Einarsson, Carlos H. Taboada, and Claudio Tonegutti. I'm gradually crawling to the end of the term at the University here (I work in the Modern Languages Department.) also I played chess yesterday so its all got a bit tiring. There will be a review of the year when I hope to do quite a bit on the recent Campomanes/ FIDE stuff. I would have liked more time to edit various pieces in this issue, but I'm already way overdue and wish to finish now! Lots of exciting things, the games sections took a tremendous amount of work to get right. Hope you enjoy this issue. Mark 2) United States Chess Championships --------------------------------- The United States Chess Championships were won by Patrick Wolff after some rapidplay games. He tied with Nick De Firmian and Alexander Ivanov on 8.5 points. I have placed some markers in the games section for the final games that I don't currently have. I took the final round results from Ken Sloan's www page. My thanks to Tom Crain who has put in tremendous effort on ICC and elsewhere making the games available to us. If someone could explain why the draw is apparently non-standard I'd be greatful. (using ICC) He was outplayed for a while by UK Junior Luke McShane. He drew 3 games and won the rest. The format was a clock simultaneous with Kasparov starting with the white pieces. The Virtual Players had 45 minutes and Kasparov had 1 hour to play the ten games. That way the virtual players were responsible for their own time management. Kasparov was clearly notified on the screen of each PC when it is his turn to move. 5) Philidor Chess Club in Leiden - Piket vs Lautier events ------------------------------------------------------- There were a variety of events played in Leiden (the Netherlands) to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the death of Francois Andre Danican Philidor. The Centre of the activities over the 8th - 10th of December were Lautier and Piket who played a series of exhibition games at different timerates. My thanks to Jeroen van de Weijer (secretary of chess club Philidor in Leiden, The Netherlands) for his help in covering this event. Normal Timerate games. ---------------------- Piket,Je - Lautier,J 1-0 Lautier,J - Piket,Je 0-1 Rapid play ---------- 20 minutes and 10 seconds for every move, Fischer-clock Lautier,J - Piket,Je 0-1 Piket,Je - Lautier,J 1-0 Blitz Games ------------ 5 minutes and three seconds extra for every move Piket,Je - Lautier,J 0-1 Lautier,J - Piket,Je 1-0 6) THE 1995 PHILIPPINE FEBTC OPEN by Bobby Ang -------------------------------------------- The Philippine Open, sponsored for the 8th consecutive year by the Far East Bank and Trust Company (FEBTC), is actually some sort of a misnomer, as it is only partially an open tournament. Aside from Philippine titleholders and national masters, all of whom are automatically qualified, the rest of the local contingent must pass through a gruelling regional elimination series which lasts for one year. The result is that this tournament has become the premiere showcase of Philippine chess talent. This year six GMs came to play in this 11-round Swiss System Contest. These are Utut Adianto (top seed from Indonesia), Mikhail Krasenkov (2nd seed, formerly Soviet Union who now represents Poland), Joerg Hickl (3rd seed from Germany), Niaz Murshed (7th seed, Bangladesh) and the locals Eugene Torre (4th seed) and Rogelio Antonio, Jr. (5th seed). Torre did not disappoint the home crowd. Emerging from semi-retirement to play in his first competition after the Moscow Olympiad, he got off to a slow start by losing to Ibaryu Adante, a complete unknown, in the second round, and almost losing to Capt. Melandro Singson of the Philippine National Police in the 5th. After that he shook off his rustiness and reeled off six straight wins to capture the crown, in the process defeating GM Krasenkov and IM Rahman in the last two rounds. The top twenty (in order of tie-break points): Title Name FIDE PTS -------------------------------------------------------- 1 GM Torre, Eugene 2535 9.5 -------------------------------------------------------- 2 GM Hickl, Joerg 2570 9.0 3 GM Murshed, Niaz 2505 9.0 -------------------------------------------------------- 4 GM Krasenkov, Mikhail 2590 8.5 5 IM Barcenilla, Rogelio 2455 8.5 6 FM Chiong, Luis 2390 8.5 7 GM Antonio, Rogelio Jr. 2525 8.5 8 NM Toledo, Rodolfo 2270 8.5 -------------------------------------------------------- 9 IM Rahman, Ziar 2465 8.0 10 IM Mariano, Nelson 2510 8.0 11 Ortiz, Eduardo 8.0 12 Roullo, Rolzon 8.0 13 IM De Guzman, Ricardo 2400 8.0 14 IM Reefat, Bin-Satter 2435 8.0 15 NM Garma, Edgardo 2375 8.0 16 Nodado, Jerry 8.0 17 NM Zuniga, Dante 8.0 18 NM Gutierrez, Dennis 8.0 19 NM Fuentes, Mardonio 8.0 20 NM Filipinas, Ruel 8.0 ------------------------------------------------------- In case you are looking for the name of the top seed, GM Adianto lost to IM Reefat and was held to 5 draws to close out with 7.5 points in a tie for the 21st-37th places! SOME SIDELIGHTS The three untitled places Ortiz, Roullo and Nodado will be awarded the National Master title for their strong performance here. Roland Perez, another untitled player who finished 23rd with 7.5 points was actually the revelation of the tournament. He was in the leading group for many rounds and only needed half-a-point in the last round for the NM title. He went for broke and actually achieved a winning position against NM Rodolfo Toledo, but had an attack of nerves and blundered away the win, and then the draw to finish outside of the money and lose his chance for the title. IM Buenaventura Villamayor was also at 7.5 points before the last round but got held up by a monstrous traffic jam and was defaulted against FM Luis Chiong. The following are some games from the tournament. We will send the rest as soon as we get our hands on them. 7) "Enghien les Bains" tournament by Jean-Pierre Mercier ----------------------------------------------------- Enghien les Bains (FRA), XI-XII 1995. cat. Not less then three in German- publishing publishers, two new (Kania and HE-chess) and one very renomated (Edition Olms) were so gracious to send books. Furthermore a lot of material about the WM-match (by Olms, Cadogan and Interchess). Did I have time to look into all this books very deeply? No unfortunately not as much I like to do but time cannot be bought so my hours now will be divided between chess and love. Three books are mentioned in this BOOKS, but will be discussed in the next BOOKS in two weeks. And there are as usual some recommendations: Opening Blackmar Diemer Gambit, Gary Lane, Batsford Endgame Praxis des Turmendspiels, Victor Kortschnoi, Edition Olms Special Top Helpmates, H.Ebert&H.Gruber, HE-Chess 1 Edition Olms is a well known and venorated Swiss publisher which specialised in reprinting famous chessbooks from the last 100 years. This Tschaturanga-serie includes all the great chessbooks by Tartakower, Tarrasch, Reti, Steinitz, tournament books like Wien 1908, Karlsbad 1929, Zurich 1934 etc. ca.130 titles in all. Selection of titles, the search for original manuscripts etc. is in the hands of eminent chess historians Christian M.Bijl and Klaus Lindorfer, assisted by Viktor Kortschnoi. The last years Kortschnoi also participating in the series PraxisSchach, a serie of educational chessbooks for all player types, from novice to grandmaster. Together with Rudolf Teschner and Helmut Pleger 22 books were published in this series. Praxis des Turmendspiels, Victor Kortschnoi, Edition Olms 1995,103 p. (ISBN 3-283-00287- 8) Price : DM 24,80 Part 19 of PraxisSchach is an endgame book of great depth and beauty. From his decades of experience Kortschnoi has selected 14 Rook versus Rook endings. After a little theory on the basic positions on this theme, divided in 6 chapters all themes are presented in practice. The analyses are concentrated on this endgame theme. I have added the games which are presented in the book to this WIC-issue to give you a change to play the games through. The analyses by Kortschnoi are superb. The highlight is his analyses on the famous 31 Bagio matchgame against Karpow which covers 22 pages of inside information on his years of search to all the question this endgame can ask by this professional. In the Tschaturanga-series I came across a book I hoped to find when I asked my readers about material on O.S.Bernstein (thanks for the reactions): Moderne Schachstrategie (D.I.Ossip S.Bernsteins Schach und Lebenlaufbahn), S.G.Tartakower, Edition Olms 1985, 139 p. (ISBN 3-283-00177-4) Price: DM 34,80 50 beautiful games are presented and analysed by a player who according to Tartakower was an exponent of the new way chess should be played in the beginning of this century. After the era of Lasker, Pillsbury etc., with the win of Barmen 1905 the young Bernstein played the game like it wasn't played before. The victims in this tournament like Tschigorin, Burn and Janowski were victims of a new modern chessstategy. Shortly after this and some other tournamentvictories Bernstein in 1907 choose for a social carreer as layer. Sometimes the chess came up like in 1914 when he participated in St.Petersburg. Players like Capablanca and Aljechin where busy preparing to take over the chess throne The book covers the period 1905 - 1930 . After this it could have been concluded that Bernsteins chess was over. But it wasn't. The old man played in Bern 1932, Zurich 1934, Groningen 1946 and as was mentioned in an earlier WIC BOOKS won a beauty price against Najdorf at the 1954 Olympiad in Amsterdam. Great human story and beautiful chess. The match Kasparow - Anand has drawn a lot of attention. After the book by Keene (Batsford, see WIC 55), two books and New in Chess-magazin have arrived. The goal for a publisher is to reach as many public as possible. The main part of these books are the story on the match, the first part, the win in game 9 by Anand and then the collapse. The goal for a magazinpublisher is to give very interesting and deep analyses. The issue 1995/7 of New in Chess gives analyses by Anand and Kasparow. The interesting part of the Swiss book (and a pity for the non-German readers) is the analyses by several Anand-team members: Yusupow, Ubilawa and Gurewitsch. And I like the story in the King book very much. But there the analyses are somehow thin. Kasparov vs Anand, Daniel King, Cadogan 1995, 128 p. (ISBN 1-85744-146-X) Price: $12.95 Schach-WM 1995 Kasparow - Anand, Helmut Pleger & Andre Behr, Edition Olms 1995, 135 (124), (ISBN 3-283-00295-9) Price : DM 29,80 The analyses, articles and interviews where in most cases published in Zurcher Tages- Anzegerss. Besides the forementioned players analyses are given by Kortschnoi and I.Rogers. Interviews with the key figures like the players, the seconds etc. are printed between the games. The book ends with a story on the 13th Computer Chess WM (??). This book is also Part 22 in the PraxisSchach-serie. New in Chess-magazin, Interchess 1995, 90 p. Price: $10.75 DM 13.50 (one issue) Besides the story on the match and the exclusive analyses by the players, an In Memoriam from Genna Sosonko on Lev Polugaevsky draws attention. Correspondence Chess Yearbook 14, S1 Editrice 1995, 292 p. (ISBN 88-86127-37-5) Prijs: Lit 30.000 It took some time between part 13 and 14 but finally this gamess election with 358 more or less analysed games has arrived from Italy. Besides game there openings articles on the Winckelmann- Reimer, Russian and CaroKann with 2.Nc3 d5 3.Qf3), the B-letter in the Encyclopedia of Correspondence Chess Players and the ICCF-Eloratinglist complete this work. A must for all CC-players but a lot of games could have had more analyses then just some openings examples. Several games from this book are used with other bookreviews in this BOOKS... An opening repertoire for White, R.Keene & B.Jacobs, Batsford 1995, 144 p. (ISBN 0- 7134-7817-9) Price: 10.99 The autors present a complete repertoire using 1.d4 as openingmove. More on this book in the next BOOKS-issue. The Labourdonnais System in the Sicilian Defence (B32) , Adolf Neumann, S1 Editrice, 269 p. (ISBN 88-86127-41-3) Price : Lit.26.000 S1 Editrice has started for some years a serie opening monografies with an Informatorlike style. This part on the famous Labourdannais-variation in the Sicilian (1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cd4 4.Nd4 e5) gives all the details. I have had some experience with the so-called Pils variation (after an Austrian (?) chessplayer): 5.Nb5 a6 6.Nd6 Bd6 7.Qd6 b5 which was very popular in the late 70's and early 80's. Today especially the following line is popular :5.Nb5 d6 6.N1c3 a6 7.Na3 b5 (Be6 8.Nd5) 8.Nd5 is popular. After scanning through the CCY 14 I came across Kreideweiss - Neumann (yes, the autor himself) and found the following interesting (and amazing discoveries). (see games and additional games in the game-part.) In the book I found the judgement after 10.Bb5!? ab5 11.Nb5 +- In the game Meladze - Divakov, cr 1990 Neumann in CCY 14 gives the judgement -/+ after Blacks 27th move 27...Nf4. In the theory book he gives an equal (=) sign. In my view White is in great trouble because of his weekness on the d-line. The complete game Kreideweiss - Neumann is discussed in the theory book as Meladze - Poletajev, cr 1990, until the last 30th move!? Strangely in CCY14 Neumann doesn't mention the winning 29.Rd1! +-, which can be found in this theorybook. Strange. Who can we trust: the player Neumann or the autor Neumann?? But still, the line 4...e5 gives Black very interesting, promising but complicated play. Pirc Defence Czech Variation 3...c6 (B07), F.Pieri, S1 Editrice, 203 p. (ISBN 88-86127-38-3) Price: Lit.22.000 This book discusses a line where Black voluntary gives away the centre, but shortly after White ahs taken this space, counterattacks with moves like Qa5, e5 etc to bring the White centre- pawns out of balance. Tradition open positionplayers who like Italian and Spanish positions will have a hard time. The white mainlines are 4.a4 (to undermine the Black queenside possibilities) and 4.f4 (to take all the available space) Several other white possibilities are mentioned of which 4.f3!? look promissing. After 4.f4 Qa5 immediately questions White. His alternatives are 5.Bd2, e5 and Bd3. The positions are often very complicated where Black almost continually threatens to break the centre, on the other hand if Black acts to slow, he will be taken on the Kingside. An intreging openingsystem for Black. Blackmar Diemer Gambit, Gary Lane, Batsford 1995, 128 p. (ISBN -7034-7725-3) Price: 10.99 1.d4 d5 2.e4 de4 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.f3 is the start of an openingcomplex which initialy was introduced by A.Blackmar, and this century refined by E.J.Diemer who introduced the order 3.Nc3 and then 4.f3 (initialy 3.f3 was the move). The pawnsacrifice leads to very sharp and aggressive positions where Black must be always on garde. The compensation for the pawn comes in the half-open f-line, quick piece development and fast pawnmovement on the kingside. The names of the different defence strategies for Black: Euwe (5...e6, too soft), Bogoljubow (5...g6, Black can run into problems very quickly), Tartakower-Gunderam (5...Bf5, very aggressive) and the Teichmann (5...Bg4, the positional approach) hint at strong OTB-practice, but most interesting discoveries and practice come from CC-practice and theorist like Gunderam, Studier, Diemer etc. In 10 chapters, 35 completely analysed and representive games all ins and outs are presented. After this and the book on the Latvian, Batsford has two titles on distinguist gambits at his list. Maybe it's time for an OTB-revival? In the gameselction several interesting games by the German CC-player Schug are attached. A new German publisher, Schach Verlag Kania (Hofpfad 32, D-71701 Schwieberdingen, Duitsland) seems to focus on extraordinary openinglines. The first two books are concerned with a complete Black strategy (1...Nc6) and an ancient and long forgotten line against the Spanish. Besides books, Kania is also the new publisher where RandSpringer has found his home. This magazine now for 13 years discusses all the extravagant in openingtheory. 1...Sc6 ...aus allen Lagen, H.Keilhack&R.Schlenker, SchachVerlag Kania 1995, 191 p. (ISBN 3-931192-01-6) Price: DM 26,80 The mainpart is about 1.e4 Nc6, (to me known as the Nimzowitsch), and some pages on 1.d4 Nc6, 1.c4 Nc6 and 1.f4 Nc6. Although the move 1...Nc6 is given as an antidote to all first moves, against 1.d4 it is given an !?, against 1.c4 the autors know there are better moves and does White face any problem after 1.f4 Nc6 ?? Against 1.e4 interesting and active play will start, where White often lose the battle because of his underestimation of the Black resources. To convience yourself three recent games are attached to this Books. Die Alapin-Variante in der Spanischen Eroffnung, Berhard Lach, SchachVerlag Kania 1995, 62 p. (ISBN 3-931192-00-8) Prijs: DM 13.80 Finally something new (??) against the Spanish. A lot of players have switched from a6 to f5. Some extravagant like 3...a5 was tried, but here an old idea has been dug up, cleaned and refreshed. Alapins move was played as a provocation in the time where the Evansgambit had it's highlights. Black provoces and White can occupy the centre easy, but later on often is attacked in the centre with d5. I've added several games to the gamefile. The analyse by Lach are interesting, and rumour goes that the openinglibrary of new computerprograms can have the Alapin on it's repertoire. Be aware!! In the dark days before X-mas I like to have something to dive into. The following two books with studies, problems and combinations will give that possibility 100 Classics of the chessboard, A.Dickins & H.Ebert, Cadogan Books 1995, 217 p. (ISBN 1- 85744-187-7) Price : In 8 chapters the following themes are presented: Games, Combinations, Endgames and Studies, Two-move problems, Three-move Problems, Longer Problems, Selfmates and Helpmates and finally Curiosity Shop. Every position has a story, a game, an anecdote or an explanation on the type of problem the reader is facing. This book is a superb introduction to the mystic world of problems, composers etc. It's also a great addendum to Secrets of Spectacular Chess (Batsford 1995). This book is pure entertainment. Top Helpmates, H.Ebert&H.Gruber, HE-Chess 1 1995, 262 p. Prijs: DM 39,80 This beautiful designed and published privat publication not only expresses the autors love for chess, but also his love for the chessbook. Hilmert Ebert with this book starts a book series which promises a lot of interesting beauty. Titles which are announced are Wenigsteiner (endgame studies with not more then 4 pieces on the board) and Kegelschach (positions where the centre of the board are filled with pawns. It can be translated as bowlingchess). A Helpmate is a mate where one party is voluntary busy helping his opponent to mate him. This starts with the first move where the loser-to-be starts with the motto: Start and be mated. Besides 60 Helpmate-positions an extensive literature-list is presented.
