Chess Tiger 14.0

Christoph Théron's ChessTigerhas gained enormously in strength over the past few years as its impressive victories in several international tournaments have demonstrated. In autumn of 1999, ChessTiger entered the ranking list of chess programs (SSDF) and immediately topped the list. Apart from ChessTiger 14.0, the CD also contains GambitTiger 2.0. GambitTiger is a particularly aggressive version of ChessTiger which mercilessly attacks the king. Thats why GambitTiger often chooses moves other programs would never play. Recently GambitTiger showed its claws in the Linares of chess programs" and came second behind DeepFritz. In contrast to their direct predecessors, ChessTiger 14.0 and GambitTiger also take advantage of the endgame databases (tablebases) and support multi-variation mode.

The Chigorin Defence by Martin Breutigam At master level, the Chigorin Defence has seldom been played and probably thats why it has been less analysed than other openings - good prerequisites for freethinkers and adventurers on the chess board!“ (Breutigam) The Chigorin Defence resulting after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nc6 has become popular again thanks to Alexander Morozevich who with has been holding his own even against the best. FIDE master Martin Breutigam includes a small but swell database with 100 entries - 7 texts and 93 sample Another database includes 54 training questions enabling the user to test his freshly acquired knowledge. Furthermore, the CD features a big database of more than 4.000 games as a reference database plus a big tree of all games. System requirements: Pentium, Windows 95,98,2000,Me RRP: £17.95 / $27

Main Line Caro-Kann Neil McDonald Everyman $21.95/£14.99 The Caro Kann has always been one of the most widely played openings among club and tournament players. Highly-regarded author Grandmaster Neil McDonald offers a comprehensive survey of the state of opening theory for both White and Black players, explaining the basic elements, strategies and tactics for both sides

New In Chess Yearbook 58 New In Chess $22.50/£15 Opening preparation is not the first thing that comes to mind when the name of Brain Game World Champion Vladimir Kramnik is brought up. However, with the right ingredients in hand he is more than capable of producing some spicy opening dishes. Have a taste from Kramnik's Kitchen. CHEF DE CUISINE Thanks to Vladimir Kramnik an old line against the Gruenfeld Indian has come back into fashion.

Offbeat Spanish Glenn Flear Everyman $21.95/£14.99 Deciding what to do against the Spanish (Ruy Lopez) is a perennial problem for those who play too passively and end up having to face what is known as the 'Spanish Torture'. In this book Grandmaster Glenn Flear studies a wide variety of ambitious and offbeat answers catering for many different playing styles. From the super-solid Berlin (as used so successfully by Vladimir Kramnik in his Brain Games World Championship victory against Garry Kasparov) to the uncompromising Schliemann, there is enough choice here for any prospective black player facing the Spanish

1) Introduction

My thanks to Richard Palliser, Olivier Breisacher, Adolivio Capece, Argiris Kotsis, Chris Duncan, Laszlo Nagy, Péter Tomcsányi, Adrie Pancras, Mikhail Golubev, Jack Peters, Jerome  Bibuld, Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh, Manuel Glave, Dr. Hesham Elgendy, Nigel Freeman, Rodolfo Arias, Hugh Brodie and all those who helped with this issue.

Kramnik's win in Dortmund from Topalov on tie-break was the big story for both of them. Anand's last place was probably at least as big a story. In the past he has managed to cope with lack of form but this time he was punished continually throughout the event. Anand has bounced back from bad form before (although in strict results terms this is his worst result in a decade) but the fortunes of the FIDE and Braingames Champions are sure to be seized on in some quarters. Just as Dortmund finished a category 16 event started in Biel and saw the apparently indescructable Victor Korchnoi (a man with his fair share of career highs and lows) beat Boris Gelfand in the first round. Should be interesting!

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) Dortmund 2001

The "Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting 2001" took place July 12th-22nd 2001. Vladimir Kramnik and Veselin Topalov finished on 6.5/10, in shock last place was Viswanathan Anand on 3. Kramnik took first place by virtue of a better tie-break score than Topalov thus retaining the title he won last year. The big winner of the event was Topalov who produced his best result since Madrid 1997 or even Novgorod 1996. Viswanathan Anand finished second on tie-break to Dortmund in this event last year but this time he finished clear last with 3/10 losing both his games to Topalov and one to Morozevich and Kramnik. He has had tournaments where he has seemed out of form before but this time he was punished for his poor play. He will bounce back. Anand and second last Adams both lost rating points, the other four players all gained.

4) Smith & Williamson Young Masters

The Smith & Williamson Young Masters takes place at the King Edward's School Witley (Surrey) 13th-21st July 2001. The Masters itself sees a repeat of last year's format of a 22-player 9 round IM Swiss. My thanks to Richard Palliser for the games and results.

Thus a very close event saw Gergely Antal storm through to take outright first with five straight wins after a slow start of 1/3. Sadly no players made IM norms after Vigus failed to finish off Bromann when needing a win.

Kasparov has spoken about Kramnik, the Internet and FIDE. Patras is the venue for the European Juniors and the 3rd International Open which takes place alongside. The event runs 15th-27th July 2001. I will round up both these events on their conclusion next week.

14) Swiss Championships

The Swiss Championships took place in Scuol 12th-20th July 2001. There were players of other nationalities who play for Swiss Clubs competing also but they weren't eligible to win the Swiss title. Roland Ekstroem won the whole event as well as the Swiss Championships, the latter after a playoff with Florian Jenni. They played just one tie-break 15 minute game as when Ekstroem won the first game this gave him the title as in the event of a 1-1 tie he had better Buchholz score and would have been champion in any event. In the women's event which was a 10 player all-play-all Elena Sedina won with 8/9 with Jana Ramseier taking the Swiss Championships with 6/9. My thanks to Mikhail Golubev for the news.

16) Southern Californian Championships

The Southern Californian Championships took place on two weekends 14th-21st July 2001.

Jack Peters reports: The 13th annual Southern California Championship was held on the weekends of July 14-15 and July 21-22 in Los Angeles. This year's tournament was the strongest yet, thanks to the arrival of three IMs from Armenia. The youngest of them, 17-year old Varuzhan Akobian, led the tournament entering the final round, but had to settle for a share of second place after losing to defending co-champion Cyrus Lakdawala. First prize went to Levon Altounian, who won a crucial last-round game against Andranik Matikozyan. Altounian, also a former state champion, was the only player to go undefeated. The Southern California Chess Federation (SCCF) will recognize Altounian as the 2001 state champion of the chess "state" of Southern California. Because of changes in U.S. Chess Federation policies about distributing money to state associations, the SCCF had no money available to hold the tournament. However, SCCF president Chris Roberts led a successful fund-raising drive that raised more than $4,000. That amount covered all of the expenses of the 2001 tournament and created a surplus that will assure another tournament in 2002.

The tournament brings up an interesting point about the FIDE rating list. It seems its practically impossible to get a name changed in the list. Two of the players Andranik Matikozyan (his preferred spelling) is called "Matikozian" by FIDE and Jack Peters is still listed as John A. Peters, a name he hasn't used in more than 20 years. I use the list to get consistancy of spelling but even I'm beginning to think that FIDE's spelling of Te Llalemand (Lallemand is almost consistantly used when her name comes up) may be a typo. On the good news front FIDE have finally started spelling Garry Kasparov correctly after years of Gary (the change came in April 2001). Kasparov has consistantly spelled his first name Garry for years.

17) Wilbert Paige Memorial

The Wilbert Paige Memorial International Chess Tournament takes place in Harlem, New York 14th-23rd July 2001. It is a FIDE Cat.IV tournament. It is not only the first international chess tournament ever held in Harlem, but also the strongest tournament in history in which every player either has been born in Africa or is of relatively recent African descent. Hugh Brodie reports: The 2001 Quebec Closed ("Championnat invitation du Quebec") was won (for the 8th time!) by GM Alexandre Lesiege of Montreal, who beat Marat Khassanov 3.5-0.5 in the four-game final in Montreal. For the second year in a row, it was a knockout event. The 1/8 final was a 5-round Swiss held in Shawinigan - about an hour away from Montreal. Participants were winners from previous qualifying events, and the top two advanced to the quarter-finals. Subsequent rounds (matches) were held in Montreal. Many of Quebec's strongest players decided not to play this year, for various reasons.
