1) Introduction

My thanks to Antonio Bento, Luis Scalise, Adolivio Capece, Jonathan Berry, Richard Palliser, Stephen Boyd, Roland Pokorny, Peter Gubics, Roberto Alvarez, Miklos Orso, Herman Van Riemsdijk, Mircea Pavlov, Jakub Fuksik, Lars Hansen, Thomas Henrich, John Fernandez, Diego Sartorio, Mary Vigliraki, Guenther Van den Bergh, Tadeusz Baranowski, Junior Tay, Leon Gofshtein, Yin Hao, Kaspars Migla, Mig Greengard and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The main event of the Biel International Chess Festival started with a typically wild but not necessarily sound Morozevich win. Kasparov has been in the news with further news of his match against Ponomariov which seems to be moving closer to happening although it is still not 100% certain. He has been promoting the first volume of his book "My Great Predecessors". With the arrival of the summer a huge amount of chess is being played throughout Europe and this issue reflects that.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

3) Ponomariov - Kasparov match

On July 10th the Interfax News Agency reported: "Ukraine's President Leonid Kuchma has signed an order for the organisation of a chess match for the World Title between Ruslan Ponomarev (Ukraine) and Garry Kasparov (Russia) in Yalta in September-October 2003." This has now been confirmed by FIDE (http://www.fide.com/news.asp?id=210). The match will take place in Yalta starting 19 September 2003. The opening moves will be made by President Vladimir Putin of Russia and President Leonid Kuchma of Ukraine and will happen alongside the CIS Congress. Although I understand contracts with the players may have not been signed yet.

4) Kasparov Interview by Mig Greengard

On July 14 Garry Kasparov gave a discussion and book signing for his new book "My Great Predecessors, Part I" at a Barnes & Noble bookstore in New York City. After the signing he took questions from the audience. A transcript is below, followed by further comments on his upcoming FIDE match with Ponomariov and his match with Fritz that was just announced.

23) 26th Open del Vallès

Herman van Riemsdijk reports: The 26th edition of the Open del Vallès was held in Barberà del Vallès, Catalunya, from July 6th-13th 2003. 42 players from 9 countries played the main group. I had played this nice tournament already 4 times but in this edition I was asked by the organizers to be the arbiter instead. At the end first prize went to GM Moskalenko, after the progressive tie-break system had be counted after the last round. Argentinian Marcelo Panelo made an IM norm.

Final Round games now available plus a game from Josep Ridameya, who won the special 60+ prize and completed his 74th birthday during the tournament. He played his first Spanish final in the early sixties.
