A nice mixture of events this week with the Sigeman and Karpov tournaments headlining. Maurice Ashley's Generation Chess International which introduced severe financial penalties for draws before move 50 was an interesting experiment. The event seems to have been a success and further events are planned. It would be interesting to see how it would work in a Category 16 or 17 event.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

Santurtzi, a small Basque town near Bilbao (Spain) was the venue (May 1st-3rd.) of a very original match. The Basque team (GM Felix Izeta, GM JL Fernandez and IM Mario Gomez) will play a total of nine games (three blindfold, three advanced chess and three rapid [50 min. + 5 sec/move], three games each day) against Viswanathan Anand, Judit Polgar and Anatoli Karpov. According to the Town Council, the main sponsor, "the idea is a combination of the sporting, cultural and spectacular sides of chess".
Pablo Sierra reports: According to Spanish newspaper "Marca", Anatoly Karpov has talked during the Basque Team vs. Polgar, Anand & Karpov that this year another Russia vs. Rest of the World match will take place in September in Monaco with the best Russian players vs. the best of the Rest of the World.

The Generation Chess International Tournament took place in the Marshall Chess Club, New York City USA April 23rd - May 2nd 2003. The event had in place a rule where draw offers couldn't be made before move 50 (The penalty for taking premature draws is 10% of the GMs' appearance fee and 10% of prizes won.
Eric Schiller adds some comments about the event. Eugene Perelshteyn earned a norm after a blistering 5.5/6 start. Irina Krush had more than one chance in the last round to wrap up her 2nd GM norm, but missed the winning moves. Also that the rules reduced the number of draws tremendously. Personally, I consider this experiment historic, no doubt the most important event of 2003 so far. If the Maurice Ashley rules are adopted widely, spectator interest in chess will be expanded. The 50 move rule really affected the way the games were played, too. Forcing young players to play endgames saw many go down in flames. Many "boring" positions became quite interesting.
