The book begins with over 100 positions suitable for novices, and ends with 100 extremely tough puzzles, which will provide a mind bending challenge even for top-class players. 1) Introduction

My thanks to Mikhail Golubev, Michael Atkins, Mogens Nielsen, John Fernandez, Pahlevanzadeh, David McAlister, Willi Knebel, Steffen Pedersen, Ali Nihat, Gustavo Albarrán, Zoltan Mucsi, Michael Rahal, Pam Thomas, Axel Fritz, Radu Chirila, Sinisa Joksic, Kristianus Liem, Christian Sánchez, Herman van Riemsdijk, Aydin Saray and all those who helped with this issue.

Plenty of interesting material this week. The FIDE rating list is now released four times a year. I received a copy of the top 100 almost a week ago and today the full list has been release (with a slight change with Linares included) and it sees Kramnik become the second man over 2800, Anand is only six points shy of this mark aswell. Kramnik and Kasparov look set to meet in a special tournament in Kazakhstan in May. There is lots more chess besides this week including the interesting Dos Hermanas Internet tournament.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) Kazakhstan SuperGM

A new Classical Chess tournament looks all set to take place in May to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the independence of Kazakhstan. World number one Garry Kasparov has been invited as has the reigning Braingames World Champion Vladimir Kramnik. England number one Michael Adams was invited but declined, Morozevich (not Topalov as first reported) will play instead. Boris Gelfand and Alexey Shirov along with Kazakhstan's top player; Darmen Sadvakhasov completes the line-up. I don't have 100% confirmation of this news yet.

3) April FIDE List

The new top 100 FIDE Rating list has been released for April 2001. This is an official list, formally these appeared in January and July, now they appear additionally in April and October.

Stats, Kasparov is number one but Kramnik is now within 25 points and the second man ever over 2800, their Braingames match has been rated here, Anand is only six points shy of this barrier at 2794 in third, there is a huge gap to Michael Adams in fourth rated 2750. New in the list are Macieja, Motylev, Sturua, Palac. Rating falls include those of Kasparov, Van Wely, Gulko, Najer, Avrukh, Rozentalis and Shabalov. Out of the top 100 are Speelman, Korneev, Psakhis, Baburin, Shariyazdanov and Markowski. Top 100 and ties total 101 players (in January this was 103). 455 events rated after the Linares event was added after I received the initial list last week, you can download the full list from FIDE's site. Karpov's rating has been corrected he said recently one of his poor results was rated twice in the last list.

Seek further info including the full list at FIDE's Internet site: http://www.fide.com/

19) Hastings Congress Raises Profile

On Monday 26th March, Michael Foster, MP for Hastings and Rye, generously hosted a reception in the Jubilee Room at the House of Commons to raise the profile of the world famous Hastings International Chess Congress. The Congress is urgently seeking a commercial sponsor or sponsors. Over the past few years the event has been funded by Hastings Borough Council - since losing the Falaise Hall as a venue it has been difficult to attract a commercial sponsor. The Congress now has a new home at the impressive and recently opened Horntye Park Sports Centre and hopes this will help to change its fortunes. Yesterdays’s event wqs attended by business and marketing company representatives and members of the press. The organisers were also particularly pleased to welcome the Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport, Chris Smith who said that he recognised the importance of the Hastings Chess Congress and hoped that sponsorship would soon be found. He also had praise for the town of Hastings. Michael Foster MP, and Chess Congress Chairman Paul Smith both welcomed the guests and the Borough Council was represented by Mike Marsh, Director of Community & Lesure Services, Kevin Boorman, Marketing Manager and Cllr Trevor Webb. Graeme Mounsey Chairman of Horntye Park and their Marketing Manager Roger Dennett also attended. Wines were provided by local Carr Taylor Vineyards. There has been an on-going parliamentary debate for some years about the status of chess and one of its supporters, MP Tam Dalyell also attended the reception. Grandmaster Raymond Keene, Chess Correspondent of the Times gave talk about the Hastings Congress in which most of the great names in chess have played over the years. He emphasised that it is still the most famous chess event in the world being a key part of the historic, cultural and intellectual heritage of this country and as such, it is imperative that its future be assured. The event December/January event attracts around 600 players from home and overseas. They range from world-class grandmasters to amateur club players. Moving with the times, games are relayed on the internet. The congress web-site http://hastingschess.org.uk gives all information about the history, games and running of the event. Khalifman Transcript

A transcript of Khalifman's ICC question and answer session is available. He talks at length on how he believes the FIDE Championships are the only one but isn't a craven FIDE loyalist. For instance he is not a supporter of the new FIDE time rate. He talks of the current big three (Kasparov, Kramnik and Anand) and how he feels he probably belongs in the next grouping of around 10 players (I agree). His objection to FIDE ratings. Why he isn't disappointed at being ignored by Corus (Why doesn't Khalifman get more invites? It puzzles me even in broken English he's a better ambassador for the game than many and he's playing well.) and how he believes Anand will not have sufficient recovery time to put in his best performance in Wijk aan Zee.
