1) Introduction

My thanks to Laszlo Nagy, Stewart Reuben, Javier Rubio, Mihajlo Savic, Jerry Bibuld, Aydin Saray, Ajedrez21, John Henderson, Leontxo Garcia, Michael Atkins and all those who helped with this issue.

The Linares tournament looks set for a tense second half with Kasparov leading on 4.5/7. His closest challenger is FIDE Champion Ruslan Ponomariov, they meet in the 13th round for the second time. A lot could happen before then with the players bunched between +2 (Kasparov) and only -1 (Adams, Ivanchuk and Vallejo Pons). This has been a quick dash through the events (some of them very interesting!) of the week as there has been much to do with the Linares coverage also.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Linares 2002

Linares is a seven player double round robin with Garry Kasparov, Viswanathan Anand, Michael Adams, Vassily Ivanchuk, Alexei Shirov, Francisco Vallejo Pons and FIDE Champion Ruslan Ponomariov. It takes place 22nd February - 10th March 2002. There are on the spot photo reports for TWIC from John Henderson. Garry Kasparov leads after 9 rounds with 4.5/7 and he'll probably be a little disappointed have missed opportunities for at least another point. Michael Adams looked likely to be his challenger but is now at the bottom of the field after losing to Kasparov, Ivanchuk and in the last round Ponomariov. Ponomariov lies in joint first place in the table with Kasparov although having played a game more this is misleading. Only slightly so, he has certainly aquitted himself well so far. The field is fairly bunched and almost anyone can still have a good (or indeed bad) result with a couple of wins (or losses). For the first time the Anibal Open takes place alongside the main event, it used to be held at a different time of year. It will run 1st-10th March. Sergey Krylov won the ONCE blind chess tournament with 7.5/9.

3) NAO Chess Masters

The NAO Chess Masters tournament took place 22nd February - 3rd March 2002. Veselin Topalov and Boris Gelfand finished on 6/9 a point and a half clear of the rest of the field. Anatoly Karpov led for much of the event before late losses to Topalov and Bacrot took him back to 50%. The event was an unmitigated disaster for last placed Alexander Morozevich. He lost five games and won only once.

5) Einstein Match and Press Conference 2002

Kramnik was in London on Friday March 1st 2002. In his match against David Howell he won the first three games before conceding a draw in the final game. Howell became the youngest player to avoid defeat against a reigning World Champion. The games were more in the style of a training match come exhibition and were played in a pretty relaxed atmousphere. Howell's draw in the final game was fully justified by the position. The main order of the day was the launch of the Einstein Group PLC. Where the CEO Steve Timmins spoke of their plans and especially of the TV coverage their satellite channel would have of the chess events. Abdul Wahab Assoomi confirmed that Bahrein were committed to the Man-Machine Match. Kramnik spoke of his commitment to "rebuild what was damaged in 1993" by the restoration of a Candidates tournament. He also talked about the role chess could play in school. Speaking to me after the main events were over Kramnik said that he felt that now he was champion he was in a position to try and produce a World Championship series as he would like to see it. He didn't think his views were that far away from Kasparov's and he was disappointed that Kasparov didn't want to play in Dortmund. He likened it to a team like Argentina missing the Football World Cup for some reason, a disappointment, but it not invalidating the event. He said he needed to play more but that events in the last few months had conspired against him. He said he felt he has a fairly full program over the next few months playing in the Amber tournament, the Prague knockout, Astana and the Leon Advanced chess tournament. He said he knew he needed to play more not least to keep his form. He seemed in a relaxed mood. He said he thought Ponomariov was definitely already a top 10 player but hadn't really looked at his games in detail.

6) Yasser Seirawan Proposals

Yasser Seirawan has produced a series of proposals to heal the split in the chess world by creating a new classical World Championship cycle while also recognizing World Champions for rapid/Knockout and blitz. His proposal would also create a new office of Chess Commissioners who would administer the new classical cycle.

He is trying to set up a meeting possibly in Prague in May involving leading players, FIDE and the Einstein Group PLC. Amongst other things he is calling for a letter writing campaign to FIDE's Emmanuel Omuku at fide@fide.ch urging FIDE to compromise at the negotiating table.

Whilst he faces formidable problems (Do FIDE or the Einstein Group even want to contemplate change? Are they even contractually able to? Can the disparate views of the leading players be reconciled) and I'm not convinced by a number of details of his proposals, a meeting especially amongst the players would be great. Indeed it is long overdue.

WGM Martha Fierro was .5 back at 6.5 Becerra defeated Francisco 2-0 and Chiong defeated Ivanov 2-0 to create a tie at 9-1. The Saturday night Buffet/Exhibition match was a resounding success. GMs Michael Rohde and Alex Stripunsky played a Game/60 game from 2 different rooms. Each had 2 demo boards, one for analysis and one for the current position. Each described their thinking process during the game so players could see a GM mind at work. While feeding the brain, spectators were also feeding their bodies with a nice buffet. The game was a draw. The Millennium Chess Festival, with tournament, blitz tournament, camp, and exhibition is truly a festival and not a limited event one horse show. Tom Braunlich and Rodney Flores were the organizors, Ernie Schlich and Michael Atkins directed.
