1) Introduction

My thanks to Lou Caruana, Gary Suffield, Leonid Galperin, Haroon I.A., Laszlo Nagy, Dmitry V. Borisenkov, Tarjei J. Svensen, Randall Hough, Doru Ionescu, István Almási and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Sergei Rublevsky had a terrible Olympiad for the Russians scoring just 2/5 on the bottom board. He's putting that result behind him in the best possible way with a 6.5/9 score with two rounds to go in the Aerosvit GM tournament in Foros/Yalta. He is half a point clear of Vassily Ivanchuk and both have 2800+ results so far. Magnus Carlsen attracts huge amounts of interest because of his potential. He has started the Midnight Sun Chess Challenge with 3/3 and it has also been announced he'll play the Norwegian Championship that follows that event.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

15th Kavala Open

The 15th Kavala Open takes place 4th-11th August 2006. There is one (traditional) Open Tournament, which is at the same time the Greek Championships. This year they decided to form two groups with very low elo players competing separately, so as not to create great elo differences and discourage high-ranked players from participating (and being paired with a 1400 player, when a game loss, or draw might mean an "elo catastrophy") on a swiss tournament such as this one. This separation of low elos and the bigger ones is done for the first time in Greece, previously all competed in one tournament. The 1st group players will be eligible for Greek Open titles in men's and women's competitions.

Entries must be sent by fax to + 30.2510.226871 or by e-mail : vliog@tee.gr, not later than July 24th and should include full name, ELO Rating, telephone and dates of arrival and departure. Telephone communication : Vassilis Liogkas : +30.2510.622370 and 6977474684
