1) Introduction

My thanks to Tarjei J. Svensen, Goran Urosevic, Thomas Henrich, Mogens Nielsen, Ching Kim Lye, Doug Bake, Frits Agterdenbos, Frank Quisinsky, Emmanuel Variniac, George Mirijanian, Lou Caruana and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The Aerosvit GM tournament finished with a bit of a whimper with all but one game being drawn in the final two rounds. All of which suited Sergei Rublevsky who won the event with 7.5/9 and a performance over 2800. The new rating list for July showed the damage of his Olympiad and other performances as he lost 20 points but this will do quite a bit to repair the damage. The list sees Veselin Topalov consolidate his number one spot and indeed overtake Garry Kasparov's last rating of 2812 by a point. Apart from that the main stories are surely about the new generation of chess players. 24 year old Levon Aronian continues his rise as he added points to bring him closer to number two Viswanathan Anand. There are also two players born in 1990 rising fast up the list, Sergey Karjakin at 27 in the world and Magnus Carlsen at 34 they are so far ahead of their contemporaries that the next youngest in the top 100 were born in 1987 and they are numbers three and four in the whole junior list also behind Teimour Radjabov and Pentala Harikrishna (born in 1987 and 1986 respectively). The summer is here in Europe and no doubt we'll start to see more and more holiday events.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

4) FIDE Rating List July 2006

Just one rating list after taking top spot in the world after Kasparov's retirement meant that his rating became inactive Veselin Topalov has now exceeded Kasparov's final rating of 2812. He added 9 points after winning the MTel Masters in Sofia. Viswanathan Anand lost a few rating points at that event and a lot at the Olympiad where he managed only 50%. The rise of Levon Aronian the youngest player in the top 10 and the only player born in the 1980s continues as he gained 21 points in the period with his performances inthe Russian Team Championships and the Olympiad. Vladimir Kramnik's return at the Olympiad gained him 14 points and projects him back to number four in the world. Michael Adams returns to the top 10 gaining 12 points. Poor recent form has lost Ruslan Ponomariov 17 points and he drops from 6 to 13. Shakhriyaz Mamedyarov gained 23 points to rise to 12 in the world. David Navarra rises even further from 50 to 14 in the world after gaining a massive 61 points. Gata Kamsky's Olympiad and MTel performances means that he gains 26 points. Sergey Karjakin rises from 45 to 27 in the world, and his rival Magnus Carlsen from 63 to 34, both were born in 1990, after them the youngest players in the top 100 were born in 1987. Gabriel Sargissian is the top re-entry into the list rising from 2612 to 2667. Another surprise was FM Vladimir Afromeev's entry into the list with a rating of 2620 gaining 62 points from only 14 games to become the only non-GM in the list, especially surprising as he was born in 1954. 2619 is the mark to get into the top 100. It is surely well beyond the time to change the mark at which a GM norm is set (2600) which is a performance which clearly wouldn't get you anywhere near the top 100 (when it was originally set it was a performance of Candidates class which is now probably over 2700).

15th Kavala Open

The 15th Kavala Open takes place 4th-11th August 2006. There is one (traditional) Open Tournament, which is at the same time the Greek Championships. This year they decided to form two groups with very low elo players competing separately, so as not to create great elo differences and discourage high-ranked players from participating (and being paired with a 1400 player, when a game loss, or draw might mean an "elo catastrophy") on a swiss tournament such as this one. This separation of low elos and the bigger ones is done for the first time in Greece, previously all competed in one tournament. The 1st group players will be eligible for Greek Open titles in men's and women's competitions.

Entries must be sent by fax to + 30.2510.226871 or by e-mail : vliog@tee.gr, not later than July 24th and should include full name, ELO Rating, telephone and dates of arrival and departure. Telephone communication : Vassilis Liogkas : +30.2510.622370 and 6977474684

It is a scientific experiment and I will have to fight very hard for my chance." The WCC is being organized by Universal Event Promotion (UEP), in cooperation with the Art and Exhibition Hall.
