1) Introduction

My thanks to Lost Boys, Duif Calvin, Laszlo Nagy, Lubomir Ftacnik, Robert Spörri, Elie Houlichian, Harald Grafenhofer, Jakub Fuksik of Agentura 64, Olaf Teschke, Sinisa Joksic, Tim Hanke, Ole and Carlos Penin, and all those who helped with this issue.

The FIDE Championships finals are to be contested between Vladimir Akopian and Alexander Khalifman. As these were not by any means the favourites for the event. This has provoked continued controversy about the format of the event.

Firstly Akopian has won three World Junior titles and ten or more years ago Khalifman looked as though he might become one of the strongest players in the World. These are not totally random finalists. I don't like the format but without the strongest player in the World, Garry Kasparov any Championships in any format were severely damaged. In a way, in changing the format, and starting a completely new series a line can be drawn. Wouldn't it be worse to have a World Champion (even a top ten one) under the old system where the best player was active but missing? Kasparov could return making possible a more serious championships, I would not expect him to (indeed I have more sympathy now with this position now than I did at the time). But faced with the situation as it is why not have a completely different test?

Secondly this is the format championed by FIDE President Kirsan Iljumzhinov. No-one can complain about this now. In 1996 Iljumzhinov was opposed by almost the entire Federations from Europe, who went to a FIDE Olympiad in Armenia, mandated to vote against him and then proceded to vote for him. My own Federation the BCF was one of those that did this. If the general feeling is that the format and running of FIDE is wrong then look to your own Federations. After that Presidential election (and the preceding one in Moscow) and seeing what it takes to win, I doubt there is a serious candidate even prepared to stand. So if you don't like the format, or the source of funding who do you turn to? You'd have to be a complete idiot to waste the time even trying to stand at the moment. Kasparov at the time of his split from FIDE in 1993 proposed the idea that World Chess Championships should not be funded by individuals, countries or towns but survive on a commercial basis. Its a vision he's had, at best, patchy success at realising, and now he has looked to others to organise events around his World Title seperating himself from the fundraising business (which is right, INTEL were upset with him playing an IBM machine a point which should never have come into consideration, and wouldn't have if Kasparov hadn't been part of the organising PCA, being player and organiser is an invidious position). It is proving very difficult, perhaps the prizefunds demanded are not commercially sustainable? He's had great success in promoting himself and the numerous exhibition events he's undertaken in recent years, why so much difficulty over the serious business of defending his title in a match? I believe Kasparov has the best claim on the historical World Chess Championship title, or perhaps it is to say he was the last right now its hard to say. But there is no doubt there are problems maintaining the active status of the Championships he lays claim to. That is not to say the FIDE Championships are any better. They are funded by Iljumzhinov, there is no sign of external sponsorship, or signs that general media interest is at all high. If he choses (or otherwise) not to fund the Championships they will almost certainly die, that is individual sponsorship. I hope that Sergei Grimaux and Bessel Kok find finance for the Anand-Kasparov match. Anand has been paid guarantees so he has not lost out much or at all, but we're denied a match we'd like to see.

The chess in Las Vegas has been patchy. Kasparov observed in his comments how poor (at a high level) the openings of Nisipeanu's have been, yet somehow he seemed to do quite well. Why didn't the classier players not prevail? To quote Kasparov from his round 6 summary "I think it is quite sad to see the willingness of the chess crowd to ignore the accomplishments of strong players who are representing the colors of our game after one tournament set in the very extreme conditions." and "Chess Elite is not a close club at any rate. I'm appalled to hear poisoned questions like, how may one join the privileged circuit? There is a simple answer - play like Kramnik in 92-93, Topalov in 93-95, Svidler in 94-96, Morozevich in 98 and all doors will be wide opened! Both finalists in Las Vegas are not young rising stars like 17-year old Boris Bekker winning his first Wimbledon. Khalifman and Akopian were hanging around for quite a while and had their chances to establish the prominent position in the world of chess and to conquer their places under sun. They have not succeeded. It will not serve the interest of chess at all to continue mud-throwing on the best world players who happened to collapse under tremendous psychological pressure in Las-Vegas simply because to much was at stake for them. To be a favorite with all eyes on you and not to slip on the narrow path to the final victory that what makes the difference between great players and the world champions."

To a great extent I even agree with him, but with one strong proviso, which actually involves Kasparov himself. The fact is Kasparov is one of the most psychologically strong players himself. I'm a bit surprised he is sympathetic. He's survived pressures far greater than were present in Las Vegas including his first World title match where he was distroyed by Karpov (and facing political pressures off the board) for a long part of this match in 1994-5 yet hung on to avoid losing it. Or again in 1996 where he lost three in a row, or in 1997 where he was one down with one to play yet retained his title. I know many who believe that even if players catch or even overtake Kasparov in native ability the mental competitive toughness of his creative peers do not match his competitive toughness. In a traditional cycle they would lose three years by going out (and indeed you can see the breaking of careers in the old Candidates series) here they as likely as not get to do it all again next year.

There was a collective failure in Las Vegas of the classier players to use their superior skills to their fullest extent surely? Some accidents sure, but everyone? The old Interzonal/Candidates series tested this, but such an environment has been almost entirely lacking recently. I see plenty of good chess these days, but precious little opportunity for players to show how hard they are competitively. The SuperGM events don't appear to create the kind of competitive strain and mix of opponents that produce hardened competitors. In fact it seems that opens, where round 9 is about going home with little or with a lot is a far better preparation for the FIDE format. This is surely not right, the best players should be both the toughest and the most skillful. You wouldn't think twice about inviting Ivanchuk to a SuperGM event, but you wouldn't have put any money on him in Vegas, or indeed in a classical World Championships series. It seems that although its hard to join the elite, its not as hard to stay there perhaps? Not to mention that outside the top ten your country of origin is pretty important too (there weren't too many people queuing up to invite Morozevich until he got his big ELO even though it had been obvious for almost a year he was back). Bareev is another player who by falling just a few places lost almost all his invites.

Finally many of the strongest players actually thought the championships were actually pretty fair (perhaps reflecting how difficult things are getting in the big wide world). I would like to see a Interzonal/Candidates system that fully tests a challenger and which importantly prepares them for a match against a player such as Kasparov but perhaps support for this isn't as great amongst the top as you might expect. Anyhow as far as I'm aware this is not on the table. Where is the will to set up and fund this? As it is we'll have to make do with an event that is actually taking place and gives players an even break. I'd love to have seen a Kramnik-Shirov final but they didn't do it, so lets give credit to the finalists for getting there.

Note that last week I initially left out the FIDE Championships round 4, I have put rounds 4-5 in again.

Oh, and having just finished the issue, I guess TWIC 250 is another milestone!

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) FIDE World Chess Championships

The FIDE World Chess Championships opened on July 30th and run until August 29th 1999 in Las Vegas USA.

The FIDE Championships have reached the final it is between Alexander Khalifman and Vladimir Akopian. Khalifman won a very close match against the surprise package Nisipeanu after a playoff. Adams who blundered in a winning position against Akopian in game one never looked like getting it back and lost game three to go out.

Game one of the final started with a quiet opening but Akopian, probably showing nerves lost a piece with insufficient compensation. Khalifman wrapped things up effectively.

FIDE Round 6 Results

The semi-finals consisted of a four game match followed by a tie-break if necessary. The pairings were Akopian-Adams and Khalifman-Nisipeanu. Michael Adams was even money favourite for the event before round 6 started but confessed to feeling tired after his win against Kramnik.

SEMI-FINALS DAYS 1+2

Vladimir Akopian put himself in charge of his match against Michael Adams by provoking and then surviving a promising piece sacrifice from Adams and going on to win as black. Adams' sacrifice seemed to be taking him to victory but the position was pretty difficult to realise. 30. Bxe6 may have been a mistake (30. Rad1 is one possible suggestion), after 30. ...Qe7 it appears that Adams is losing a bishop by force.

Although there are four games in the semi-finals a win "against serve" with black puts Akopian in a very strong position. Liviu Nisipeanu held Alexander Khalifman with black, however in time-trouble missed 38. Ra1 which seems to win on the spot.

On day two of round 6 there were two short draws (Akopian-Adams 16 moves [Adams said "I made the offer in a slightly worse position. I felt that I had little to gain by playing on. If I took any risks and lost today, it would be all over." and Nisipeanu-Khalifman 28 moves).

DAY 3

Vladimir Akopian went through to the finals of the FIDE Chess Championships. He defeated Michael Adams after the Englishman tried a do or die approach and lost with white in game three of their match. Akopian refused a draw and finished the match after only three games winning2.5-0.5. Akopian seemed likely to be joined by Alexander Khalifman who got a very big edge in space and development and used it to finally inflict defeat on the young Romanian Nisipeanu.

ROUND 6 DAY 4

Nisipeanu levelled his match against Khalifman after winning a long ending against the Russian. Khalifman looked to have a position that should have been relatively easy to hold but he drifted into a lost position.

ROUND 6 PLAYOFFS

Alexander Khalifman finally saw off the challenge of the surprise package LD Nisipeanu in the playoffs for the World Championships semi-finals. Khalifman won the first game of their playoffs but then was much worse in the second game, Nisipeanu couldn't find a way through to win though. Khalifman qualified to play Akopian for the FIDE title starting on Sunday.

3) Women's World Chess Championships

Xie Jun regained her FIDE World Championship title by defeating Alisa Galliamova in a match July 30th to August 23rd. The first half of the match took place in Kazan, Tartarstan and finished in a 4-4 tie. The second half in Shenyang, China started on August 15th with a win for Xie Jun with black in game 9, game 10 was drawn. Xie Jun seemed to be almost home after winning game 11 but Galliamova struck back in game 12. Game 13 was drawn before a wild game saw Galliamova go two down with two to play. A final draw saw Xie Jun home. Galliamova was ELO favourite in this match but the scrappy play suited Xie Jun. This match was originally meant to be the Candidates final but when Galliamova was unhappy with the match only been in China Xie Jun won by default. A similar situation applied to the championship match against Zsuzsa Polgar where long negotiation and a supposed September date for the FIDE knockout championships where the title was up for grabs (along with Polgar's pregnancy) led to FIDE defaulting the World Champion. Xie Jun then had to play the highest placed player in the cycle which was Galliamova. This time sponsorship for a two part championships was found and the match went ahead. Xie Jun is FIDE's recognised champion, whether FIDE might feel that a match with Polgar, if finance is available and now that time is available, would be fair is open to question. It has certainly been extremely unsatisfactory.

11) French Chess Championships

The first stages of the French Chess Championships have almost been completed. The championships started Wednesday 18th August in Besancon (near the Swiss border). 1015 players are competing in 7 tournaments (closed men's, closed women's, a FIDE open, open A+B+C, veterans).

The main men's event is divided into 2 groups of 8 players in a round robin. The first 2 in each of the groups (A and B) go through to a 2 game semi-final. Group A resolved itself neatly with Darko Anic on David Marciano scoring 6 and 5 points respectively. Joel Lautier was defeated by Marciano and was eliminted on 4.5 points. Group B is more complicated. Christian Bauer won the B group with 5.5/7 including a final round victory against Etienne Bacrot. This has put Bacrot into a tie break match (resolved by rapid-play) with Laurent Fressinet to see who goes through to the two game semi-finals. The final is played over 2 games whilst the others continue to play for prizes, Elo + places.

13) Ftacnik on the Presov festival

Lubomir Ftacnik reports: on Presov 1999.

The fourth biggest town in Slovakia Presov (some 100.000 inhabitants) saw the "zero" chess festival with GM round robin cat.10 and open event of IM level. In a chess starved country with distinct economical problems the organisational efforts of the local players represented the first success even before the first move was played. The playing venue was a nice theatre hall in the main square. The second round was started intentionally early to allow for a simul show on a platform in front of the theatre with the clear intention of coming closer to the life of the city itself. GMs Stohl and Ftacnik played an alternative simul against some tough opposition of 16 (14:2 with two losses). The female stars played mini simuls: GM Hagarova won 5:1, IM Pokorna Regina 5:0 and IM Bekiarisova 5:0. On top of everything GM Stocek played a blindfold game on a great board 4x4 metres and had to give draw just before the start of an opening banquet. The GM group saw the fight of the local best players with Chernyshov, who was happy to clinch his GM norm. Presov's best player Manik was only a draw short of emulating this success. Two grandmasters played a very special event, one of the most gifted young Czech players Stocek struggled in every game only to become the draw king of the tournament and Ftacnik had a last minute wake up with 3 wins in final rounds. The open should grow in the future from a moderate start of 126 players. Slovak players had every reason to rejoice in the end with Pcola winning on tie break and Hagarova and Pokorna mixing with the best at the top of the crosstable.
