1) Introduction

My thanks to Frank-Juergen Greger, Junior Tay, Laszlo Nagy, Eric Birmingham, Sinisa Drazic, John Fernandez, Andres Bacsi, David Cohen, Ian Rogers, Andy McFarland, Leonxto Garcia, Vladimir Dvorkovich, Jan van Reek, Villem Lüüs, Aard Daanen, Igor-Alexander Nataf, Andrey Belous and all those who helped with this issue.

News of interesting strong events this year dominates the news this week. Bobby Fischer's foul mouthed appearance on Icelandic TV confirmed one thing. He does not intend to play normal chess again and that he hasn't been playing on the internet. I believe him (it has been his consistant position for a long time) so lets not hear any more stories that he has.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

3) Linares 2002

The next major event in the calendar is the Linares 2002. This will be a seven player double round robin with Garry Kasparov, Viswanathan Anand, Michael Adams, Vassily Ivanchuk, Alexei Shirov, Francisco Vallejo Pons. It seems Ruslan Ponomariov has turned down the invitation in spite of indicating he would play just before Christmas (according to the organisers). Ponomariov has until today (Monday) to change his mind. Otherwise, Linares will go to court for compensation reports Leonxto Garcia of El Pais. The organisers are trying to contact Vladimir Kramnik who has not yet replied. If Ponomariov or Kramnik do not play the event it will take place with 6 players. It will take place 22nd February - 10th March 2002. On the spot photo reports from John Henderson.

In another story by Leonxto Garcia in El Pais (Monday 4th Feb) it is reported that Shirov, Gelfand and Ivanchuk will play in the Dortmund qualifier to decide who will play Kramnik in the championships now run by the Einstein Group. Michael Adams, Veselin Topalov, Peter Leko and Alexander Morozevich. The organisers still hope to persuade Kasparov to play. No announcements will be made by the organisers until March about the event.

4) FIDE World Chess Grand Prix

FIDE have announced their World Chess Grand Prix. They will be rapid tournaments (although not title a "Rapid Chess Grand Prix") with a time control of 25 minutes for each player to complete the game plus 10 additional seconds for each move. FIDE have named the qualifiers based on a points system. Its not clear when the first event will be. It was provisionally Madrid but I certainly know of no event starting today. I look for confirmed dates and events. The events will be knock-outs with two game matches.

FIDE give the following provisional dates on their website: 4th - 18th February 2002 Madrid 8th - 22nd March 2002 Dubai 1st - 15th April 2002 Bombay 7th - 21st May 2002 Amsterdam 2nd - 16th June 2002 London (2002 only, from 2003 Moscow) 2nd - 16th July 2002 Berlin 16th - 30th August 2002 New York 2nd - 16th September 2002 Seattle 21st September - 5th October 2002 Rio de Janeiro (or Buenos-Aires)

Post Script: Robert Huntington believes the current event dates are: April 6-13 Abu Dhabi, May 10-17 Moscow, July 10-17 Bangalore, August 2-9 Dubrovnik and September 10-17 Rio de Janeiro.

5) Cat 18 in Cannes

6) Bobby Fischer Interview

Bobby Fischer gave an interview with an Icelandic TV Station. He chatted with former bodyguard from 1972 match Sæmundur Pálsson. There are two main points that interest me. Firstly is that he will only play FischerRandom Chess. "I don't play the old chess anymore". He denies he played Short (or indeed anyone else) on the Internet saying "He can say whatever he wants".

Its an uncomfortable listen. Ususal warning of extreme anti-Jewish and anti-American remarks and very bad language. One thing is clear in Fischer's universe nothing is ever his fault. If he didn't have his multiple conspiracy theories he might have to look at the way he has systematically trashed his own career, reputation and life.

7) Corus, Wijk aan Zee C

As reported last week the Corus tournament in Wijk aan Zee took place Jan 11th-27th 2002 with Evgeny Bareev scoring the finest result of his career to take clear first in the main event. One event I didn't report on was the Corus Tens event which was an invitatonal event which saw Ian Rogers and Andrei Istratescu finish on 6.5/9.

9) Indian Championships

The Indian Championships took place in Nagpur January 16th - Febuary 4th 2002. The huge Category VIII 20 player event had 5 GMs Sasikiran, Harikrishna, Barua, Kunte, Thipsay and 9 IMs competing. Women qualifiers WGM S Vijayalakshmi and IWM Swati Ghate compete for the first time. The championship was a battle between 21 year old Krishnan Sasikiran and 16 year old Pentala Harikrishna the two new stars of Indian Chess. The decisive blow occurred in the penultimate round when one of the joint leaders Harikrishna lost to R B Ramesh allowing Sasikiran to take a half point lead into the final round. Both players won in the final round so Sasikiran took the title.

19) Singapore Rapid

Junior Tay reports: This year's National Rapid Chess Championships saw 140 participants vieing for the title of National Rapid Chess Champion. The first day (2/2/02) saw GM Bong Villamayor, IM Enrique Paciencia, FM Mark Chan and FM Ong Chong Ghee lead the field with 4/4. The critical game turned out to be the FM Ong-Sadorra matchup in Round 3 where the London-based FM tricked the latter from a Queen Pawn opening (Barry Attack) into the so-called "150 Attack" in the Pirc. Sadorra's unfamilarity with its nuances (or more likely hacking possibilities) proved fatal for him. FM Ong later drew against GM Bong Villamayor, IM-Elect Chan Peng Kong and beat IM Enrique Paciencia to emerge the National Rapid Champion with 8/9. Sadorra won the rest of his games to finish 2nd on Solkoff tie-break (after winning the Cairnhill International Open last December).
