1) Introduction

My thanks to Jean Pechine, Igor Glek, Bartlomiej Macieja, Leonid Gofshtein, Mogens Nielsen, John Fernandez, Emil Anka, Colin MacKenzie, Franz Jittenmeier, Argiris Kotsis, Andy McFarland, Mihajlo Savic, Rod McShane, Léo Battesti, George Mirijanian, Emil Sutovsky, Peter Sowray, Arthur Brameld, Richard Furness, Juan Manuel González, John Henderson and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The Cap D'Agde tournament has proved an extremely competitive affair in the opening stages with tight groups stages producing a very strong quarter final lineup. Kasparov's visit to the London Chess Centre produced a big crowd and sales of his new book. The World Junior Championships are underway and the FIDE Congress will take place along side it.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Cap D'Agde

6th National and International Chess Encounters World Rapid Chess Championship organised by CCAS in Cap d'agde 23rd-30th October 2003. CCAS is Caisse Centrale d'Activités Sociales des Electriciens et Gaziers de France (EDF-GDF), the national company for Gas and Electricity.

16 World Class GMs among them 11 of the 12 top rated players will fight for the world crown. Each player will have 25 minutes + 10 seconds per played move. This means games that will last at most between 50 minutes to 1 hour.

After the group stages the top four from each group qualified for the quarter finals of the knockout. Today saw Kramnik - Polgar (Kramnik won 2-0) and Ponomariov - Anand (is taking place as I write - game 1 was drawn). Tuesday sees Bacrot - Grischuk and Topalov - Svidler.

The average rating will be 2726 ELO points, which makes this world rapid chess championship the strongest of all time.

3) 4NCL starts

The 4NCL started over the weekend of 18th-19th October 2003.

Part of report from the official site: Division 1 is headed by title-holders Wood Green 1 and Betsson.com, both with 2 wins from the weekend. Betsson.com will be particularly pleased with their round 2 victory over strongly fancied Guildford-ADC 1. A remarkable match saw 8 decisive games, with the top 4 boards won by the black pieces, and a final result of 5-3 in favour of Betsson.com. It was a difficult weekend for some of the Division 1 teams who had players away competing in the European Team Championship in Bulgaria. Slough 1 particularly suffered and are currently at the foot of the table.

My thanks to Richard Furness, Peter Sowray and Arthur Brameld (for the games).

The event is in Cleveland OH. The Cleveland Public Library’s John G. White Chess and Checkers Collection is currently exhibiting an installation titled, Worlds of Chess Champions. This temporary exhibition is located in the third floor exhibition hall of the Main Building, 325 Superior Ave., N.E. The Library exhibition is free and open to the public. Worlds of Chess Champions puts chess into context through the lives of chess experts, authors, and champions.
