1) Introduction

My thanks to Eirik T. Gullaksen, Andy McFarland, John Fernandez, Ard van Beek, Bronislav Chmeliek, Miklos Orso, Richard Palliser, Igor Glek, Ole Valaker, Giorgio Gozzi, Lars Grahn, "Bob", Juergen Daniel, John Henderson, Laszlo Nagy, Gabor Pali and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Its been a good week for Luke McShane, he completed victory in the Greenland Open with 8.5/9 and has started with 3/4 to share first with Krishnan Sasikiran just before half way of the North Sea Cup.

The application to go into administration by Einstein TV probably marks the end of their involvement in chess. Its now up to Vladimir Kramnik and Peter Leko to find a sponsor for their title match and clear the way for reunification.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

9) World Open

The 31st World Open took place in Philadelphia June 28th - July 6th 2003. There were many different schedules before they combined for the final rounds. $180,000 guaranteed prizes. There were 37GMs. 10 players Ilya Smirin, Alex Onischuk, Leonid Yudasin, Jaan Ehlvest, Alexander Goldin, Alexander Shabalov, Alek Wojtkiewicz, Gennadi Zaitshik, Nazar Firman and Babakouly Annakov all finished on 7/9, in terms of the prizefund they effectively shared first. I have made an assumption that the tournament ran from 30th June - 6th July with two rounds on Saturday and two on Sunday in dating the games, with the different time schedules the task of getting the exact right date for the games is too time consuming. There should be more games next week.

The 13th and final Smith & Williamson Young Masters takes place again at the excellent venue of Millfield School, Somerset from 9th-17th July. The center of the city is full of music (folk, jazz, rock....), (street)theatre and culture and most events are completely free! Most events take place during the evenings and nights, when the chess games are finished. One warning when you intent to win a prize: Belgian beer is rather strong....
