1) Introduction

My thanks to Roman M. Parparov, Adaucto Wanderley da Nobrega, Sandor Biro, John Saunders, John Hillery, Vadim Milov, Laszlo Nagy, John Farrell, John Fernandez, Marco Schumacher, Chris Bird, Jakub Fuksik and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The FIDE Championships in Tripoli, Libya have reached their quarter final stages with the only two real major eliminations, that of Nigel Short by Michal Krasenkow and that was after the Briton dropped a rook when pressing for a win and the notoriously gifted but occasionally fragile Vassily Ivanchuk. The controversy that won't go away for FIDE is the absense of Israeli players and the near absense of Jewish players in the event. Whilst officially they said Visas would be granted to players with Israeli passports most decided not to test whether they could go. Vadim Milov was the only one who actually attempted to go and now says he will sue FIDE as he was effectively blocked from competing. It will be interesting to see what happens, especially if the case goes to the court of arbitration for sport.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) FIDE Championship in Tripoli

The FIDE Championships take place in Tripoli 18th June - 13th July 2004. The time control for the first 40 moves is 90 minutes followed by 15 minutes until the end of the game with a time increment of 30 seconds per move from move one. If playoffs are required then firstly there are a pair of rapid games (25 minutes + 10 secs a move), then if needed a pair of blitz games (5 minutes + 10 seconds per move) followed finally by a sudden death game (White has 6 minutes black Black 5 minutes, black has draw odds.).

The favourites for the event have generally advanced to the Quarter Finals. Nigel Short fell to Michal Krasenkow in round 2 after dropping his rook deep into the endgame simply placing it on an attacked square. In round 3 Vassily Ivanchuk went out to Rustam Kasimdzhanov in the rapids. White won all the games in game one of the quarter finals.

15) Vadim Milov Open Letter

There are no Israeli players competing in the championship. It was thought that Vadim Milov who now represents Switzerland would play but he makes it clear that he believes that as an Israeli passport holder FIDE made sure he could not compete.

Message on the ACP site at: http://www.chess-players.org/eng/news/viewarticle.html?id=169

Vadim Milov: I'm going to sue Fide for failing to fullfil their obligations and for forcing me to miss the World Championship!

ACP Board [Sat Jun 26th, 01:20]

Dear chess colleagues,

Although I signed the contract and agreed to play in the World Championship in Libya, I was excluded from this tournament only because of my possession of the Israeli passport. Fide has done everything possible for me to miss this tournament. They sent me the invitation too late (on Friday 18th of June), which was the arrival day and I already physically couldn't get the plane to Tripoli.

I think all chessplayers have had enough of Fide's lies. I'm going to sue Fide for failing to fullfil their obligations and for forcing me to miss the World Championship.

Vadim Milov Biel, Switzerland June 25th, 2004
