1) Introduction

My thanks to Peter Harrison and Richard Palliser, John Fernandez, Tarjei Svensen, Adolivio Capece, Marcus, Paul Dunn, José Alberto Ferreira dos Santos, Eugeny Atarov ("64") , Vladica Andrejic, Petr Herejk, Pierre Carbonnel, Jose Mariano Acosta, Robert Sporri, Joselito Marcos, Antonio Bento, Ruslan Anisimov, Michael Atkins, Jakub Fuksik, Maurice Ashley, Stellan Brynell, Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh, Mig Greengard, Bartlomiej Macieja, Andrey Belous, Andy McFarland, Alan Luga and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Another week another World Championship "crisis". The news that the Argentine press are talking about the postponement of the FIDE Championship match in Buenos Aires from June to November is another in a long line of stories I've reported about changing venues, financial crisis and general controversy that will probably matter little in a few weeks time. What I would like to be reporting on, for the first time in TWIC's lifetime is a single undisputed champion. We will have to hope that happens sooner rather than later because chess needs order above all now. I think if we get the chance to show the strength in depth of the talent in the game at the moment throughout a full cycle chess can have a big future.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

3) Kasparov - Ponomariov Postponed?

According to Mig Greengard at his site: http://www.chessninja.com/dailydirt.htm the FIDE World Championship Kasparov - Ponomariov match scheduled for June 19th - July 7th 2003 in Buenos Aires, Argentina has run into difficulties. FIDE are still hopeful of the June date, the Argentine organisers seem to be saying the match has financial problems. November - December is supposed to be the time the FIDE World Title was to be unified with the Einstein TV title. The venue for the Einstein World title match between Kramnik and Leko has yet to be announced, even though venues are rumoured.

4) St. Petersburg Championships

The St. Petersburg Championships take place 16th-28th April 2003. Denis Yevseev leads with 7/10.

21) 3rd Oxford University Congress

The 3rd Oxford University Chess Congress took place 26th-27th April 2003.

Peter Harrison & Richard Palliser report: Once again this event at Lincoln College proved to be an enjoyable and successful event. With over fifty players it was for once the Major, and not the Minor, which turned out to be the largest section. The Open was very strong on paper with one GM and four IMs, but IM Nick Pert always led before finishing a whole point clear. However, just as impressive were the excellent performances of the University’s own Andrew Bigg and 165-graded, but fast improving, Aidan Rawlinson.

Open: 1. IM Nick Pert (Reading) 4.5/5 & £400 2=. IM Colin Crouch (Pinner), IM Robert Gwaze (Zimbabwe), Aidan Rawlinson (Croydon), Paul Georghiou (Barnet), GM Peter Wells (Abingdon) & Andrew Bigg (Oxford University) 3.5/5 & £67.00 U-190 Grading Prize: Aidan Rawlinson 2003 Oxford University Champion: Andrew Bigg

Major: 1. Will Burt (Oxford City) 4.5/5 2=. Fred Van Randen (Holland), Kok Ippel (Holland) & Tim Willinger (Oxford) 4/5 U-150 Grading Prize: Sam Buckley (Bath), John Yates (Oxford City) & Nick Burrows (Salford) 3.5/5

23) PNG Championships

Alan Luga President of PNG Chess Federation reports:

Newcomer Joselito Marcos captured the National Chess Championship held at the conference room of Airways Hotel in Port Moresby over the Easter weekend (18-21 April). Marcos, a senior lecturer at Lae Technical College, swept through undefeated, conceding only one draw to score 7.5 points out of eight games. He is now the proud custodian of the K.R. Mitchell perpetual championship trophy.

The competition drew a record number of 34 participants, all from the capital city, except the new champion who came from Lae. Six-time champion Stuart Fancy, proprietor of Industrial Sales and Services, was first runner-up with 7.0 points, followed by Mark Aiio, a 1992 Manila Olympiad veteran with 6.0. Just behind them were Joseph Aoae, Gerard Awai, and Aisi Vere, with 5.5 points each. Marcos and Fancy had a perfect score of 5.0 apiece before they faced off in the sixth round. Their exciting duel of wits arising from a French Defense provided the tournament's highlight as the two rivals appeared to be evenly matched. But in middle-game skirmishes, Marcos decided to jettison two pawns to unleash a ferocious kingside attack that the defending champion could not fend off.

The remaining two games proved anti-climactic as Marcos scored a crisp win before allowing a draw to clinch his victory. In his speech at the prize-giving ceremony, the PNG Chess Federation president, Mr Alan Luga, thanked the 34 contestants for taking part in the championship. He asked them to encourage others to play chess as an intellectual game so that "Papua New Guineans can have real chances of winning medals for the country in international competitions like the chess Olympiad."
