1) Introduction

My thanks to Ching Kim Lye, Sinisa Joksic, Christopher Morgan, Vladica Andrejic, Geltan Altanoch, Ales Drinovec, Vladimir Dvorkovich, Laszlo Nagy, Hans Olav Lahlum, Brian Isaksen, Lanfranco Bombelli, Eugeny Atarov, Przemek Jahr, Aard Daanen, Ular Lauk, Thomas Henrich, Jürgen Daniel, Pawel Suwarski, Toni Ayza, Jean-Christophe Basaille, Vesselin Topalov, Yvette Seirawan and all those who helped with this issue.

The Eurotel Trophy knockout first round has just concluded. The only real surprises were the elimination of Leko and Bareev. This week perhaps the most important news was the signs that there may be a move towards a single unified World Championships. I was extremely sceptical about Yasser Seirawan's proposals which he released earlier this year but they have clearly been taken as a real starting point for negotiations. If agreement can be found there will be no losers only winners. Although I expect some tough negotiations with compromise needed from all sides the Einstein Group Proposals (presumably in reality a combination of discussions already held, combined with their negotiating position) look good for FIDE, the Einstein Group and chess enthusiasts. A single accepted classical world championships should be returned to its central and focal point in the elite chess calendar. A successful single World Championships is in my opinion vital for the health of the game as a whole and can be used to attract sponsorship for many other chess events. A single Championships will also be far, far stronger and more valuable than the current split.

Note I've repeated some games given last week using the new April rating list.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Eurotel KO Prague

The Eurotel knockout takes place in Prague April 27th - May 5th 2002. 32 of the best players in the World compete for a prizefund of 500,000 Euros and the Eurotel Trophy. Presented under the auspices of Online World Chess B.V. (Bessel Kok, and Serge Grimaux), it is the highest-level chess event ever to be held in the Czech Republic.

A series of knock-out matches will determine the two finalists, who will then play two games of classical chess during the last two days of the event. Each knock-out match consists of two games of rapid chess. Time rate 25 minutes + 5 seconds per move. Two blitz games and if necessary a final game will be used in case of a tie. The event’s final will have two games played at 40 moves in 2 hours; 20 moves in 1 hour; rest of the game in 30 minutes. If the final is tied after two games, blitz games will be used.

Schedule:

Round 1 - April 28th and 29th
Round 2 - April 30th
Quarter finals May 1st
Semi-finals May 2nd
Rest day May 3rd

17) Internet Human vs Computers

Christopher Morgan has sent details of a human - computer events: ChessBase and KasparovChess sponsored and recently held two online human v. computer events. The first held March 17th-26th 2002 and was an eight game match, GM Boris Gulko (January 2002 ELO 2601) v. four computer programs, two games each, at a time control of game in 60 minutes plus ten seconds a move. The computers won the Gulko match 5-3. Fritz, Hiarcs, and Shredder each won one game, Shredder lost one game and the rest were draws.

The second, nearly complete match, started April 14, 2002 with GM Ilya Smirin (April 2002 ELO 2686, high ELO 2702) under the same time controls, same number of games, and also against four different programs. GM Smirin beat Shredder and Gambit Tiger 2, and has drawn the other five completed games, thus winning the match 4.5 to 2.5 with one game remaining. The Deep Junior v. Smirin game was abandoned after move 66 due to computer problems, when Deep Junior had a won game. Smirin offered to resign but the Junior team, Shay Bushinsky and Amir Ban, programmers of Deep Junior, would not accept Smirin's resignation. This game has been rescheduled for Wednesday May 1 at 1930 GMT. Further details: http://chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=279

All computer programs are the latest and greatest versions as submitted and supervised by their authors, accompanied with special openings preparation. Hardware: Dual Pentium Intel 1GHz 750MB RAM (or faster), for multi processors (Junior, Shredder) P2 2.2GHz for single processor (Hiarcs 8, Tiger).

The games plus commentary are also available on the ChessBase site (http://chessbase.com) and on the KasporovChess site (http://www.kasparovchess.com).

18) Mongolian Championships

Geltan Altanoch reports: The Mongolian Championships took place April 1st-April 12th 2002 in Ulaanbaatar. The venue was the State Pedagogical University. It was the 42nd Edition for the Men's National Championship and 34th Edition for the Women's National Championship respectively. There were 16 men and 12 women players both in round-robin tournament which was the qualification for the National Olympiad team (first 6 men and 4 women) same time. Time control was 90 minutes for 40 moves and then 30 minutes for the rest using still mechnical clocks. The tie-break was results between all players, koya, sonneborn-berger and wins in descending order as recommended by FIDE in 1998.

20) Cuban Championships

The Cuban Championships took place March 31st - April 20th 2002. The venue was Holguin City. Confirmation that 18 year old Lenier Dominguez took the title on SB tie-break from Neuris Delgado both finished on 12.5/17. Games and table was given last week.

21) Astana Cancelled

The Astana tournament scheduled at the end of May has been cancelled this year. Organisers are reported to be saying the event will take place in 2003. In addition to this report last week there are a few more details. According to John Henderson of the Scotsman the cancellation took place "after the Kazakh Minister for Tourism and Sport, whose department organised the event, was unceremoniously removed from office by President Nazarbayev due to funding "irregularities". The event was to have featured Kasparov, Kramnik, Anand, Topalov, Adams and Kostenko.

22) Einstein Group Proposals and FIDE Chanages

Yasser Seirawan's proposals earlier this year for the reunification of the FIDE and now Einstein World Championships seem to have led to movement on both sides.

On Thursday 25th April 2002 the Einstein Group PLC and Madame Nahed Ojjeh (sponsor of the NAO Masters) released their proposals for re-unification ahead of meetings in Prague. I understand the overall concept outlined has been seen by all interested parties and looks likely to be the starting point of serious negotiations in May. They are a modification of Seirawan's original proposals. The centrepiece is a reunification match between the FIDE and Einstein PLC Champions. These are currently Ruslan Ponomariov and Vladimir Kramnik however both of whom will have to play challengers before the unification match. A new organisation which will work closely with FIDE will be set up to administer the new cycle, Seirawan's idea of commissioners has been adopted. There will also be a GM Committee to oversee the organisation.

A joint proposal from the Einstein Group plc (London) and Madame Nahed Ojjeh (Paris)

Einstein Group (Einstein), the London based multi media group, that owns the einstein.tv television channel, and Madame Nahed Ojjeh today announced their intention to support the reunification of the chess world. Einstein and Madame Ojjeh are looking forward to collaborating with all other interested parties and have developed this proposal which takes into account existing ideas and contractual obligations. The document aims to help ensure that the Prague meeting will be a success.

Nahed Ojjeh: „I am very pleased to work with Einstein and any other party who shares the same aims. The following proposal is an excellent basis to reach the goal of reunfication. After ten years of division a solution is needed in the interest of professional players, sponsors and chess lovers. A reunification of the Chess World will assist in popularising chess and spreading it to schools. Learning chess has been proven to assist in children’s educational development.“

1.Reunification

1.1. „Einstein Cycle“

- Einstein Candidates Tournament in Dortmund

The Dortmund qualifier will run as announced. Participants: Adams (England), Barejew (Russia), Gelfand (Israel), Leko (Hungary), Lutz (Germany), Morozevich (Russia), Shirov (Spain), Topalov (Bulgaria). The prize fund will be USD $400.000 (1st USD $160.000, 2nd USD $100.000, 2x3rd USD $40.000, 4x5th to 8th USD $15.000), guaranteed by Madame Nahed Ojjeh (France). The German tax will be deducted from the prize money.

- Einstein World Chess Championship Match

Classical World Chess Championship Match - Vladimir Kramnik vs the winner of the Dortmund qualifier is to be held in April/May 2003 according to the existing Einstein/Kramnik agreement. 16 games of classical chess with draw odds for Einstein World Champion Vladimir Kramnik. The prize fund will be divided between the finalists so that the winner receives 60% of the prize fund and the loser 40%. In the event of a draw each finalist shall receive one half of the prize fund, but Vladimir Kramnik shall keep the title. Detail rules and regulations to be codified by the Committee of Grandmasters. Full media and commercial rights owned by Einstein. 5% of the prize fund to the Commissioners‘ Office for the administration (including the creation of a Professional Players‘ Health and Benefits‘ Fund) and for the support of the Committee of Grandmasters.

1.2. „FIDE Cycle“

- Match 1

Anand (India) vs Ivanchuk (Ukraine): 6 games of classical chess + possible tiebreak. Detail rules and regulations to be codified by the Committee of Grandmasters. The prize fund of USD $150.000 - guaranteed by Madame Nahed Ojjeh - to be divided 60% for the winner and 40% for the loser. The host country‘s tax will be deducted from the prize money. Event to be held in the period August/September 2002.

- Match 2

Kasparov (Russia) vs the winner of Match 1: 8 games of classical chess + possible tiebreak. Detailed rules and regulations to be codified by the Committee of Grandmasters according to match 1. The prize fund of USD $250.000 – guaranteed by Madame Nahed Ojjeh – to be divided 60% for the winner and 40% for the loser. The host country‘s tax will be deducted from the prize fund. Event to be held in the period November/December 2002.

- Alternative:

Another format (e.g in one event) to determine a challenger to FIDE World Champion Ruslan Ponomariov is also possible. The prize fund of USD $400.000 is guaranteed then by Madame Nahed Ojjeh. The host country’s tax will be deducted from the prize fund. Detail rules and regulations to be codified by the Committee of Grandmasters.

- FIDE World Chess Championship Match

FIDE World Champion Ruslan Ponomariov vs the winner of Match 2 or vs the winner of an alternative competition to be held in May/June 2003. 16 games of classical chess with draw odds for FIDE World Champion Ruslan Ponomariov. FIDE to be responsible for the prize fund. Prize fund to be divided between the finalists so that the winner receives 60% of the prize fund and the loser 40%. In the event of a draw each finalist shall receive one half of the prize fund, but Ruslan Ponomariov shall keep the title. More detailed rules and regulations to be codified by the Committee of Grandmasters. Full media and commercial rights owned by FIDE. 5% of the prize fund to the Commissionars‘ Office for the administration (including the creation of a Professional Players‘ Health and Benefits‘ Fund) and for the support of the Committee of Grandmasters.

1.3. Reunification World Chess Championship Match

- The Reunification World Champion Match means a match between the winners of both cycles: "Einstein World Chess Champion vs FIDE World Chess Champion". 16 games of classical chess + possible tie-breaks, no draw odds. The Commissioners Office to be responsible for the venue, prize fund and organization. The minimum prize fund should not be less than the best prize fund of the two World Championship Matches before. The prize fund will be divided between the finalists so that the winner receives 60% of the prize fund and the loser 40%. The winner of the event is the "undisputed" World Chess Champion.

- Detailed rules and regulations to be codified by the Committee of Grandmasters. Einstein TV will have full media rights, but the new professional world chess organization in classical chess to be founded by the end of May 2002 will have full commercial rights to be refined in a separate agreement. The new organization will be administered by the Commissioners Office and the Committee of Grandmasters.

- FIDE will sanction the reunification match as well as all further events in the area of Classical World Chess Championships related to the new organization. From the prize fund of the reunification match and from all further World Chess Championship events in classical chess a total of 15% will be deducted, to be apportioned as follows: 10% to FIDE, 5% of the prize fund to the Commissioners' Office for the administration (including the creation of a Professional Players' Health and Benefits' Fund) and for the support of the Committee of Grandmasters.

- An agreement related to the reunification cycle and future sanctioned events in the arena of the Classical Chess World Championships to be signed in Prague on 6 May 2002 by the FIDE President, Einstein Group Plc London and Bessel Kok acting for the new Commissioners Office.

2. New Cycle after the reunification

Taking the proposal of GM Yasser Seirawan into account the following modified format will be determined:

- Each cycle starts with a "Classical World Chess Open" to be held soon after the World Championship Match (the first Open soon after the Reunification Match). Every player with an ELO rating of more than 2600 has the right to participate. The TOP 100 players (according to rating) are to be invited. A further 100 players are to be invited as FIDE nominees (FIDE zonals). The Classical Chess World Open Tournament played under the the Swiss System should have a minimum number of players (300). The TOP 50 players should receive free accomodation. The number of games should not be less than 13. All detailed rules and regulations to be developed by the Committee of Grandmasters.

- The top four finishers in the Classical World Swiss Open qualify for the next stage of a „Classical World Chess Candidates Tournament“ and are joined by the three world’s highest rated players and the finalist of the previous World Championship Match. The format, all rules and regulations to be developed by the Committee of Grandmasters.

- The winner of the Candidates Tournament will challenge the Chess World Champion. The „Classical World Chess Championship Match“ will last 16 classical games. The Committee of Grandmasters will be responsible for all detailed rules and regulations.

Every cycle has a fixed duration of two years. The first World Chess Championship Match after the reunification has to be finished by the end of November 2005, the next one by the end of November 2007, and so on to ensure stability and predictability as in other sports. From all prize funds in the new classical cycles FIDE will receive 10%, and another 5% of the prize fund will go to the Commissioners‘ Office for the administration (incl. the creation of a Professional Players‘ Health and Benefits‘ Fund) and for the support of the Committee of Grandmasters.

3. Organization

3.1. Commissioners‘ Office

The Commissioners‘ Office is responsible for the contract management with the players and their agents, oversees the regulations, the bidding procedures, commercial and media rights, the distribution of above mentioned fees, etc. The Commissioners are working closely together with the FIDE representatives. Any important points of contention are communicated in writing by organizers, players and agents to the Commissioners, whose decision is final. The Commissioners hold office for a non-renewable five-year term.

Proposals to be made to the following Gentlemen:

3.2. Committee of Grandmasters

A committee of respected and well known professional chess players will codify the rules of play, including but not limited to issues such as rating errors, tiebreak procedures, proper time frames within a two year cycle, staging of events, tournaments, calendar, health benefits etc.

Proposals to be made to the following Gentlemen:

4. Remarks

4.1. Classical Chess

All games to be played with Classical Chess time controls. This means a game 40 moves in 2 hours each; 20 moves in1 hour each and then an extra 30 minutes for the rest of the game.

4.2. Rapid Chess

FIDE will be the responsible organization in the area of all professional rapid chess events, such as rapid or blitz Chess World Championships, Grand Prix’s and so on. The classical chess organization guarantees to abstain from activities in the area of rapid chess with the exception of tiebreaks within the Classical World Championship.

4.3. Relations

FIDE and the new professional organization agree to work closly together in all possible areas of professional chess:

The management of a well organized event schedule should have the highest priority. The goal is to avoid clashes between all top events in the World of Chess. Such as: Classical World Championship events, FIDE Rapid Chess Grand Prix’s and existing Classical Top Tournaments.

FIDE as well as the Commissioners will try to motivate the elite players to participate in both top competitions: rapid and classical chess.

4.4 Olympic Movement

FIDE is the active and governing body and strives to make chess an olympic sport and holds all rights for possible events in the arena of the Olympic Games. The endeavors of FIDE will be supported by the new organization and the elite Grandmasters.

In a Press Release on FIDE's website Kirsan Ilyumzhinov says "I am pleased to accept an invitation to attend the closing ceremony of the Eurotel World Chess Trophy tournament on May 5th in the Czech Republic's capital city of Prague. This is an outstanding event bringing together the top chess grandmasters in a world-class venue. The day after the conclusion of the tournament, May 6th, a meeting will be held in a spirit of goodwill and compromise in which we will discuss the issues facing the chess world and explore ways of coordinating our efforts for the greatest good of chess."

Ilyumzhinov has made changes of his own to FIDE Commerce which may indicate preparation for the meeting. At the FIDE Dubai Grand Prix the players arrived to find that the prize fund had been cut. FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov publically blamed Octagon the sports marketing company who in turn said that it was the fault of FIDE Commerce. According to reports in the Scotsman by John Henderson Octagon are on their way out as their contract won't be renewed and the head of FIDE Commerce Artim Tarasov has already gone with Iljumzhinov buying up his share of the company.

23) Topalov Interview

Vesselin Topalov was kind enough to grant an interview to me in the last week. He talks about where his career is now and the challenges ahead especially in the Dortmund qualifier.

Topalov talks about his rise in the rankings ....

Last year was, in general, positive for me, as even though I didn't reach far in FIDE WC in Moscow, I was gaining ELO points in all tournaments and now after NAO tournament in Cannes this year I'm up to 2745. Also I shared first in the Amber 2001 rapid and blindfold tournament. Now according to the FIDE April rating list I am World number 4, I'm number 3 in the Professional list. I don't think rating means a lot when the margin is symbolic, for me the changes in ratings show how the player has performed during the counted period of time.

Anand's position as World Number 3 looks under threat, not just from you but other players ....

It is true that Adams, Ponomariov and myself now have chances to replace Anand as number 3 on the rating list, but this is because he is getting closer to us [his rating is falling]. I dont think I should speak too much about him and Kramnik, as the year has only just started and it is only at the end we can make an assessment.

Kramnik has also started poorly this year.....

In Vladimir's case I guess he played very little due to the twice postponed match against Fritz in Bahrein and that's why he was out of form in Monaco.

What do think about the Dortmund Qualifier?

In my opinion the chess world should always welcome a new sponsor and that having an alternative cycle has been to the players benefit in the past. It is good if not only FIDE is giving money for chess.

If we look back the creation of new organizations have been positive for chess and players in general. The creation of new tournaments has not just been good for the elite players, many good or even average grandmasters have improved their living standards considerably. Also, Dortmund deserves to hold this event, as for many years it has been famous for attracting elite chess players and the organizers have experience with such events.

You can read more about the Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting at: http://www.chessgate.de/dortmund/index.html

What are your prospects in Dortmund?

Now that Kasparov has refused to take part in this Qualifier there will be no clear favorite and even in the group stage the fight will be very close. I am sure that everybody will try to show his best and that will make the tournament very exciting.

What are your ambitions in chess?

About my ambitions I think in the near future I can try to make the top 3. Kasparov and Kramnik are too far away at the moment so I'm not thinking any further than that. But of course, my biggest goal is the Dortmund Qualifier, as the winner of it will have a big challenge ahead. I am 27 which is a good age for chess, as now I have knowledge, experience and still enough energy.

Do you feel you're a better player than during your first peak?

I know and understand chess much better than in 1996,when I showed my best results, but I think then I was probably stronger. When you are young everything looks much easier, downs are unknown to you yet, so you think it will always be like this. Also in 1996 my rating was 2750, which was worth much more than the 2745 what I have now. But if I keep rising, then I can reach that level again.

How do you work at your chess?

I guess I don't do anything different from the rest. I work with Silvio Danailov, who is also my manager. Mainly we spend time on opening preparation, but I also practice the other aspects of the game.

Topalov comments on possible meetings in Prague surrounding Yasser Seirawan's proposals.

I am afraid too much attention in Prague will be paid to the distribution of the prize funds for the WC and other datails. For me, of much bigger importance are things like what should we do to attract sponsors to put their money into chess, bring chess fans to the playing halls or to watch us on Internet and always try to grow and create new events. The GMA and PCA Grand Prix events were excellent ideas, but they collapsed because of financial problems. So what we should do is to try and make sure this never happens again.

[The news of the Einstein press release came as I was finishing the interview with Topalov he adds "in my opinion, the news from Einstein look promising, we'll see what happens in Prague."]

Finally I notice you spell your first name Vesselin, the FIDE rating list spells it Veselin which is right?

I am also confused about the way my name should be written. In my first passport I was Vesselin, but in the new one I am Veselin. I dont really care, but I think the first one was correct.

Additional links, the official http://www.chessgate.de/dortmund/index.html Vladimir Kramnik has also given a recent interview to ChessBase about his view of the Dortmund qualifier.
