1) Introduction

My thanks to Jonathan Berry, Roberto Alvarez, Marina Heredero Fuster, Emmanuel Variniac, Wantiez Fabrice, Miklós Orsó, Jon Levitt, Jakub Fuksik, Jason Luchan, Anatoly Lisenko, Richard Bérubé, Hans Groffen, Dr. Hesham Elgendy, Reimund Lutzenberger, Eldar Mukhametov, Gerard van Otten, David Clayton, Hassan Khaled, Igor Glek and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Summer continues with more open tournaments of various flavours. Jonathan Rowson won the British Championship without the need of a playoff to become the first Scottish winner since 1946. The Bobby Fischer saga continues with the news that he may try to marry in Japan to avoid being sent back to the US.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) 8th Hogeschool Zeeland Tournament

The 8th Hogeschool Zeeland Tournament took place in Vlissingen August 7th-14th 2004. Top seed GM Krishnan Sasikiran (India) won the 8th Hogeschool Zeeland Tournament in Vlissingen by beating World champion Rustam Kasimdzhanov (relegating him to a disappointing 6/9.) in the last round. Shared first place also for Dutch GM Sergey Tiviakov and the 17-year old Dutch talent IM Daniel Stellwagen who managed to make his final GM norm. There was also a IM norm for Dutch WGM Tea Lanchava. My thanks to Hans Groffen.

3) 91st Smith & Williamson British Championships

The 91st Smith & Williamson British Championships took place 1st - 14th August in the Spa Complex, Scarborough,Yorkshire. Jonathan Rowson dominated throughout and even though a loss to Peter Wells in round 8 put his victory in doubt allowing the field to catch him he was always likely to have an easier run in than his rivals. Rowson became the first Scottish player to win the British Championship since RF Combe in 1946.
