1) Introduction

My thanks to Jan Mazuch, Doru Ionescu, Thomas Henrich, Adolivio Capece, Sinisa Joksic, Roger Petrol, Antonio Rosino, Valery Maes, George Mirijanian, Torstein Bae, Philipp Schlosser, Jesús Mena, Miklos Orso, Rodolfo Arias, Pierre Barthélémy, Philip Feeley, Frits Agterdenbos, John Donaldson and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The Category XX Tal Memorial tournament produced some interesting chess but the final round finished with a whimper with five quick draws. Peter Leko, Ruslan Ponomariov and Levon Aronian all finished on 5.5/9 with Leko having the best tie-break. This was immediately followed by a fantastically strong blitz event. Sadly unlikely earlier in the year with the World Blitz Championships in Rishon-le-zion there was no live coverage nor electronic boards to cover the event so most of the games were lost (two per round were video taped). I find it a very strange world where huge libraries of photos were produced but little or no thought was given to actually covering the moves in spite of all the money spent on organising the event. Fortunately elsewhere there are plenty of games by strong players in the various team events covered this week and today should see the start of the annual Capablana Memorial in Cuba.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Mikhail Tal Memorial

The Mikhail Tal Memorial took place November 5th-19th 2006 (Starts on the 6th (opening on the 5th), 3-rest-3-rest-3). Peter Leko, Ruslan Ponomariov and Levon Aronian all finished on 5.5/9. Its reported to me that Leko took first on Sonnenborg-Berger tie-break but this isn't totally confirmed. A blitz tournament follows after a break of a day.

Blitz Tournament: Viswanathan Anand won with 23/34, Levon Aronian was 2nd with 21 points. Peter Svidler and Teimour Radjabov shared 3rd-4th places on 20.5. Two games per round were recorded using video cameras and should eventually become available.

3) XLI Capablanca Memorial

The XLI Capablanca Memorial had to move from its normal dates in May due to the Turin Olympiad. This years event takes place 19th-30th November 2006 in the hotel Habana Riviera. The top event is a 6 player double round robin with Vassily Ivanchuk, Evgeny Bareev, Kamil Miton, Jesus Nogueiras, Lenier Dominguez and Lazaro Bruzon (starts 21st). (Cuban article on the event).

4) Bundesliga

The Bundesliga chess season in Germany is under way. The second double round took place 18th-19th November 2006. The Tal Memorial Blitz caused a lot of strong players to miss the event. Alexei Shirov decided to miss the blitz and his 2/2 would have been much appreciated by his team OSC Baden Baden. Nevertheless they were missing Anand and they lost a key match to rivals SG Köln Porz. The first of the extra round 7 games were played on Friday so some teams have played 5 games and others 4 but all teams have dropped points now.

It is a scientific experiment and I will have to fight very hard for my chance."
