1) Introduction

My thanks to Andy McFarland, Antonio Rosino, Rodolfo Arias, Eirik T. Gullaksen, Oliver Kniest, John Fernandez, Mihajlo Savic, Vladimir Dvorkovich, Laszlo Nagy, Davide Cortese, Felix Vaisman, Nguyen Phuoc Trung, Gabor Pali, RR Vasudevan, Eric van Reem, Miklos Orso, Frank Quisinsky and everyone else who helped with the issue.

I've always been an admirer of Evgeny Bareev's play. For a number of years he struggled to get the invitations that his talent warrented but this seemed to turn around with a good performance at the FIDE Championships in Moscow in 2001 followed by a win in Wijk aan Zee as a late replacement for Garry Kasparov. Its been mostly good news for him since then. In second was Michael Adams who has been losing rating points steadily over the last year and will surely welcome this good result. Boris Gelfand and Judit Polgar will also take points away from the event. Teen star Teimour Radjabov, Vladimir Akopian and Viktor Korchnoi (who struggled with the clock an old story for him) all lost significant points.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Enghien-les-Bains

The bottom four players lost rating points especially Vladimir Akopian.

6) First Saturday June

The FS June events took place 7th-19th June 2003. There are GM, IM and two FM sections. My thanks to Laszlo Nagy and arbiter Gabor Pali.

David Vigorito got his 3rd and final IM norm. He will just need to gain a little less than 20 rating points for the title. I got one of the names wrong in the IM event so I give all the games again from that event.

18) Alvise Zichichi 1938-2003

IM, International Arbiter, former Italian Champion (absolute, Senior, Rapid) and former Presidente of Italian Chess Federation Alvise Zichichi died Saturday 21st June 2003 of a stroke.

Antonio Rosino writes: Alvise Zichichi (born Milano 4th July 1938) died suddenly in Rome Saturday 21st June 2003. Never a professional chess player he was a (now retired) manager of "Banco di Roma". He was nevertheless the most important personality in Italian chess in recent decades. He became an IM in 1977, Italian champion in 1985 and International Arbiter in 1979. He was also the organizer of the series of "Banco di Roma" tournaments and chief of "Banco di Roma chess team". He was president of FSI (Italian Chess Federation) from 1996 to the end of 2002, making a great and successful effort to give new life to Italian chess. Zichichi was a good chess journalist and chess writer: his two books "Esteban Canal" (1991) and "Lezioni di scacchi" (1993) had a deserved success in Italy.

London Chess Set Exhibition

Sergei Karjakin, the youngest Grandmaster in chess history, will fly to London from the Ukraine to play an Exhibition Tournament with 12 year old David Howell from Eastbourne, on Saturday 28 June 2003 to celebrate the opening of The Art of Chess at the Gilbert Collection. This exhibition match, using giant chess pieces, will take place at 11am in the Edmond J Safra Courtyard of Somerset House, Strand, London WC2.

The Art of Chess will feature nineteen chess sets designed by artists in the last hundred years that demonstrate the interaction between chess and modern art. Each set illustrates a move in the apocryphal last game played by Napoleon with General Bertrand on St Helena in 1820. In the starting position is the world's only known set designed by Carl Fabergé, specially made circa 1905 for Tsar Nicolas II's Commander in Chief of the Russo-Japanese War, General Alexei Kouropatkin. Visitors can then follow the game through the porcelain designs of the Lomonosov State Porcelain Factory in Russia in the 1920s - the 'Propaganda' chess set with Capitalists versus Communists - to Marcel Duchamp's Buenos Aires chess set of 1919, and the geometric designs of the Bauhaus set by Josef Hartwig. There is also a set created by leading Fluxist artist Yoko Ono, as well as five especially commissioned new designs by Damien Hirst, Yayoi Kusama, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Paul McCarthy and Maurizio Cattelan, the latter being laid out as the final move - checkmate.
