1) Introduction

My thanks to Slaven Juric, Tzachi Slav, Valery Maes, Yochanan Afek, Rodolfo Arias Formoso, Miklos Orso, Greg Shahade, Ching Kim Lye, Jakub Fuksik, Goran Tomic, Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh, Ian Rogers and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Veselin Topalov duly won the FIDE World Championship in San Luis Argentina. The leader with 6.5/7 at the half way stage he drew his remaining games to finish 1.5 points clear of the field. He will be rated 2801 in the January rating list provided he doesn't play the rest of the year. Excluding the retired Garry Kasparov he should be world number one. Kasparov's retirement has allowed chess to start to move on, his colossal status was a real barrier to progress. No-one can compete with what he achieved. That's not to say that like Lasker he shouldn't return to play regular tournaments, I hope he does. Topalov is a worthy champion and hopefully he'll be able to start to build a fine record as champion also. The question of Kramnik's status and the title he won from Kasparov is still open. FIDE and Topalov's manager say they're open to offers but with a credible format FIDE have put Kramnik in a difficult position as his form has declined alarmingly in the last year. Interesting and hopeful times.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) FIDE World Championship

The FIDE Championship took place September 27th - October 16th 2005 at Potrero de los Funes, San Luis (Argentina). Players: Rustam Kasimdzhanov, Michael Adams, Peter Leko, Vishy Anand, Veselin Topalov, Alexander Morozevich, Peter Svidler, and Judit Polgar. Veselin Topalov after a stellar 6.5/7 start won the event by drawing the remaining games and is the new FIDE World Chess Champion.

Topalov has been the player of the year with this round things off nicely. He started with 3rd at Wijk aan Zee followed by 2nd on tie-break to Kasparov at Linares (a conventional tie-break might have had him in first place but then perhaps Kasparov would not have lost the final round game). In both these events he produced some tremendous chess but both times lost odd games (two at Wijk and one at Linares) where he played comparitively poorly, something he managed to cut out here. Topalov then finished 1st in the MTEL Masters, his best result and 2nd at Dortmund.

Topalov has a fine second in 19 year old Ivan Cheperinov who clearly has had an input into Topalov's opening ideas. With Kasparov, Anand and Kramnik leading the way, modern preparation of openings with databases and computers has reached a high level, one that many others of lesser ability have been able to emulate. The idea that you prepare an opening with the best moves and at worst you get a draw has dominated recent years and has inevitably led to an increase of drawn, contentless games, with the same openings being studied to death. Topalov can of course do this but he has also prepared openings where complexity and mutual play (which he has analysed) dominate. He doesn't try to play unsoundly but is prepared to take inferior positions with possibilities when the situation demands it. Hence more wins and more complexity. Perhaps he looked at Morozevich's hot streaks and asked himself how come Morozevich can demolish players outside the top ten supposed better players can't? This is the way forward, along with I think, players having a greater variety of opening systems at their disposal. The days of just playing 1.e4 with the Petroff around I think are numbered for players with serious pretentions of success.

Veselin Topalov's triumph in San Luis promises to be the real start of the post-Kasparov era. Kasparov's retirement opened the way to the all-play-all double round robin tournament that is looking like the future of World Championship Chess.

In consultation with Kasparov FIDE had set up a following cycle of matches followed by a World Title Match. In theory this would be the best way to settle the title, in practice, there is neither the time nor the money in modern chess for such a system. FIDE's other solution, the knockout tournament failed to catch the public's imagination and I personally disliked its theme of chess by the yard at the expense of quality. A San Luis style tournament every two years is in my view a sustainable and credible system and given the chaos especially since Kasparov lost his match to Kramnik in 2000 a welcome showcase for chess. Word is that FIDE are going to do just that after the success of this event.

Veselin Topalov has thrown his weight behind the new system believing it to be fair. As to Kramnik, he is in a difficult position. When he beat Leko to defend his title in Brissago in he seemed to be in the strong position with FIDE completely unable to get anything off the ground whilst he defended to a credible opponent. Since then illness and poor results have meant that his ranking has plummeted to 7 in the world. Whilst Silvio Danailov (Topalov's manager) and FIDE President Kirsan Iljumzhinov seemed open to the idea of a match between Kramnik and Topalov, Topalov himself seems to be against the idea stressing that Kramnik was invited to San Luis and his current bad rating.

Danailov: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=2684

Topalov (both in russian): http://news.sport-express.ru/online/ntext/10/nl104053.html and http://sport.km.ru/news/view.asp?id=5457E9994B14483D96C1877425466D94

In any case most of Kramnik's potential opponents are tied up in contracts by FIDE forbidding them to play him in a world title match. A match with FIDE's blessing against Topalov may still be possible with potentially good money for all involved. But it seems November 2006 or nothing because I think the new system has to be given a chance to work and loose ends have to be tied up by September/October 2007 when the next event should take place. If FIDE makes this a regular thing I can see Kramnik's title becoming irrelevant.

Topalov will be world number two behind the retired Kasparov until the latter's rating runs out after he hasn't played for a year. His form in San Luis suggests that he can kick on and perhaps establish himself as number one for a few years and even overhaul Kasparov's ELO rating, in fact with an extra win he might have done this in San Luis but one target at a time was enough for him.

That said I believe that Kramnik's quality as a chess player will make it highly likely he can put together some results to push him right to the top of the rankings.

The bottom line is we need one champion and one cycle, there simply isn't enough money for chess for two. A real cycle will promote better chess also as players prepare seriously for an event they can count on taking place.

They do need to work on a credible way of qualifying for the championship. Four of the eight places are taken up with the top four in San Luis which seems too many in the long term but fine for a first go. The idea of a world cup qualifier and then a final chance tournament is not the way I'd do it but probably will work OK. The point is to have a simple cycle which has a chance to take place.

FIDE are to be congratulated on getting the players and organising this event. More please.
