1) Introduction

My thanks to Andy McFarland, Rod McShane, David Llada, John Donaldson, Steve Laios, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Lanfranco Bombelli, Jacques Robrecht, Miklos Orso, Larry Holmes, Carsten Hensel, George Mirijanian, Gabor Pali, Emil Anka, John Fernandez and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Yet again Kasparov is capturing the headlines with a match against a computer. The match has seen drama with Kasparov blundering badly in game two and then winning in almost textbook anti-computer style in game three. No wonder the sponsors keep coming back for more. Its a shame from my point of view that at least some of this attention isn't pointed towards a real live World Championships series.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Kasparov vs Fritz X3D match

Kasparov takes on an X3D version of Fritz in a match in New York 11th-18th November 2003. Kasparov drew with Deep Junior in January. Kasparov is using 3D glasses to see a the 3D Board generated by Fritz.

The event has been a media success so far with plenty of interest worldwide. Kasparov had white in game 1 and although he won the exchange he didn't get any winning chances. Game 2 saw an interesting Kings Indian style position emerge from a Ruy Lopez. From a slightly inferior position Kasparov gradually seemed to have the better of it before blundering a pawn to a two mover that collapsed his whole position. In game 3 Kasparov got an entirely locked position which was ideal for a human to play and exposed the computer's weakness. Kasparov took extreme care in building up a winning position, the game ended on move 45. The final game will be on Tuesday.

The site http://x3dchess.com/ will again be promoting the event. Kasparov has played high profile matches against Karpov and Junior for the company before.

3) KB Rapid Match

Bent Larsen and Fridrik Olafsson played an 8 game rapid match in Reykjavic 11th-14th November 2003. Olafsson beat Larsen 5-3. The match, sponsored by the Kaupthing Bank, continues with two rounds per evening commencing at 20.00 Icelandic time.

The pair first played an historic 8 game match in Reykjavik in 1956 when both were 20 years old. In that match Larsen led 3.5-1.5 before Olafsson came back to level the match by winning games 6 and 7. Larsen won a final tense game to take the match 4.5-3.5. (Incidently ChessBase Megabase has this match as being in Oslo 1955 which was the date and venue of the Scandanavian Championships. The match was the playoff the following year in Reykjavic after the two players tied. There is an account of the match in Larsen's own book of selected games.)

My thanks to Rod McShane for the news.
