1) Introduction

My thanks to Kristianus Liem, Michael Atkins, CanalWeb, Yvette Nagel, Lanfranco Bombelli, Mladen Zelic, Anton Gubanov (Ruschess.com), Ivan Gluckman, Ruben Casafus, Pierre Bourget, Bernd Rosen, Dima Tyomkin, BCM, John Henderson, Ülar Lauk, Laszlo Nagy, Hassan Khaled, C. Abundo and V. Ravikumar, Rupert Jones and all those who helped with this issue.

The Japfa Classic in Indonesia ended on Tuesday with a victory for Judit Polgar. Another result confirming Polgar as by far the strongest woman player in history. Sad news from the States with the death of Arthur Dake. The Dutch Championships have started and the participation of the computer program Fritz is certainly garnering some publicity for the event, with reports in the newspapers and on the radio in the UK today. Faced with a similar situation I have long resolved to refuse to play the machines (in 1989 a computer participated in the Major Open, in the end I wasn't paired with it). After all I can't I play a computer anytime on my own machine? It might be different in professional chess certainly the participants in the Dutch Championships seem to have markedly mixed views.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) Japfa Classic

The Japfa Classic International Chess Tournament 2000 was the strongest ever in Indonesia. The Category 16 event took place in the Bali Beach Hotel. It ran 22nd April to 2nd May 2000. The total prize money was US$56,500. After there is an open tournament (May 3-May 11, 2000) with total prize money of US$20,000. My thanks to Kristianus Liem for his help.

Judit Polgar won the Japfa Classic alone half a point clear of Anatoly Karpov and Alexander Khalifman. Polgar defeated Gilberto Milos in the final round with the black pieces. Alexander Khalifman pressed Anatoly Karpov but the former World Chess Champion held out for a draw. Jaan Ehlvest lost his last three games including a game against Zaw win Lay who thus managed to tie for last place with Ruben Gunawan.

The previous strongest chess event in Asia was the double round robin Marlboro-Loyola Challenge in 1976 in Manila, Philippines, with the Karpov 2695, Ljubojevic 2620, Browne 2585 and Torre 2505. Torre went on to win that event with 4,5 point from 6 rounds.

Following the event the Japfa Classic International Open takes place in the Grand Bali Beach Hotel, Sanur - Denpasar May 3rd - 11th, 2000. Organized by Bali Jeff Chess Centre, Denpasar Incorporated with PT Japfa Comfeed Indonesia Tbk. The event is a 9 Round Swiss event with a $20,000 prize fund.

5) Broekhuis Dutch Chess Championships

The Broekhuis Dutch Chess Championships take place in Rotterdam May 7th-19th 2000 (free days May 11th and May 16th). The event is controversial due to the participation of Fritz SSS. Paul Van der Sterren has already said he won't play the computer and will be defaulted in that round. Those agreeing to play the computer will benefit from an increased prizefund. In round 1 Piket had a hard time eventually drawing in 49 moves. In round 2 Manuel Bosboom resigned after 4 moves. "After just playing three moves the IM offered the current Dutch computer champion a draw. Operator Frans Morsch declined instantly and played Fritz' fourth move. Bosboom thought for a little while and then resigned. Bosboom said after the game: "This is a Personal Championship, computers don't belong here. I think the situation is ugly but it isn't my problem. The Royal Dutch Chess Federation (KNSB) is responsible for the circumstances that have been created. The extra money I make by playing a few moves is not the main cause. I think it is more hurtful that other people were overturned to participate in the championship by the extra money." The organisers attempts to get publicity for the event through the computer's participation seem to have worked however. Radio 5 Live a British news and sports station interview Yvette Nagel on Monday afternoon about the computer's participation.

6) VI Leonardo Di Bona

The VI Leonardo Di Bona tournament took place in Cutro, Italy April 27th-May 7th 2000. The top event was a 12 player Category IX event won by Genadij Timoscenko with 7.5 half a point clear of Yuri Razuvaev. Pietro Pegorari scored an IM norm. He is one of the organisers of the event and there has been much discussion in Italy about the easy ride he had against many of the top players in the event. My thanks to Lanfranco Bombelli.

14) Arthur William Dake (1910-2000)

Arthur William Dake was born in Portland, Oregan April 8th 1910 and died in Reno, Nevada April 28th 2000. Dake was the last living member of the great US Chess Olympiad teams that won the title consecutively in Prague 1931 (board 3 +5 -2 =7), Folkestone 1933 (board 4 +9 -2 =2) and Warsaw 1935 where he had the best score in the entire Olympiad (board 4 +13 -0 =5). Dake was of Polish extraction and on the return journey from this last Olympiad appearance he met 26 year old Helen Gerwatowski who was returning to America after a visit to Poland, they were married 6 weeks later and remained together until her death on April 1st 1994.

Dake learned chess quite late. At 16, he was a merchant seaman visiting places China and Russia and developed the physical toughness required. He was an energetic man, with a few rough edges but seemed to be genuinely liked by those who met him. (John Donaldson who met him during Dake's second chess career in the 1970s described him as "one of the most friendly and positive people I've ever met. " Dake didn't learn chess until 1927 when he received instruction in the game at the Portland YMCA. He quickly established his reputation firstly in Portland and then in New York as a speed chess expert. He arrived in New York in 1929 just in time for the Wall Street Crash. By the following year he became champion of the Marshall Chess Club. He was a professional chess player at a time of poverty. He hustled for a quarter a game on Coney Island, he played rapidplay and blitz chess events for money and coached but like most of the US's depression era players, made hardly any money. By the late 1930s even the more successful US players such as Fine and Reshevsky had decided that full time work was better than a professional chess career. George Treysman, a player of possibly even greater natural talent than Dake, hustled at chess for his entire life, and lived in penuary.

Its hard to say how good he was although there is a story of him beating Alekhine over an evening when they played a 25 cents a game in the Manhatten Chess Club. Fine, Kashdan, Treysmann, Denker, Kupchik and others were tough opponents in to play against in New York's strong chess scene, its fair to say he must have been pretty good. Dake beat World Champion Alexander Alekhine in tournament play (Pasedina 1932) but his outstanding results were for the USA in the Olympiads and it was for those he was awarded the IM title in 1954 and had this upgraded to the GM title in 1986.

Once married in 1935 he crossed the US on simultaneous tours and the following year taught chess in Milwaukees schools as part of a program promoted by Arpad ELO. In 1937 they had a daughter, Marjorie and obviously he needed a steady income. His last major appearance was in the 1938 US Chess Championships where a tie for 6th place finished this early part of his career. He did play some chess after this. He played two draws against Lilienthal in 1946 in the Russia vs USA match in Moscow. In 1952 he came 4th= in the Hollywood tournament won by Svetosar Gligoric. He filled in for Denker in one round of the USA-USSR match in New York 1954, losing to David Bronstein.

He returned more regularly to chess after his retirement as supervisor at Oregon's Department of motor vehicals. In 1973 he entered the Lone Pine tournament and had reasonable results in this event 1974 and 1976.

90 year old Dake spent his last night playing blackjack in the Sands Regency Casino in Reno Nevada. He died of natural causes.
