1) Introduction

My thanks to Varlam Vepkhvishvili, Ian Rogers, Jan Mazuch, Vasik Rajlich, Larry Kaufman, Peter Hum, Laszlo Nagy, Thomas Henrich, Valery Maes, Manuel Rodríguez, Adolivio Capece, Stefan Loeffler, Dave Clayton, Gaguik Oganessian, Neil Benn, Pablo Sierra, Miklos Orso, Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam, Evgeny Tkachev, Torstein Bae and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The finish of Linares always heralds the start of the Amber tournament. In some ways its a shame that its so close but it does guarantee a long period of interesting chess at the start of the year. Nor is it the only event of interest, with the 8th Poikovsky Karpov tournament and a Ruy Lopez event with Ponomariov and Sasikiran.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

7) Norwegian League

The last three rounds of the Norwegian League took place 9th-11th March 2007 in Oslo. Oslo Schakselskap won, ahead of Bergen and Moss. Trondheim and Randaberg were relegated.

Final standings:

Bergens 9 5 2 2 30 12

Trondheim 9 2 1 6 22,5 5
Randaberg 9 2 1 6 19 5

There was huge controversy (I have an English translation the original is here:) http://olevalaker.nettblogg.no/1173730935_flau_finale.html. Basically in the final round Moss' team captain offered draws on all six boards - simultaneously! OSS accepted, they won the league and Leif Øgaard finally became a Grandmaster. Moss finished in third place.

This kind of stuff has been seen as standard in Olympiads but always leaves a nasty taste in the mouth. It is game fixing, but its always been allowed by FIDE. Apparently it was a protest by Moss over a decision in the second round. These team events can cause high feelings. In my local Yorkshire league the champions for many years withdrew from the league altogether after disagreeing with a decision of the league.
