1) Introduction

My thanks to Haroon or Rashid, Jovan Petronic, Laszlo Nagy, Axel Fritz, Michael Rahal. Juergen Brustkern, Korpics Zsolt, Ben Finegold, Aard Daanen, Sinisa Joksic, Ole Valaker, Lawrence Cooper and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Viswanathan Anand took first place in the Amber Rapid. Anand finished a point clear of Peter Leko and last years winner Alexander Morozevich. Kramnik doesn't seem to be quite back to his best, only one win in the rapid against tail ender Ljubojevic is a pretty astounding return. At the moment the question as to the best player seems genuinely open to debate for the first time in years. Kasparov, Kramnik, Leko and Anand could all make cases. In rapid chess both Kasparov and Kramnik have turned in surprisingly bad results recently (this event for Kramnik and the USSR vs. The Rest of the World for both) it will be interesting to see if anyone can establish themselves ahead of everyone else.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) 12th Amber Tournament

The 12th Amber Blindfold and Rapid tournament took place 15th-27th March 2003 (rest days 19th and 24th March play takes place 13:30-20:00 each day). The event was sponsored by J.J. van Oosterom and took place in the Vista Palace Hôtel in Roquebrune Cap-Martin Monaco. Prizes worth $193,250 are at stake.

Vladimir Kramnik took first place in the blindfold part of the Amber tournament. Sadly for him he did not do so well in the rapid winning only one game, in the final round, against Ljubomir Ljubojevic. The winner of the rapid was Evgeny Bareev with 8/11. Bareev struggled in the blindfold scoring just 3/11 but was undefeated in the rapid whilst scoring five wins. Half a point behind were Viswanathan Anand and Peter Leko. Anand's second place in the blindfold and the rapid took him to clear first place. Leko could have been level with him, he lost a completely won position in the penultimate round against Ljubojevic to give the Yugoslav his only win. In joint second was Alexander Morozevich whose highlight was a round 8 blindfold and rapid win against Kramnik. So Anand took the event for the third time since the event started in 1992. Previous overall winners: 2002: Alexander Morozevich, 2001: Vladimir Kramnik and Veselin Topalov, 2000: Alexei Shirov, 1999: Vladimir Kramnik, 1998: Alexei Shirov and Vladimir Kramnik, 1997: Viswanathan Anand, 1996: Vladimir Kramnik, 1995: Anatoly Karpov, 1994: Viswanathan Anand, 1993: Ljubomir Ljubojevic, 1992: Vassili Ivanchuk

10) Norwegians in Heibei, China

Ole Valaker reports: A Norwegian consisting of GM Simen Agdestein, GM Leif Erlend Johannessen, FM Espen Agdestein og FM Torstein Bae is right now on a chess tour in the middle of China.

The trip started in Han Dan and Wu An where the Norwegian were received as stars, and had to drink a lot with the mayor of the town.

This weekend the four Norwegians have played a bunch of appr. 100 chinese children, some of them very strong and talented according to Simen Agdestein. But the result was overwhelming: The children only took 4 point. Espen Agdestein won 48-0!

Monday the Norwegian tema will play a team from province Heibei, consisting of GM Zhang Zhong (the winner of Wijk an Zee 2003), GM Peng Xiaomin, GM Zhang Pengxiang and IM Wang Rui.

The teams will play both rapid and 1 hour + 30 sec increments, all together four matches in four days.

11) Viktor Davidovic Baturinsky

I've just learned of the death of Viktor Davidovic Baturinsky 27 June 1914 -22nd December 2002. Most famous for being the head of Karpov's team during the controversial 1981 World Championship match against Korchnoi.

12) 4th Millennium Chess Festival

First prize was 2500 USD 1-3 Becerra, Sherzer, Fedorowicz 4.5-0.5 (about $1400USD each) 4-8 Goldin, Ibragimov, Finegold, Blatny, Krush 4-1 ($80USD each!) Shabalov lost to Becerra in the last round to finish 3.5-1.5 Ehlvest lost in round 3 to Blatny, and Irina Krush beat Ehlvest in the last round. In round 4, Fedorowicz-Goldin 1-0, Ibragimov-Sherzer 0-1. There were 260 players in 3 sections. My wife, Kelly Finegold, although rated only 1350, scored 2-3 in the Open section. She also scored 5.5-4.5 in the blitz event winning $50USD! In the blitz, Becerra and Ehlvest tied for first with 8.5-1.5, and Ibragimov was clear third with 8-2. I did not play, I was a cheerleader for my wife instead. No games available.

Campomanes Sentenced to Jail

Former FIDE President Florencio Campomanes was sentenced to one year and 10 months imprisonment for "failure to render account on the disbursement" of the Philippine Sports Commission’s (PSC’s) funds for the June 6-25, 1992 World Chess Olympiad amounting to P12.8 million. It seems highly unlikely that Campomanes will be jailed. The case is another example of Campomanes cavalier attitude to money which saw him preside over FIDE to the point where it ran out of money. At the recent FIDE Congress he was angry to be questioned over his continued high expenses.

"Oskar-2002"

The chess community - journalists, publishers, organisers, arbiters and grandmasters who write on chess - have for over 30 years been determining the best chess-player and the Top Ten of the past year. The idea was first introduced and supported by spaniard Jorje Puch and International Association of Chess Press (AIPE). After a 7-years break the popular contest was revived by the Russian magazine "64" - Chess Review (published and edited by A.Roshal, the Chairman of FIDE CHIPS Commission).

64 invites that you offer your version of Top Ten for 2002. The one, whose prognosis turns out to be the most exact, will be honoured the title of "Prophet-2002". All the results will be published by "64" and will be available on the Internet. Websites: http://www.64.ru and http://www.chess-express.ru where you can read about the results-2002 of challengers and vote. Also you can vote by e-mail: chess@online.ru, info@joeblack.ru or by fax (095) 291 8717. Please help 64 to keep the tradition alive!
