On Friday 9th February the "Radisson SAS Challenge Match" was played in Bergen (Norway) between GM Alexei Shirov and the leading Norwegian player GM Simen Agdestein. The match consisted of 4 rapid games with 15 minutes per player per game. The match was sponsored by the City of Bergen and Radisson SAS. Saturday 10th February Shirov gave a simul.
Eirik Gullaksen reports:
The games:
Agdestein sacrificed two pawn in the first game to gain two powerful bishops against two knights. It looked like Shirov should be able to defend, but time trouble took its toll and the bishops were victorious.
The Norwegian played well in the second game as well, sacrificing a pawn to gain a promising position. Shirov responded by returning an exchange and saving the draw due to his powerfull passed pawn.
In the third game Shirov struck back. He sacrificed a pawn on the queenside and then threw his pieces at the white king. Agdestein got short of time and was unable to defend. It was over in 30 moves, when mate was inevitable.
In the last game Shirov got a promising attack but didn't get more for his efforts than an endgame that should be drawn with correct play. Agdestein was short of time however, and blundered his rook while his last seconds were ticking away.
The simul
Saturday 10th February Shirov gave a simul against 24 local players. He won 21 games, beating among others IM Roy Fyllingen (2389), IM Ivar Bern (2375) and Per Manne (2386). Shirov lost against IM Eirik T. Gullaksen (2333) and Daniel Hersvik (2189) and drew against Arne Hagesæther (2187). 12 games from the simul are included.

Once a year the well-known computer chess expert, Prof. Enrique Irazoqui of Spain, runs a giant tournament with the strongest programs in the world.
This year the participants in the Cadaqués Tournament 2001 were Deep Fritz, Gambit Tiger, Gandalf 4.32g, Junior 6a, Nimzo 7.32 and Shredder 5.
This year the programs were playing on a dual Pentium-III 933 MHz with 768 MB of RAM. Time controls are 40 moves in 40 minutes. Each participant played 20 game matches against all other participants, for a total of 300 games. Experts consider it the "Linares tournament" of computer chess. The winner is regarded the strongest currently available chess program in the world.
The result came down to the final match between Gambit Tiger and Deep Fritz. Fritz took that match 11-9 and with it the tournament. My thanks to Enrique Irazoqui for the games.

Some additional information to the report last week. On 31 Dec,2000 FIDE World Women's Champion Xie Jun beat Nigel Short in a four game 25 minute rapid game match 2.5-1.5. This event was during the Chinese Chess New Century Festival in Tian Yuan, Shanxi province. This is the home town of Ye Jiangchuan.
Nigel Short adds: that he played white in games 1 and 3 (contrary to the impression I had earlier MC) his rapid chess match against Xie Jun in Taiyuan, the Capital of the Shangxi Province. The first game was drawn (Spanish), Short won the second (Italian Game), but lost the third (Scotch) and the fourth (French). Although he credits the Women's World Champion for playing much better chess than him, he adds that in mitigation perhaps a couple of the games, in particular, were not played under anything like normal tournament conditions, as it was deafeningly noisy. He doesn't have the gamescores for the match. The festival itself was very impressive. He and his family went and were treated very warmly and with great hospitality by the sponsors, the governers and , last but not least, the Chinese Chess Association.
If anyone has the Short-Xie Jun games I'd be interested.

A transcript of Khalifman's ICC question and answer session is available. He talks at length on how he believes the FIDE Championships are the only one but isn't a craven FIDE loyalist. For instance he is not a supporter of the new FIDE time rate. He talks of the current big three (Kasparov, Kramnik and Anand) and how he feels he probably belongs in the next grouping of around 10 players (I agree). His objection to FIDE ratings. Why he isn't disappointed at being ignored by Corus (Why doesn't Khalifman get more invites? It puzzles me even in broken English he's a better ambassador for the game than many and he's playing well.) and how he believes Anand will not have sufficient recovery time to put in his best performance in Wijk aan Zee.

He is now involved in two new websites. http://www.gmsquare.com The idea is to provide a place on the Web to those GMs who would like to have some presence on the Internet and currently there are sites of three GMs there - Alexander Baburin himself, Alexander Morozevich and Lev Psakhis. Secondly at: http://www.chesstoday.net there will be a commercial chess service, providing daily news, interviews and instruction to a wide range of players.
