADOR OPEN - BERN

 Sinisa Joksic reports:

Petr Velicka a 32 year old IM from Czech Republic won the Christmas open, which was played for the sixth time in Bern's 4 star Hotel Ambassador. Velicka had only a half point better Bucholz, "chess tie-break", than Russian grandmaster Yuri Razuvaev (54). In the last round, they played each other in the decisive game of the event, it finished in a quick draw. Both of them beat last years winner Bologan. The Czech player was the number 6 seed for the event. Velicka and Razuvaev, along with another nine players finished undefeated. The Tournament had 144 participants (a new record!), 6 grandmasters and 13 IMs. Besides 10 cash and 10 trophy prizes were the special prizes. The best Swiss player was IM Hansjuerg Kaenel (who finish 6th), the lady's prize was won by Veronika Werner (who finished 10th!) from Karlsruhe, Germany, the best senior was fm Hans Karl (SUI-finished 14th), the best junior Rico Zenklusen (SUI- finished 23rd) and the best schoolboy Sascha Jost (SUI-finish-50th). Lots of nice, interesting things, happened during the tournament. Amongst the participants were both organizers of Biel, the old, Hans Suri and the new, Peter Burri. Suri had half a point more, what was expected according to experience. Suri has organized 30 and Burri only one festival. This years 32nd Biel Festival is on the SWISS TOUR.

9) HILTON OPEN - BASEL

Sinisa Joksic reports: The Swiss Chess Tour has started with the Hilton open. A long time ago Basel organised few chess events, except for a few simultaneous exhibitions by Karpov. A strange situation for Basel with its great chess tradition. Nearby Alschwill was several times champion of Switzerland, during the time of Werner Hafner their famous president and owner of club. 116 participants played in the First New Year Open in the luxury Hilton Hotel. It takes place January 1-5 and is a seven round, Swiss system event. There are 38 titled players, 14 GMs, 17 IMs and 7 FIDE masters. After 4 rounds there is an unbelievable throng of players at the top, like in a bicylce race. There will be much to be decided in the three last rounds. Tukmakov came as the winner of Zurich Christmas tournament. Andrei Sokolov, can surprise and there are many experienced open players such as Cvitan, Gallagher, Bologan. The Ambassador's winners Velicka and Razuvaev have dropped points, and have drawn against each other.

13) Eastern Open

Michael Atkins reports: 198 players came to chilly Washington DC this past weekend to compete in the Eastern Open. In an unusual, almost grandmasterless field, the only Grandmaster, Alex Ivanov, took clear first with a 7-1 score. He drew with runner up IM Larry Kaufman and NM Dmitry Schndeider. Schneider had a couple of impressive long endgame draws with the two highest rated players, Ivanov and IM Adrian Negulescu of Roumania and had a 2580 performance. One has to feel a little sorry for FM Nelson Castaneda as he was in clear first with 4-0 and managed only a draw in his last four games.

The winners were:

Open - 1st - GM Alex Ivanov 7-1
        2nd - IM Larry Kaufman 6.5
3rd - IMs Adrian Negulescu, Calvin Blocker, + Osman Palos and FM
Emory Tate - 5.5
   Top U 2400 - Dmitry Schneider - 6
   Top U 2300 - Stanis Kriventsov - 5.5
   Top U 2200 - Carl Boor - 4.5

Under 2200 - 1st = Vladimir Grechikhin 6.5
Under 1900 - 1st = Ruixin Yang 6.5
Under 1600 - 1st - Thomas Sifter 6.5
Under 1300 - ist - Denis Suprun 8-0

He additionally reports that the 1999 New York Open was cancelled due to problems with the hotel and unavailability of other venues in Manhattan. Really a shame for one of, if not THE strongest open tournament in the world to not happen next year. Future details available at http://w-w-w.com/nyopen/

15) Review of the Year

A review of the key results and events of 1998.

January
--------

The year started with the conclusion of the FIDE Championships. Karpov
eventually beating Viswanathan Anand in a tense speed chess playoff
where Anand wrecked an extremely good position in game one after winning
the last game of normal timerate games. Over the year its clear that
no-one takes Karpov's victory and the FIDE title very seriously as the
advantages of being seeded to the final were so great.
Karpov did use the title to get the FIDE Championships which should now be just
finishing postponed until 1999, something that has done little for his reputation
amongst other players.

February
--------

February 22nd saw the start of the strongest tournament of the year, Linares.
The event was a 7 player double round all-play-all, the organisers wanted to
keep the event as Category 21 after they failed to get Karpov to play. FIDE
announced they were going for gamescore copyright, by the time they had
reached the end of the year this had become so watered down as to be unenforcable
and we will no doubt not hear anymore of this.

Viswanathan Anand won the Linares tournament by half a point from Alexei
Shirov who led until his loss to Svidler in the penultimate round. He was
still second ahead of Kramnik and Kasparov in third. Off the board Kasparov
wanted a match between Anand and Kramnik to decide who should play him in
a World Championship match. Anand refused to take part, claiming a contractual
obligation to FIDE and by virtue of his second place Shirov became the player
to take on Kramnik.

Evgeniy Solozhenkin won the St Petersburg Championships, and Hamdouchi the Dos
Hermanas Open, Michael Adams demolished Scottish player Jonathan Rowson
5-1 in a match in a quiet month for chess,

May
---

May was far more interesting, starting with Kasparov 4-0 win against Topalov
in a 25 minutes per side blitz match. Madrid, May 11th - 22nd and the extremely
strong Presidents Cup, in Elista (a replacement for the Russian Championships
which eventually took place later in the year) with its $100,000 in prizemoney got
underway. The start was marred by a serious road accident which led to fears
for Chiburdanidze's life. In the end she had a miraculous escape (although still
badly hurt in the accident) and she made a relatively speedy recovery later in the year.
Ivanchuk beat Khalifman in the final (Bareev was 3rd and Dreev 4th).
Loek Van Wely and Jan Timman drew a ten game match which brought the top two Dutch
players together. Van Wely won the speed playoffs.

Anand won the Category 17 Madrid tournament.

At the same time the Shirov-Kramnik match got underway. Huebner, Morovic
and Zilberman shared first in the Category 12 Capablanca Memorial. Kasparov
played a clock simul against the Israeli National Team winning 3-1 on May 19th
and 4-0 on May 21st.

June
----

Shirov beat Kramnik in their eliminator to play Garry Kasparov. The match
was organised by the World Chess Council, the main financing to be organised
by Luis Rentero (who later in the year had a very serious car accident). It
became clear to the players that the finance was not in place and Kramnik was
not paid in full for losing the match and Shirov was paid at all after the
financing of the match with Kasparov fell through. Kasparov claims that
Shirov later turned down a match for less money than originally planned and the
Shirov-Kasparov match is now in limbo. Nevertheless the 5.5-3.5 victory for Shirov
was a great result for him in a very tense match.

Kasparov defeated Topalov in an Advanced Chess Match in Leon (June 9-13).
This concept, one of Kasparov's, of a combination of computer and human
chess caused a lot of interest but the standard of the games didn't really
live up to the hype, the event will run again with Kasparov playing Anand
this year. Its not a concept I have any affection for.

At the same time Judit Polgar won a rapidplay match against Anatoly Karpov
in Budapest 5-3.

The only top event I attended this year was the Frankfurt Chess Classic
which was held in the Stadthalle Frankfurt-Zeilsheim June 17th - 21st 1998.
The event was extremely strong and split into two halves of rapidplay chess.
The first a double round all-play-all saw Kasparov miss out on a chance to
win the event by coming third in this first stage.

In the final Anand defeated Kramnik after a blitz playoff game
and Kasparov won the first and drew the rest of his exciting
match with Ivanchuk. The event is a casualty of the moving of
the FIDE knockout to June (almost certainly) and the open
may be the only event to run this year.

The Sigeman Chess Tournament ran June 9th - 17th. Ex-World Champion Boris
Spassky made a rare tournament appearance. The event was won jointly by

many draws Kramnik and Adams won three without loss. The event was a break
