1) Introduction

My thanks to Adrian Roldan, Yvette Nagel Seirawan, Rod McShane, Michael Franett, Andrzej Filipowicz, Gaguik Oganessian, Alexei Shirov, Biro Sandor, Nigel Johnson and John Saunders, Miklos Orso and Laszlo Nagy and Milen Petrov, Damir Medak and all those who helped with this issue.

The Najdorf Chess Festival saw Judit Polgar add yet another tournament win to a marvelous career record. Whilst you can have an interesting discussion about the greatest chess player in history, no such discussion is possible about women's chess, there simply hasn't been a women's player even close to her achievements in the whole history of chess.

On Sunday October 8th 2000 Garry Kasparov plays Vladimir Kramnik for the Braingames World Chess Championships in his first defence since 1995. Garry Kasparov starts as strong favourite to win the match but the expectation is that this will be a competitive match. TWIC has a mini-site devoted to the match with on the spot reports, photos and annotations at: http://www.chesscenter.com/wcc2000. You can read my prematch article there. These matches can be some of the toughest sporting contests with numerous twists and turns as the players give their all. We haven't had a truly dramatic match for many years, lets hope for one this time, chess needs it.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

4) European Club Cup

The XVI European Club Cup took place in Bosnia September 24th-30th 2000. The event was a seven round Swiss System team event rather than a knockout as in previous years. The winners were the team of Bosna Sarajevo (Evgeny Bareev, Kiril Georgiev, Sergei Movsesian, Ivan Sokolov, Zdenko Kozul and Suat Atalik) who drew just one of their seven matches, against second placed Sankt Petersburg (Alexander Khalifman, Peter Svidler, Victor Korchnoi, Konstantin Sakaev, Vadim Zvjaginsev and Sergei Volkov). Sankt Petersburg drew three matches in finishing in clear second. SV Ordina Breda of the Netherlands (Loek Van Wely, Michael Adams, Jan Timman, Mikhail Gurevich, Vladislav Tkachiev and Rafael Vaganian) finished in 3rd place drawing four matches. They had better board scores than 4th placed Merkur Graz (Beliavsky, Chernin, Kindermann etc) of Austria and Danko Donbass (Ponomariov, Onischuk etc) of the Ukraine. Other strong players in the event included Vassily Ivanchuk who played for GSM Warsaw, Ulf Andersson of Rockaden Stockholm, Azmaiparashvili and Predrag Nikolic of Kiseljak Herzeg, Dreev and Filippov of Siberia Tomsk.

5) World Junior Championships

The World Junior Championships took place in Yerevan, Armenia, September 18th- October 2nd 2000.

There was an exciting struggle for the World Junior Championships over the final rounds. The winner Lazaro Bruzon of Cuba beat close challengers Ehsan Ghaem Maghami, Krishnan Sasikiran and Peter Acs in rounds 10-12 in key struggles on the way to the title, in fact he was already sure of being champion before the final round. His score of 10/13 was a point and a half clear of the rest of the field. In second place on tie-break was Kamil Miton of Poland who was just ahead of Karen Asrian of Armenia in third. These two players as well as Alik Gershon, Dragan Solak, Amon Simutowe, Dimitrij Bunzmann and Vladimir Malakhov all scored 8.5/13. There were GM norms for Kamil Miton and Dragan Solak and IM norms for Ehsan Ghaem Maghami, Pentala Harikrishna, Spas Kozhuharov, Surya Shekhar Ganguly and Martin Senff.

Medals Juniors

Gold Bruzon, Lazaro g CUB 2534 10.0/13
Silver Miton, Kamil m POL 2443 8.5/13
Bronze Asrian, Karen g ARM 2566 8.5/13

In the Girls event Xu Yuanyuan of China was a comfortable winner. She started with 7/7 before losing to Lela Javakhishvili in round 8 but this was a temporary setback as she went on to win by two points from Olga Zamina of Russia who in turn was half a point clear of Wang Yu of China who took third place on tie-break from Elisabeth Paehtz of Germany. Xu Yuanyuan was awarded a WGM according to the regulations. Wang Yu, Olga Zamina, Cristina Calotescu, Anastasia Sorokina, Darja Kaps, Anna Ushenina (this 15 year old is unrated), Narine Gasparian and Lilit Galojan all got WIM norms.

Final Standings Girls

Gold 1. Xu Yuanyuan wf CHN 2396 11.0/13
Silver 2. Zimina, Olga wf RUS 2263 9.0/13
Bronze 3. Wang Yu wf CHN 2401 8.0/13

My thanks to Gaguik Oganessian for his help during the championships.

6) More on the Olympic Village Chess Exhibition

The FIDE Olympic Exhibition took place September 24th in the Olympic Village in Sydney. There were two rapidplay games contested between Alexei Shirov and Viswanathan Anand and attended by FIDE President Kirsan Iljumzhinov and FIDE officials such as David Jarrett, Emmanuel Omuku, Florencio Campomanes, Pawlina and Sedenova.

Alexei Shirov has written to me about the problems he had travelling to take part as I didn't get the story right last week. His journey started in Madrid where he found upon arrival at the airport his flight was overbooked. This meant that rather than taking his planned direct flight he had to take an indirect root Madrid-London and then the later flight London-Sydney arriving at his hotel five hours before the match was supposed to start. His problems didn't end there. After being woken in time to get to the exhibition he found that the taxi driver first of all didn't know the way and was even starting to run out of petrol by the time he arrived at the village. When he arrived he was requested to start straight away. Even with all these problems he was very happy with the way he played and both games were drawn. He believes that through this exhibition chess has made an important step towards becoming an Olympic event.
