1) Introduction

My thanks to Laszlo Nagy, Miklos Orso, Sinisa Joksic Carl Fredrik Johansson, Calle Erlandsson, Junior Tay, Leonard Barden, Adolivio Capece, Axel Fritz and Juergen Daniel, John Saunders, Arthur Brameld and all those who helped with this issue.

What are you doing Christmas Day? Alexei Shirov and Viswanathan Anand (barring a complete disaster for one of the players) will be playing the fifth game of their final in Tehran. Its very difficult final to predict the outcome I just hope for some good chess with not too many blunders or long lines of Ruy Lopez theory. Festive greetings to everyone.

Hope you enjoy this issue

2) FIDE World Chess Championships

The FIDE World Chess Championships take place in New Delhi, India and Tehran, Iran, 25 November - 27 December 2000.

The FIDE Women's Championships were retained by Xie Jun. Whilst neither Polgar sister played in the championships there is absolutely no doubt this was an extremely impressive performance by Xie Jun. She was never in trouble and progressed in most rounds easily.

The FIDE World Chess Championships Finals take place in Tehran, December 20th-26th 2000 between Alexei Shirov and Viswanathan Anand. This is after two semi-finals that followed two quite different courses.

Viswanathan Anand beat Michael Adams fairly comfortably in the semi from the top half of the draw, he drew game one with black followed it with a fine positional win in game two and then after one or two scares in game three drew the match out to win 2.5-1.5. Shirov had a much tougher road.

He was playing the rapidly improving 17 year old Alexander Grischuk and it could be said the youngster almost had the better of the match. He did fail to find his way through at two vital moments and these cost him the match. Shirov started the match in confident style with a crushing win in the first game of the match. However in game two he blundered horribly and suddenly there was a real prospect of the youngster reaching the final. Game three was key, it was a tremendous struggle with Shirov setting up a great position but with Grischuk finding a series of great tactics to keep himself in the game. Then on move 44 within sight of a draw missed a tactical point and Shirov won. The final game was even more hair-raising with Grischuk having an apparantly won position before Shirov found an amazing resource with 29. ...Nb2, if Grischuk had taken it he may well have won (but with tremendous complications, we'll see what the players say about this game) as it was his 30. Bxf7+ missed the point of Shirov's combination and the game was drawn by perpetual check a few moves later.

A brief word on Alexander Grischuk. He's probably been the biggist winner in these championships. I believe he's ready for the big time and organisers of major events should invite him.

The final between Anand and Shirov see's in my opinion the two strongest players in the event reach the final. I would place Anand as slight favourite but Shirov has proved he's a battler and his recent record (negative but unbeaten in standard chess in two years against Anand and Shirov has the more recent win) means that he won't be at all afraid of Anand. Anand has played tremendously with white in the standard time-rate games if Shirov can blunt this then anything can happen. Either would be a worthy champion.

On the subject of who is the real World Champion I would like to make a couple of points. Salov conducted some very odd (certainly in Western eyes) interviews during the championships on the FIDE site (some of which were "censored" and appear in full on his own site) http://ajedrez_democratico.tripod.com/. The main point that I can answer is that journalists have promoted the interests of Kasparov in covering the Braingames Championship as a World Championship when they should have been talking of only one champion, the FIDE Champion.

I don't believe it is journalists that are doing this. They are merely reflecting the view of the players and the spectators. Firstly the Braingames Championships were extremely popular and generated a huge amount of interest. The FIDE Championships hasn't got anything like the reaction. Secondly look at the challengers for the FIDE (and indeed previous Kasparov held championships). Their opinions are extremely divided (just read some of the interviews on the official FIDE site) as to which is the most important title to win (many pragmatically say either which is presumably why Salov aided Shirov in trying to challenge Kasparov), making it very hard to find a middle line.

It is certainly true that the fact that Kramnik was preferred to Shirov as challenger to Kasparov did a lot of damage to the Braingames title that Kramnik now holds. I also believe that the FIDE title looked a lot more credible with Khalifman as champion than it did with Karpov in his second reign. Khalifman defended it like a champion too being extremely unlucky to be eliminated in the Anand. Either Anand or Shirov are surely also going to make fine champions. At the moment it is the holder that makes the championship as much as the other way round.

There are two clouds on the horizon, one for each version. Although FIDE plan to simplify the championships and have a final of eight they are also considering, bizarrely in my view, moving to a much faster time-limit, so they can play two games in a day. A high quality final involving eight finalists over one month taking place each year I would have thought would have improved the chances of FIDE eventually winning the war of words over the title Kramnik holds. On the other side Kasparov wishes to have a rematch with Kramnik without having to qualify. That Braingames chose Kramnik over Shirov (who had qualified) damaged the title, if Kasparov doesn't have to fight through a meaningful test against legitimate challengers this time then its credibility is pretty close to zero. Especially as we have absolutely no idea what damage Kasparov's loss to Kramnik has done to his chess.

In the end I believe it is the players who have to sort out this mess. Meanwhile us poor journalists will have to continue covering the chess and trying vainly to find a middle way.

14) Bundesliga

The Bundesliga round 3 and 4 took place December 9th-10th 2000. With players such as Khalifman and Adams still involved in the FIDE Championships there were a number of key players missing. The battle of the leading clubs Porz and Solingen ended in a draw. In a contraversial move USV Magdeburg and SV Werder Bremen played their fifth round match on the Friday night however they argued that taking the opportunity to play the match early whilst both teams were in the same town would save them a lot of money in travel. My thanks to Axel Fritz and Juergen Daniel for their help. There will almost certainly be corrections to at least some of the games but many corrections have already been made.

There now the games from the Bundesliga round 3 and 4 weekend involvling Wattenscheid, Mainz, Castrup Rauxel and Baiertal. Also corrections to three games from Plauen and the missing Thiede-Meier game.
