1) Introduction

2) Biel Chess Festival

The 35th Biel International Chess Festival took place July 20th to August 3rd 2002. There were ten different tournaments including a GM -Tournament (category 16) and a match between the swiss national team and Computer Shredder 6-0 from Chessbase (I can't connect to the main pages to get details of the side events).

Ilya Smirin won the main GM tournament with 6/10 half a point clear of Vladislav Tkachiev and Alexey Dreev. Victor Korchnoi finished on 50% with 5/10.

3) Lost Boys Tournament

The 2002 Lost Boys Open took place in Amsterdam 26th July - 4th August 2002. Loek Van Wely conceded just one draw (to Florian Handke) on the way to a crushing 8.5/9 score. He was 1.5 points clear of Ivan Sokolov, Florian Handke and Friso Nijboer.

4) Liepajas Rokade

The 9th annual Chess festival, "Liepajas Rokade", organized by "Sport Club Baltic" and "Liepaja's Chess Club", was held August 1st–August 4th. There were three tournaments during the festival: Grandmasters Super tournament, Open tournament, and Blitz tournament.

5) British Chess Championships

The Smith & Williamson British Chess Championships take place in Torquay, 28th July - 10th August 2002. The event is open to British and Commonwealth players and there is a strong Indian entry this year.

Jon Speelman, Pentala Harikrishna, Jonathan Rowson, Nicholas Pert, Joe Gallagher, Dibyendu Barua, Luke McShane, Humpy Koneru, Peter Wells and Matthew Turner all lead with 4.5/6.

7) Mercosur Cup

The V 'República Argentina' Chess Masters Tournament - Mercosur Cup sponsored by Chessbase GmbH took place July 18th-28th 2002. Bernardo Roselli Mailhe won with 7.5/10 (and made a GM norm) half a point clear of Oscar Panno and the computer program HIARCS 8. My thanks to Luis Scalise.

14) 1st Bergamo Open

Dario Mione reports on Bergamo Chess Club's first international open held on the last weekend of July 26th-28th 3003. The tournament took place in Città Alta, the historic center of the town (about 50 km from Milan). Italian champion IM Bruno Belotti won the event after a tough game against GM Igor Efimov in the last round ended in a draw. Belotti, who was born and lives near Bergamo, scored 5.5/6. GM Igor Naumkin (RUS), GM Igor Efimov (ITA), GM Ventzislav Inkiov (BUL), IM Andjelko Dragojlovic (YUG), IM Daniel Contin (ITA) and italian masters Jan Bednarich and Carlo Barlocco were second with 5 points. There were 95 players from six countries (3 GM, 5 IM and 2 FM).

The Olomouc Chess Summer 2002 takes place at 31st July 8th August 2002 in Olomouc (Czech Republic). There are 4 groups of IM round-robin tournaments, a FIDE open and tournament for youngsters up to the age of 18. 19) Trier Open

Stefan Muellenbruck reports: to celebrate its 125th anniversary, the German club Turm Trier 1877 organized an Open which took place from 29th July - 4th August 2002. The A group (rating higher than 1900) had 32 players, among them 1 GM, 1 WGM, 5 IMs and 2 FMs. After 9 rounds it was won by WGM Inna Gaponenko (UKR, ELO 2415). She set the pace of the tournament, including a win over the highest rated player, GM Mikhail M. Ivanov (RUS, ELO 2489), and could afford a last round loss against FM Kunin and still take clear first place. Runners-up were IM Viesturs Meijers (LAT, ELO 2475), FM Vitali Kunin (GER, ELO 2459), who made an IM norm, and IM Doru Ionescu (ROM, ELO 2450). Gulsana Barpiyeva of Turm Trier made a WIM norm. The B group (36 players, rating below 2000) was won on tiebreak by Marcel Krosenbrink (NED).

The 23rd Bethune International Open takes place 26th-30th December 2002 in the Salle Olof Palme, Commercial center La Rotonde, 62400 Bethune, FRANCE. The 9th annual Chess festival, "Liepajas Rokade", organized by "Sport Club Baltic" and "Liepaja's Chess Club", will be held from August 1st–August 4th. Curacao Open

The Curacao (*) 1962-2002 chess tournament is an open tournament that will be held November 16th-28th 2002. The tournament commemorates the 40th Anniversary of the Candidates tournament in 1962. Viktor Korchnoi (a player) and Yuri Averbach (a second) from the original event have already confirmed that they will return after 40 years. The tournament will have 9 rounds and a maximum of 120 players including about 15 titled players. 6th Mind Sports Olympiad

The 6th Mind Sports Olympiad will take place at Loughborough University from August 14th-18th 2002. This is the first year that the event, which started in London in 1997, has moved outside the capital.

The Mind Sports Olympiad is an annual games festival in which all the contests are thinking games. The competitors play each other at a variety of well known strategy games such as Chess, Bridge, Backgammon, Scrabble, Othello and Go, and compete for Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. There are junior medals for those aged under 16.

Gold, Silver and Bronze medallions will be awarded to the top adults and top juniors in each competition. In addition there will be sponsored prizes in some tournaments.

2003 Australian Open Championships

The 2003 Australian Open Championships will take place 2nd-10th January 2003 at the Penrith Panthers World of Entertainment in Western Sydney. Imre Konig Memorial

The Mechanics' Institute of San Francisco, the oldest continuously operating chess club in the United States (founded in 1854), will be hosting the Imre Konig Memorial from September 4th-15th 2002.

Participants in the event, which will be Category 12 or 13, are GMs Suat Atalik, Alexander Baburin, Walter Browne, Larry Christiansen, Nick DeFirmian, John Fedorowicz, Lubomir Ftacnik, Yury Shulman, Alex Wojtkiewicz and Alex Yermolinsky, plus teenage IMs Varuzhan Akobian and Hikaru Nakamura. This will be the strongest international round robin held in the United States since the 1995 Pan Pacific, also organized by the Mechanics.

Hastings 2002

The 78th Hastings International Congress will take place 28th December 2002 - 5th January 2003. The official entry form will be published early in August and will appear on the website http://hastingschess.org.uk

Events schedule is as follows: The Premier Tournament will run from 28th December 2002 to 5th January 2003. It will be an all-play-all event for 10 invited players.

The Challengers Tournament will also run from 28th December to 5th January. This will be a Swiss event and will provide opportunities for title norms and for FIDE ratings.

A new event this year will be an opening Weekend Congress running on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th December 2002. It will probably be in four graded sections and will comprise five games - three on Saturday and two on Sunday. Christmas Tournament will be in its usual format - participants will be divided into graded sections of about 16 players. It will run from Monday 30th December to Friday 3rd January 2003 The final Weekend Congress will run from Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th January 2003 As usual there will be six games and the event will be in four graded sections.

New Internet Correspondence Game to Begin

Beginning March 11th, 2002 the World Team will begin a new game against GM Nick de Firmian. Having most recently finished the second of two games against Chinese IM Yin Hao (WT 1.5 YH 0.5) the World Team now will play against three-time U.S. champion Nick de Firmian, who will play the white pieces.

The World Team consists of players from around the World, many of whom came together for the first time during the Kasparov vs. World Internet Game held in 1999. The games against Yin Hao attracted players from Brazil, Canada, England, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland and the United States.

Everyone willing to follow the rules of the game is welcome to play in this new game against GM de Firmian. To participate or observe go to the World Team strategy board and official site at
