1) Introduction

My thanks to Laszlo Nagy, Jussi Tella, Eirik Gullaksen, Alexis Harakis, John Henderson, Herman Claudius van Riemsdijk, Benny Asman, Andra Cimina, Axel Fritz, Jakub Fuksik, Bing Sun, Pierre Bourget, Dimitris Skyrianoglou, Antonio Bento, Frank Berry, John Hillery, Alexis Murillo, Hassan Khaled and Elie Houlchian and all those who helped with this issue.

Vladimir Kramnik had an impressive performance in the WDR live TV game this week to take with him to his match against Kasparov in London in October in what will surely be positively his last appearance before then. August 17th sees the first round of the Rubinstein Memorial tournament with an impressive field which should produce interesting chess. Julian Hodgson's victory in the British Chess Championships, the Lost Boys Amsterdam Open and the announcement of the field for FIDE's World Cup tournament in China are other big stories this week.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) WDR TV match

Vladimir Kramnik beat Peter Leko in the WDR TV Match in Koeln, Germany. Kramnik had white but had to beat Leko to play in next years event which he did in only 32 moves of this annual g/60 live TV rapidplay game. Kramnik won the event in 1996, when he drew with black against Anand, he beat Judit Polgar in 1997, and Michael Adams in 1998. There wasn't an event last year (the first year without such an event since it started in 1983), it may have been squeezed out of the calendar due to the FIDE Championships.

Kramnik, Vladimir - Leko, Peter 1-0 32 B47 Sicilian Defence (Paulsen Variation)

3) British Chess Championships

The British Chess Championships took place Monday 31st July to Saturday 12th August 2000 at Millfield School, Somerset. ELO favourite Julian Hodgson recovered from a 0.5/2 start to win the event by half a point from Chris Ward who was in clear second place. Jon Speelman, Mark Hebden, Murray Chandler and Danny Gormally were a further half point further back. The performance of the event was perhaps that of 13 year old Humpy Koneru who won the women's event with a score of 6.5/11.

A small correction from last week, although Commonwealth players have been traditionally allowed to compete in the event (and this was the case this year) this was not the commonwealth championships which have already taken place.

TWIC had live games, daily reports and photos from John Henderson all at: http://www.chesscenter.com/british2000.html. My thanks to Alexis Harakis and John Henderson.

13) Continental Open

John Hillery reports: Ilya Smirin won the Continental Open, held July 24-30 in Los Angeles, California. The tournament guaranteed $100,000 in prizemoney, making it the most lucrative on the West Coast. Attendance, which topped 500 players in 1997, barely exceeded 400 this year. Bill Goichberg's Continental Chess Assn. lost an estimated $20,000. Smirin, Shabalov, Atalik, Ehlvest, Yermolinsky and others competed in the abbreviated three-day schedule, which began with five 45-minute games on July 28. When the schedules merged on July 29, only Eduard Gufeld, at 4.5-0.5, was close to Smirin's 5-0 score. Three draws and a last-round win over Maurice Ashley clinched the $10,000 first prize for Smirin. There were 11 GMs and 7 IMs in the 53-player Open section. My thanks to Frank Berry also.

14) Subzonal Tournament 2.3.2

Alexis Murillo reports: Subzonal Tournament 2.3.2 (Central America: Guatemala, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, Belize and Panama) was played in Guatemala City, Guatemala, 14th-24th July. IM Hector Leyva (El Salvador) won the tournament, however not without problems. After winning the four first games in a row, he then drew against IM Alexis Murillo (Costa Rica) and then lost against IM Leonardo Valdes (Costa Rica) and Carlos Juarez (Guatemala) before winning his last two games.

The last round was a tragedy for myself (Alexis Murillo) as I lost for the first time in the event to Izaba of Nicaragua and with it the chance to qualify for the Zonal in Venezuela. IM Bernal Gonzalez (Costa Rica) won his place in the Zonal Tournament by defeating Carlos Juarez and Leonardo Valdes in the tie break. There were no new International Master Titles for anyone, as it was a very close fight for first place between the six International Masters who participated. Each game was played very hard, and you can find no easy draws to criticise. The organization, by Guatemala's Chess Federation, was superb.

19) Finnish Team Blitz Championships

Jussi Tella reports: The Finnish team championship tournament in blitz chess was played 12-13.8.2000 in Helsinki. The tournament is one of the biggest blitz chess festivals in the whole world, gathering players also from abroad. The tournament was played first time in 1963, and this year there were more than 200 teams participating.

Top Results This year there were some records in the results: first time teams of same chess club took the best two places in the final, and first time a chess club had five teams in the final.

20) Arnold J. Eikrem Memorial

The Arnold J. Eikrem Memorial took place in Gausdal, Norway 30th July - 6th August 2000. The event was won by Sergei Tiviakov with 7.5/9.

There are a couple of corrections to the table and the games from last week. The 12 move game Svendsen-Porrasmaa was initially given as a draw (corrected later in the week) instead it was a drastic win for black and in the game Yakovich - Lobzhanidze a move repetition was left out. My thanks to Eirik Gullaksen.
