1) Introduction

My thanks to Vladimir Dvorkovich, Laszlo Nagy, Leonid Gofshtein, Andras Bacsi, Luis Manuel Pérez Rodríguez, Carsten Hensel, Eirik Gullaksen, Paul Suranyi, Milen Petrov, Johan Berntsen, John Donaldson, Alexander Sulypa, Adolivio Capece, Eugeny Atarov, Genden Altanoch, and all those who helped with this issue.

This week saw another surprise victory in a major tournament when Sergei Movsesian took first place in the Sarajevo tournament. Humpy Koneru seems, subject to comfirmation to have become the youngest woman to achieve the full GM title. The FIDE Grand Prix reached Moscow and Kasparov seems in determined form reaching the semi-finals today.

Prior to the event was one of the most confusing press conferences I've ever had to cover. Firstly the early news came through in a Russian report which proved rather hard to understand the details (mainly because the original was in Russian) but even after a full account in English was made available it was difficult to interpret. It emerged that FIDE were proposing a change to the Prague agreement in the precise area that had taken so long to agree in the first place. Ilyumzhinov proposed to downgrade the Dortmund tournament to a qualifier for the second round of the next World Championship cycle, cancel the Einstein Group title defence by Vladimir Kramnik and hold a three player event with Kramnik, Kasparov and Ponomariov for the title. This seems to have been talked about in the context of an interview Kramnik gave expressing some concerns about the process (he clarifies these points in his letter below) that seems to have angered both Kasparov and Ilyumzhinov.

FIDE's proposals I don't understand, Ilyumzhinov said they were trying to address the GMs objections to Prague. Yet they didn't even do that. Apart from accelerating the start date of the 2nd cycle and saving a few months in 2005 they don't appear to do very much except undermine the Prague agreement. If he had propsed a qualifying event for the leading missing players to add a fourth player to their proposed three player final this would have addressed the letter. However it has to be pointed out this has never been an option. Kramnik explains clearly that his negotiating position, his price, for unification was that he defend his title under the Einstein Group and then the winner joins the unification process.

I have learned this week that everyone thinks something is wrong with the Prague agreement, the only disagreement is whose fault it is. What the Prague agreement means seems to differ from person to person and there seem to be a number of interpretations around. I think the difficulties involved in reunifying the titles have been forgotten. These complexities were the one's that led me to say to Seirawan at the time of publication that his proposals had zero chance of working. In particular I could see no earthly reason why the Einstein Group should give up the rights to hold their version of the title. Prague showed that there was a will for a solution but the difficulties still remain very close to the surface. Personally I had hoped to leave this issue alone and get on with covering real chess events, maybe after this week I can do just that.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

Prague Chess Unity Plan
Yasser Seirawan Proposals

There was a pre-event Grand Prix Press Conference in Moscow [you can read the Russian Journal's Account of the Press Conference here with Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and Garry Kasparov. Ilyumzhinov was the main speaker.

There were two main points of interest. Firstly Ilyumzhinov criticised Vladimir Kramnik for an interview he gave to Kommersant. Kirsan stated "the document signed in Prague is an agreement and not a statement of intentions." Which I read to mean the Prague agreement is not to be changed. I had originally read this as Prague still could still be changed an interpretation which I could reconcile with his new proposals (see below).

According to sources from Kasparovchess.com the key Kramnik quote is "From the public interest standpoint the unification is necessary. On the other hand, the scenario of this unification could have been different. Ivanchuk and Anand could take part in an additional tournament. As a result four grandmasters would qualify and join Kasparov and Ponomariov seeded straight into the final. However, Bessel Kok did not approve this proposal. FIDE and Kasparov were against it either. Later, I run across Anand in the Prague airport. He was shocked: how was it possible to throw overboard the chess player of his level without thinking twice? I hope that the match Kasparov - Ponomariov will be transformed into a Candidate Tournament. A new cycle in classical chess should commence right after the unification match. The assured prize fund of several millions dollars is needed for it. What will happen if the organizers don't guarantee money? This newborn structure will collapse like a house of cards. The mass media fell into euphoria and called the resolution of unification a historical agreement. In reality, it is just a protocol of intentions." This brought about two statements one from Kramnik and the other Einstein Group confirming they intend to go ahead as agreed under Prague.

Secondly Ilyumzhinov suggested he could address the GM Open letter's concerns by changing the unification process. A summary of Ilyumzhinov's proposals: unification match tournament in May 2003 of three players with Kasparov, Kramnik and Ponomariov followed by an 8 game match between the top 2 for the title. This immediately followed by a new cycle with a KO in July, further Candidates in October 2003 (winner Dortmund included) and May 2004 a four player series including the champion in October 2004 and a final in May 2005 (under Prague this was to be October - November 2005). Statement on behalf of Madame Nahed Ojjeh and Einstein Group

Following the press conference given in Moscow by FIDE President H.E. Kirsan Iljumzhinov and Garry Kasparov, Madame Nahed Ojjeh (Paris) and the Einstein Group plc (London) would like to issue the following statement.

  1. Einstein Group reaffirms its intention to go ahead with its Classical Chess World Championship cycle as agreed in Prague beginning with the Candidates Tournament in Dortmund, which will start on July 6th, 2002.
  2. Einstein Group will organise the resulting match for the title of Classical World Chess Champion between Vladimir Kramnik and the winner of Dortmund. This match will take place in April/May 2003.
  3. Einstein Group and Classical World Chess Champion Vladimir Kramnik remain, therefore, fully committed to the agreement made in Prague on the 6th May and support the idea of unification to be achieved after the Einstein World Championship Match has taken place as described in that agreement.
  4. The Candidates Tournament at Dortmund will be supported by NAO Chess and Madame Nahed Ojjeh.
  5. Madame Nahed Ojjeh is pleased to announce that she will provide an increased prize fund at Dortmund of EURO 300.000 (net of taxes).

A Statement of Classical World Chess Champion Vladimir Kramnik

Less than one month after signing the Prague agreement I find it necessary to clarify my position in order to avoid misunderstandings and to comment on certain statements made during the last few days.

1. I reaffirm my intention to fulfill the agreement made in Prague on 6th May supporting the idea of reunification to be achieved after both the Einstein Classical World Chess Championship Match and a FIDE World Chess Championship.

2. I again declare my willingness, under reasonable conditions, to participate in a reunification match as described in the Prague agreement which would be against the winner of a possible FIDE cycle (or against the winner of the proposed match between Ruslan Ponomariov vs Gary Kasparov) provided that I am successful in my own World Championship Match.

3. Contrary to some statements and reports which have misinterpreted the Prague agreement I did not give up the title of Classical Chess World Champion which is based on 116 years of chess history and which is also respected in the Prague agreement. My match against the winner of the Candidates Tournament in Dortmund will be a Classical World Championship Final and not a semifinal. I made some concessions at Prague which have never been made by a Classical World Champion before in order to support the unification process. These were; accepting Ruslan Ponomariov as a Chess World Champion and therefore giving up draw odds from the unification match onward and giving up my right to be seeded automatically into the finals of future cycles.

4. Einstein Group and I are ready for unification as described in the Prague agreement. However, I am fully aware that it will be not easy for any proposed new organisation in professional chess to raise the necessary sponsorship and to develop a business plan acceptable to FIDE. According to the agreement made in Prague the pre-unification Einstein events are to be excluded from the business plan. My partner – Einstein Group plc London – is responsible for the staging of these events and for securing the budgets. Einstein Group will organise the Dortmund Candidates Tournament (6 to 21 July 2002) and the resulting title match between myself and the winner of the Dortmund qualifier in April/May 2003. Therefore our side clearly relieves the proposed new organisation of these costs and responsibilities.

5. I hope that the FIDE cycle will be more inclusive than currently proposed and consist of more than one match between Ruslan Ponomariov and Gary Kasparov. A solution which included more players would be better suited to the principles FIDE has followed in recent years. This is in principle my opinion but I also understand that this decision is not in my responsibility. Furthermore I support the proposal to found a Grandmaster Steering Committee to be elected in a democratic way as a part of a professional management body.

6. Statements which were made during the Moscow press conference on 30 May 2002 about financial problems in Dortmund are groundless. This can be seen clearly from the press release of the Einstein Group dated 31 May 2002. The same I would like to say about statements that I would be an obstacle to the unification process. Such statements made during the above mentioned Moscow press conference and before are incorrect. I believe that such comments are not helpful to the unification movement. Rather these are the real obstacles in raising the necessary global sponsorships. I would like to express the hope that all sides will be more cautious in their future statements.

It is clear that endeavors to realize unification will be only successful if all sides will be able to fulfill their promises in this process. Therefore I believe it is time to start with the agreed steps in a constructive and fair way which will be then for the sake of the Chess World.

9) Hamburg Individual Championships

Eirik T. Gullaksen reports that the Hamburg individual championships were played 18th-26th May 2002. Swedish GM Jonny Hector repeated last year's performance with an impressive win. Hector took 8 points out of 9 and was 2 whole points ahead of the nearest competitors, GM Ivan Farago, IM Emanuel Berg and IM Florian Handke. German IM Florian Handke made a well-deserved GM-norm after playing 7 GMs during the 9 rounds. His eight-round game against IM Piotr Murdzia was probably the best game of the tournament.

13) Koneru breaks Record

Humpy Koneru of India made a GM norm in the Elekes Memorial Grandmaster Chess Tournament 18th-28th May 2002. She looks to have set a new World Record of becoming the Youngest-Ever Woman to achieve the Men's GM Title. She is 15 Years, 1 Month, and 27 Days beating Judit Polgar's Record of 15 years, 4 months and 27 days. This is subject to her rating going over 2500 in July which looks a formality. Games and details should follow.
