2) Dortmund International Tournament
---------------------------------

An exciting category 17 tournament started on Friday in Germany.
One notable absentee is Yusupov who presumably is involved in
Anand's preparations to take on Kasparov in New York in September.

My thanks to Otto Borik of Schach Magazin 64 for the gamescores
from this event.

3) Polka Chess Tournament. Info from Tasc Tournament Systems
--------------------------------------------------------

In spite of a spirited fightback in the final 2 rounds from
the veterans the women won this Scheveningen style tournament
(sponsored by The Association Max Euwe, the idea of Joop van Oosterom.)
The final score was 26.5 to 23.5 to the ladies.

Joop van Oosterom has some very interesting idea's in promoting
chess. He sponsors matches which help Dutch players (such
as the Piket-Timman match later this year) and also pioneers
new formats such as the Melody Amber Blindfold/Rapidplay events
and the Sicilian Theme Tournament. This Veterans vs Women event
has been another of his successful ideas. The players tend to
be well matched and the results are always open to doubt. It
is always nice to see the oldtimers go through their paces.

I must once against stress my thanks to Tasc Tournament Systems
for providing me with all the games in a timely fashion, its
a pleasure to have these things in a ready to use format. In
particular to Eric van der Schilden who was operating the
electronic boards there and to my cheerful mailman Marc Derksen.

4) UNIVERSE OPEN CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY TSODIKOV
-------------------------------------------------

                                by Sam Sloan

Not to be outdone by the World Open Chess Championship taking place this
Fourth of July weekend in Philadelphia, the San Francisco Bay Area hosted the
First Annual open chess championship of the entire universe, held in San
Mateo, California.

However, the tournament organizers apparently failed to consider the fact
that someone might organize an open chess championship of the cosmos, thereby
taking into consideration the possibility that there might be other universes
within this cosmos in which chess is also played. Nevertheless, there can be
no doubt that the chess championship of the universe is greater than the mere
chess championship of the world.

On such an auspicious occasion, the quality of the play measured up,
particularly with a sparkling "out of this world" miniature victory by recent
Ukrainian emerge Rost Tsodikov, who first arrived in America in September,
1994. His opponent, Adrian Keatinge-Clay, aged 17, is, at 2282, one of the
top rated players for his age group in the U.S. Against Keatinge-Clay,
Tsodikov played a brilliant "coming from nowhere" queen sacrifice, leading to
checkmate.

Fifteen-year-old Jennie Frenklakh did not play as well as she has played in
other tournaments recently, but still she managed to gain a tie for fourth
place in the Expert Section with a score of 2.5-1.5. Frenklakh, rated 2106,
is only the second girl ever to qualify for the U.S. Cadet Championship (the
first was Anna Khan). That tournament will start in Washington, D.C. next
weekend. Among the favorites there will be Dmitry Zilberstein, 16, rated
2350, who here managed a tie for fourth in the Masters Section of the
Universe Open.

The last round in the Class "E" section featured a titanic struggle between
Jennie's 11-year-old brother, Sergey, and Jordy Mont-Reynaud's eight-year-old
sister, Mary-Jo. Jennie's brother won, but only after a long endgame
struggle. Jordy himself, who last year became the first 11-year-old ever to
gain a USCF master's rating, did not play in the Universe Open, preferring
instead to try at the lesser event being held simultaneously in Philadelphia
this weekend.

The final results were: Master Section: First, Rost Tsodikov, 3.5-.5, Second,
Walter Shipman and Mike Arne tied with 3-1, Fourth, Vladimir Mezentsev,
Guillermo Rey, Thomas Wolski, and Dmitry Zilberstein tied with 2.5-1.5.

Experts section: First, Gregory Olde 3.5-.5, Second, Frisco Del Rosario and
Richard Meamber tied with 3-1.

Here are some of the games. Be sure to look at the game between Tsodikov and
Keatinge-Clay.

In this last and final game, which does not belong in anybody's chess
database, an 8-year-old girl, rated 836, survived a Fried Liver Attack by
White, thereby proving that even eight-year-olds know a little opening theory
nowadays.

5) Bank-Hoffman-Cup
----------------

Norbert Friedrich writes

Baden-Baden (Germany)

8 invited Grandmasters (Karpov, Kortchnoi, Yusupow,
Huebner, Dautov, Kindermann, Boensch + ?) and 24 qualified
players will play 7 rounds in Knockout tournament.

6) U.S. Cadet Championship by Janice Mehler
----------------------------------------

The U.S. Cadet Championships were played July 6 - 9, 1995, at the U.S. Chess Center in
Washington, D.C. The country's top eight players under age 16 are
invited to play in the Cadet.

The final scores were:
Igor Shliperman 5.5
Dmitry Zilberstein 5
Harutyun Akopyan 5
Nawrose Nur 3.5
Jennie Frenklakh 3
Arpiar Nazarian 2.5
Charles Gelman 2.5
Vinay Bhat 1

Jennie Frenklakh was the first female participant ever in a U.S. Cadet
Championship. Vinay Bhat broke the record earlier this year in becoming
the youngest master in U.S. history.

(hopefully there will be some games next week, they were held over
due to some technical difficulties with some of the games.)

8) Tel-Aviv Rapiplay by Shay Bushinsky

IM Alex Finkel & IM Ilya Chesarsky.

9) Yalta Russia Correction
------------------------

Last week I unfortuately got the header badly wrong for the
Morozevich - Korchnoi game. It should have been:
Morozevich 0-1 Korchnoi not Korchnoi 1-0 Morozevich.

The first table is the official table, the second an unofficial
crosstable. I've missed at least one rating which I think accounts
for the differences in TPRs.

13) TELECOM ARGENTINA WIN THE FIRST "CHAMPIONSHIP CUP" by Roberto Alvarez
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Six teams took part in the First Championship Cup held in Buenos Aires,
from June 2 to 30. To qualify it was neccesary that all teams were winners of
one "company championship", or second at least. The present tournament was
organized by "Circulo de Ajedrez Industrial", a club which is devoted to
"company -team tournaments".

15) Copenhagen Open Tournament games from Under Uret /Flemming Jensen
---------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm still unsure whether this event has finished or not! I think this is probably
the final table, although I'm waiting confirmation. A number of people have pointed
out that there was a mate missed in the game Emms-Hector (move 41 and around that
area) I'm trying to check out whether this is a gamescore or player error!

16) Croyden Central International
-----------------------------

Another of Chris Dunworth's all-play-all events, the most prolific organiser
in the country at the moment. Arkell won the event and Buckley achieved the
norm target of 11 from 15. Buckley appears to have both the norm and rating
requiresments to become an IM. I understand that Richard Bates may have some
chances of a partial norm based on 11 games I believe. My thanks to Bob Wade
for the table.

There are still one or two games to be finished over the weekend.

My thanks to Steven Rix for typing in a few of the games from the event.

Many thanks to all who have sent us some tournament informations, but
we still need some help.
If you want to support us, please send infos about tournaments in your
country to niermann@math.uni-dortmund.de.

We're especially looking for tournaments in Spain this summer.

To the organizers of tournaments: It would be much easier for me, if
you could send me in addition to the announcement a short description
