1) Introduction

My thanks to Laszlo Nagy, Vlad Barsi, Zenon Franco, Steve Laios, Lanfranco Bombelli, Argiris Kotsis, Eugeny Atarov, Olivier Deville, Mihajlo Savic, Argiris Kotsis, Coach, Vishal Sareen, Arthur Brameld, Hanon Russell and all those who helped with this issue.

From February 22nd we will see eleven of the top twelve players in the world in action (only Kramnik missing). Whilst Linares with Kasparov, Anand, Adams, Ivanchuk, Shirov, Ponomariov and Vallejo Pons may grab the headlines (Anand's return to SuperGM chess after his disaster in Dortmund in July and Ponomariov's debut) the NAO Chess Masters in Cannes may end up being more exciting with well known results producers Morozevich and Topalov playing (although it has to be admitted there are some well known draw artists playing too) as well as Evgeny Bareev in his first event since he won the Wijk aan Zee tournament. I'm looking forward to these tournaments a lot.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

6) Edmar Mednis 1937 - 2002

Hanon Russell of chesscafe.com reports that Edmar Mednis born Riga, Latvia March 22, 1937 has died in Queens, New York at the age of 64 on February 13th 2002 after a sudden attack of pneumonia. He was awarded the title of GM in 1980. Mednis's career high was beating Bobby Fischer in the US Championships of 1962 (although their overall record was +1 -5 =1 in serious games). He wrote several books on endings and "How to beat Bobby Fischer". He was inducted into the U.S. Chess Hall of Fame in 2000 and according to his entry there "Mednis was educated as a chemical engineer, has worked as stock market investor, but ultimately became a professional chess player".

Here is Mednis' famous win. He recalled it later: "I have been asked innumerable times how it felt to receive Fischer's handshake. Well, it sure felt great to defeat Fischer, but I must admit that I didn't get Bobby's handshake nor, for that matter, any other direct communication from him. What happened was the following: Next time we were together was for Round 4, and before the games for that round started, Fischer went up to the referee, Hans Kmoch, and told him that he was resigning. Mr. Kmoch then came over to me and informed me, "Mr. Fischer has resigned."

17) Aeroflot Open 2002 Correction

The Aeroflot Open 2002 took place in Moscow 4th-11th February 2002. Five players, Gregory Kaidanov, Alexander Grischuk, Aleksej Aleksandrov, Alexander Shabalov and Vadim Milov finished on 6.5/9. A number of the games were incomplete or had errors in them. I have a correction to Smirin-Markowski round one but important games such as Grischuk-Sargissian (7) and Aleksandrov-Potkin (7) are clearly incomplete. If anyone can send the full versions or other corrections I'd be grateful.
