1) Introduction

Another quiet week. The main tournament results of the week was Nigel Short's tournament victory in the Sigeman & Co tournament in Malmoe. Elsewhere there were announcements that the Vladimir Kramnik and Deep Fritz match will go ahead and that there will be a Russia vs. the Rest of the World Match later in the year.

2) Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament

The Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament took place 6th-14th June 2002, Malmö, Sweden. The event was Category: 13 (2572). Nigel Short took clear first with 6.5/9 half a point clear of Peter Heine Nielsen. IM Leif Erlend Johannessen made his third GM-norm with 5/9.

3) Einstein Group confirm Kramnik - Fritz match is on

The Einstein Group announced on June 13th it has concluded its final agreement with the General Organisation for Youth and Sport (GOYS) in Bahrain for the Brains in Bahrain competition between Vladimir Kramnik and Deep Fritz. The Man-Machine match will be played over 8 games October 4th-19th 2002.

4) New Match of the Century

Eugeny Atarov reports that there was an ITAR-TASS press conference on Tuesday 12th June 2002 attended by Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, Garry Kasparov, Slava Fetisov (Russian minister of sport) and Andrey Selivanov (President of Russian chess federation) to officially announce a new "Match of Century". The famous match between Soviets and the Rest of the World was first held in Belgrade 1970 and again in London in 1984. This time it will be Russia on its own. It is to be held in September 8th-12th 2002 in Moscow over 10 boards using a Scheveningen System and rapid chess (25+10). The exact composition of the teams is to be announced but Vladimir Kramnik, Gary Kasparov, Anatoly Karpov, Alexander Khalifman, Alexander Morozevich, Evgeny Bareev, Alexander Grischuk, Peter Svidler, Alexey Dreev and probably either Sergey Rublevsky, Vadim Zvjagintsev or Alexander Motylev. The opposition will be Vishwanathan Anand, Ruslan Ponomariov, Vesselin Topalov, Vassily Ivanchuk, Boris Gelfand, Peter Leko, Aleksei Shirov, Judit Polgar and Ye Jiangchuan with possibly Ilia Smirin, Vladimir Akopian, Zurab Azmaiparashvili, Joel Lautier, Rustam Kasimdzhanov, Nigel Short and Loek van Wely.

5) Manises Chess Festival

The IV International Chess Festival in Manises, Spain took place 14th-16th June 2002. Anatoly Karpov beat Alexandra Kosteniuk in the final. 10 minutes per game per player. My thanks to Simón Hernández. Only games from the final available at the moment.

7) Bosnian Teams

The Bosnia-Herzegovina Team Championships took place in Neum 2nd-8th June 2002. There were 100 players (23 grandmasters and 21 international masters) including Michael Adams, Alexei Shirov, Sergei Movsesian, Predrag Nikolic, Ivan Sokolov, Smbat Lputian, Zdenko Kozul, Mikhail Kobalia,... The winners were SK BOSNA, Sarajevo (Adams, Shirov, Ivan Sokolov, Sergei Movsesian, Teimour Radjabov etc) ahead of SK KISELJAK, Kiseljak (Predrag Nikolic, Smbat Lputian, Mikhail Kobalia etc) and SK NAPREDAK,Sarajevo (Ognjen Cvitan and Zoltan Varga etc). In a way SK Kiseljak were unlucky, the championships were settled on board points not match points, Kiseljak won all their matches defeating the winners 3.5-2.5, however Sarajevo were heavier scorers with 42/54 points three points better than Kiseljak. Alexei Shirov scored 2/2 and Michael Adams 4.5/5. Games from the final round now available. My thanks to Senan Dervisevic and Sead Bicevic.

8) First Saturday June

There were GM, IM and FM events as part of the First Saturday June tournaments. Evgeny Postny of Israel made a GM norm and won the category VIII GM tournament. IM Sergey Frenburg also of Israel scored an 11 round norm (8/11). In the IM Tournament Bui Vinh made his 4th IM norm with 9/10 and won the tournament with 10/11 My thanks to Laszlo Nagy and Andras Bacsi.

The 3rd Asean Age-Group Championships took place in Singapore 8th-14th June 2002. Hoang Canh Huan won the boys under-18 event. There were sections for boys and girls at: U8, U10, U12, U14, U16 & U18.

13) Panamerican U20

John Donaldson reports: The Pan American Junior and Pan American Girls Under 20 Championships were held from June 4 to 14 in La Paz, Bolivia, at an elevation of over 12,000 feet. IMs Rafael Prasca of Venezuela, Daniel Mieles of Ecuador and Hikaru Nakamura of the United States tied for first at 7 from 9 with Prasca winning on the progressive tiebreak and receiving a nine game GM norm. The Pan Am Girls Under 20 Championship was held as a round robin and won by WFM Cindy Tsai of the United States who received the WIM title and a nine game WGM norm. The event was well organized by the Bolivian Chess Federation and ably directed by Mexican arbiter Jorge Vega.

Advanced Chess in Leon and Open

Vladimir Kramnik and Viswanathan Anand will play an Advanced Chess Match in Leon, Spain June 20th to June 24th 2002.

They will be playing Advanced Chess with both players consulting with their databases and chess programs (Chessbase is one of the sponsors of the tournament). Each player has 1 hour for the whole game. Schedule: Drawing of lots June 20th at the Conde Luna Hotel of León. The 6th Hogeschool Zeeland Tournament in Vlissingen (The Netherlands) will take place August 4th-11th 2002. It's a 9 rounds Swiss, FIDE-rated. Imre Konig Memorial

The Mechanics' Institute of San Francisco, the oldest continuously operating chess club in the United States (founded in 1854), will be hosting the Imre Konig Memorial from September 4th-15th 2002.

Participants in the event, which will be Category 12 or 13, are GMs Suat Atalik, Alexander Baburin, Walter Browne, Larry Christiansen, Nick DeFirmian, John Fedorowicz, Lubomir Ftacnik, Yury Shulman, Alex Wojtkiewicz and Alex Yermolinsky, plus teenage IMs Varuzhan Akobian and Hikaru Nakamura. This will be the strongest international round robin held in the United States since the 1995 Pan Pacific, also organized by the Mechanics.

Hastings 2002

The 78th Hastings International Congress will take place 28th December 2002 - 5th January 2003. The official entry form will be published early in August and will appear on the website http://hastingschess.org.uk

Events schedule is as follows: The Premier Tournament will run from 28th December 2002 to 5th January 2003. It will be an all-play-all event for 10 invited players.

The Challengers Tournament will also run from 28th December to 5th January. This will be a Swiss event and will provide opportunities for title norms and for FIDE ratings.

A new event this year will be an opening Weekend Congress running on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th December 2002. It will probably be in four graded sections and will comprise five games - three on Saturday and two on Sunday. Christmas Tournament will be in its usual format - participants will be divided into graded sections of about 16 players. It will run from Monday 30th December to Friday 3rd January 2003 The final Weekend Congress will run from Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th January 2003 As usual there will be six games and the event will be in four graded sections.

12th Heart of Finland Open

The 12th Heart of Finland Open takes place in Jyväskylä, July 17th-21st 2002. The tournament is played in one group with Swiss system. The event is FIDE-rated, and there are possibilities to reach title norms. There is the option to start the tournament from the 2nd round with a ½ point bye. Time rate: 2 hours / 40 moves + 1 hour to finish.

Entry fees GM/IM free (must register May 31 at the latest), FM/U20 50 EUR, ELO-players 60 EUR, others 80 EUR. 10% discount from the entry fee if registration before May 31, 20% discount if registration before March 31. Total prize fund approx. 7000 EUR, also rating prizes.

New Internet Correspondence Game to Begin

Beginning March 11th, 2002 the World Team will begin a new game against GM Nick de Firmian. Having most recently finished the second of two games against Chinese IM Yin Hao (WT 1.5 YH 0.5) the World Team now will play against three-time U.S. champion Nick de Firmian, who will play the white pieces.

The World Team consists of players from around the World, many of whom came together for the first time during the Kasparov vs. World Internet Game held in 1999. The games against Yin Hao attracted players from Brazil, Canada, England, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland and the United States.

Everyone willing to follow the rules of the game is welcome to play in this new game against GM de Firmian. To participate or observe go to the World Team strategy board and official site at

Plaskett vs The ROW

Jeff Sonas has updated his site: http://www.chessmetrics.com/. It now has lots of colorful graphs. It includes ratings based on ChessBase games from 1851 to 1998, and then weekly rating lists based on TWIC issues from January 1999 to September 10th 2001.

Hawaii International Chess Festival Postponed
