1) Introduction

My thanks to Brent Kitson, Andy McFarland, Peter Svidler, Rolf Behovits, Vasik Rajlich, dr. Bognár Csaba, Miklos Orso, Richard Palliser, Jeroen Noomen, V Saravanan, D.Barua, Javier Rodríguez, Leo Battesti, Valery Maes, Gérard Demuydt and everyone else who helped with the issue.

A quieter week with less chess than in recent issues. The star event is the Mikhail Tal Memorial in Moscow. Seven of the top 12 in the world are playing. The bottom rated player is wunderkind Magnus Carlsen playing in his super tournament. This is a definite step up in class from anything he's played in before and he was defeated in round one by Boris Gelfand. Should be interesting stuff.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Mikhail Tal Memorial

The Mikhail Tal Memorial takes place November 5th-19th 2006 (Starts on the 6th (opening on the 5th), 3-rest-3-rest-3)

Then there will be two days of blitz qualifiers followed by a 16-player blitz event - 10 from the main event (maybe not 10 in fact, as it clashes with the Bundesliga) plus some qualifiers. Prize fund - $100K for the round robin and $100K for the blitz.

3) 7th Cap d’Agde

The 7th Cap d’Agde tournament takes place 26th October - 2nd November 2006. The semi-finals saw youth take over with 20 year old Andrei Volokitin as the veteran, 19 year old Teimour Radjabov, 16 year old Sergey Karjakin and 15 year old Magnus Carlsen. The winner was Teimour Radjabov who defeated Volokitin in the semi-final and then won the second game of the final against Sergey Karjakin (who had eliminated Carlsen). This gave him revenge for a loss in the group phase of the event.

The time rates were: 25 minutes + 10 seconds a move and if needed blitz tie-break games at 3 mins + 2 seconds a move.

5) US Chess League

The 10th and final week of the US Chess League took place on 1st November 2006 on ICC.

The official site says: New York, Carolina and Dallas join Boston, San Francisco and Seattle in the playoffs. In what has to be the most unbelievable turn of events in USCL history, FM Matthew Hoekstra of the Carolina Cobras won a completely lost king and pawn endgame on time, thus vaulting the Carolina Cobras into the playoffs and left the Philadelphia Masterminds heartbroken and on the outside looking in. Philadelphia seemed like a sure lock to make it into the playoffs after tying New York 2-2, spearheaded by a smooth win by FM Bryan Smith over 2005 MVP, Pascal Charbonneau. Once Baltimore lost to Boston, the only thing the Masterminds needed was for Carolina to not defeat Tennessee 4-0, and that's what they ended up doing. Carolina will go up against New York in the first round, with New York receiving draw odds. To demonstrate how crazy this final week was, Baltimore came into the final week in 2nd place in the East. After the week was over, they were in 5th place. Things were a bit calmer in the West, as once Dallas drew with Seattle, things were settled and they had guaranteed themselves a playoff berth while leaving the Miami Sharks out in the cold. There were high hopes for Miami after last year's Championship appearance, but this year they just couldn't get things going on the lower boards. However there was a bright spot to Miami's season as GM Julio Becerra played fantastically all year and this week he defeated IM Vince McCambridge to win the 2006 USCL MVP award. Congratulations to Julio, who only lost out on the 2005 award by losing to the same McCambridge in the final week of the season!

Kramnik - Deep Fritz

Vladimir Kramnik will play the ChessBase computer program Deep Fritz in a 6 game match 25th November - 5th December 2006 in the German’s Art and Exhibition Hall in Bonne. Kramnik stands to win a prize of $1 Million US for a win in the match doubling his starting fee.

Asked how he estimates his chances, Kramnik reacted cautiously: "Fritz examines millions of moves per second. It is extraordinarily difficult to play against such a calculating monster. Right from the start you are walking on a very narrow ridge, and you know that any inattentiveness will be your downfall. It is a scientific experiment and I will have to fight very hard for my chance."

The WCC is being organized by Universal Event Promotion (UEP), in cooperation with the Art and Exhibition Hall.

Schedule: Game 1: Saturday 25.11.2006 16h Game 2: Monday 27.11.2006 16h Game 3: Wednesday 29.11.2006 16h Game 4: Friday 01.12.2006 16h Game 5: Sunday 03.12.2006 16h Game 6: Tuesday 05.12.2006 16h
