1) Introduction

My thanks to Primoz Kokalj, Thierry Foissez, Zsolt Korpics, George D. Alexopoulos, Manfred Rosenboom, Jack Peters, Hans Groffen, Leon Gofshtein, Jussi Tella, Korpics Zsolt, Primoz Kokalj, Vladimir Dvorkovich, Thierry Foissez, Bill O'Rourke, David Cohen, Albert Silver, Christian Leimand, Franz Jittenmeier, Sergey Bystrov, Jorgen Elfstrom, Ali Nihat Yazici, Rich Fireman, Georges Bertola, Phillip Simpkins, Casper Dahl Rasmussen, Sinia Joksic, Roberto Alvarez and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Alexander Morozevich won the Category XVI main Biel tournament. He followed it with a fascinating interview with the organisers. He revealed that he didn't regard himself as a professional anymore "I got tired of the lack of any reasonable prospects in the chess world. What are the goals for a professional player? There is no more clear system, no real cycle of world championships, no clear world champion and thus no possibility for the players to fight for a world title. I don’t see any innovative ideas coming to change this dead-lock. I cannot believe in any real change. That’s why I study chess less and less at home. Only some hours per week, no more than four or five." Similar things were said by Gata Kamsky before he left the game. The current situation is intollerable and truely competitive world championships needs to happen and happen soon. Assuming the Kasparov - Ponomariov match takes place (date and place set, finance is "expected") then I don't think the game can wait a lot longer for Leko and Kramnik to find an acceptable offer for their match. The World Championships is the place players make and break their reputations, the lack of one is having a corrosive effect on the game.

Overlapping by one round with Biel is the new Dortmund tournament. Interestingly at an early stage the only qualifier Viktor Bologan leads with 4/5. A lesson in merit based invitation?

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

18) Davos Open

The "Swiss Chess Tour 2003" continues in Davos in the 2nd "Sunstar Park Hotel Open", August 2nd- 10th 2003. 9 round Swiss - timerate 40 moves for 2 hours and 60 minutes till the end.

Internet coverage: http://www.beochess.ch/

Sinisa Joksic reports: After Biel I am in Davos (July 2nd to 10th) as arbiter. The place is beautiful, hotel high class, food excellent and conditions for play extremely good. Very nice tournament, unfortunately with only 38 players. I hope the tournament will survive. It will be a pity if chess and chess players lost so good place. Chess rate were here 78 one bed, 68 double bed and 50 SF youth rate. You can't find that in Switzerland especially in an exclusive place like Davos! 38 players, 3 GM, 7 IM, 3 FM, 12 nations. 9 rounds, swiss system, tempo 40 moves 2 hours and one hour to complete the games. There were a lot of surprises. Petra Schuurman won against GM Cebalo in a good game, IM Rukavina has lost two games. Vogt and Antoniewski, lost half points against Vulevic and Zesinger.

21) Southern California Championship

Jack Peters reports: The Southern California Championship took place in Costa Mesa, about 50 miles south of Los Angeles, on the weekends of July 18-20 and July 26-27. This year the tournament, an eight-player round robin since its inception in 1989, expanded to 10 players in the hope of fulfilling the requirements for an international title tournament. The effort failed because only two of the players represent foreign federations. Levon Altounian and Andranik Matikozyan shared first place with impressive scores of 7-2. Altounian again demonstrated the strength of an IM, but he still needs an opportunity to make his final norm. Maybe next year.

23) Liepajas rokade

Liepajas rokade took place 31st July - 3rd August 2003. Favourite Alexander Khalifman won the rapid event ahead of Daniel Fridman both scoring 8.5/11. There will be no games made available. Reportedly a number of players including the obvious suspect objected and the organisers weren't interested, seems quite crazy to me.

British Charity Simul Record attempt in Manchester

An attempt to break the British Record for simultaneous Chess will be made on Saturday August 9th 2003, in the Sugden Sports Centre in Manchester. The Scottish Grandmaster Jonathan Rowson will attempt to break the British record for the number of Chess games played simultaneously. You can be one of his opponents. TV, radio and newspaper coverage is expected at the attempt. The current record stands at 142 and was set in December 1956. All proceeds from this record attempt will support Kirsty's appeal to secure Francis House Children's Hospice in Didsbury. 150 chess players are needed to be part of this historic occasion and at the same time to help the Kirsty Appeal. Everyone who takes part will be encouraged to find sponsorship from friends and family to help the appeal. Little Kirsty Howard was born with her heart back to front. Kirsty is the face of the charity appeal formed in her name. She has become a major celebrity since she walked onto the pitch at Old Trafford hand in hand with her hero David Beckham and she stole the hearts of millions when, reunited with Beckham, she handed the final baton to Her Majesty the Queen at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games. Kirsty was given six weeks to live three years ago. She continues to defy medical prognosis and is an inspiration to everyone she meets. Kirsty's target is to raise £5 million total for Francis House, of which £2,139,127 has been raised to date. This record-breaking attempt is being organized by the Mind Sports Olympiad. For information about the Mind Sports Olympiad visit http://www.msoworld.com.
